18 1 Loading the batteries Getti ng starte d • Ma nganese (zinc-carbon) batteries cannot be used. • If t he battery power runs out whi le the camera i s connected to a PC, t he image data may be lost or damaged. You are recommended to use the AC adapter wh en transferri ng images t o a PC.
19 1 Getti ng starte d Inserting a card "Card" in thi s manual refer s to the xD-Picture Car d. The camera uses the card to record pictures. Card basics The card corresponds to norma l camera film for recording t he pictures you have taken.
20 1 Inserting a card Getti ng starte d 1 Make sure that: 2 Open the card cover. 3 Face the card the correct way and insert it into t he card slot as shown in the illustration . • Insert the card keepi ng it straight. • The card stops with a click when it is inserted al l the way.

23 Power on/off 1 Getti ng starte d TIPS • To save battery power, the camera auto matically ent ers the sleep mode and stops operating if not used for 3 min utes. If the monitor is on, it will automatically turn off . The lens retracts automaticall y 5 minutes after that.
24 1 Power on/off Getti ng starte d TIPS • When t he camera turns on, the monitor may li ght up moment arily and a picture may be displayed briefly. This is not a malfunction. • Never open the card cover, remove the card or the batt eries, or connect or disconnect the AC ada pter while t he camera is tu rned on.
25 Power on/off 1 Getti ng starte d If the card is not recognized (card check) When the power is turned on, the camera checks th e card automat ically. If there is no card in the camera or a card that is not suppo rted by this camer a is inserted, one of the foll owing screens will be displayed.

You can select the appr opriate mode from t he SCENE SELECT (PROGRAM AUTO/ / / / ) depending on the shoot ing conditi ons and the effect you want to achieve when you take still pictures.

42 3 Shooting mode Shooting ba sics (Night scene) Suitable for sh ooting pictur es in the evening or a t night. The camera sets a slower shutter speed than is used in norma l shooting. If you take a pictur e of a street at night in any other mode, the lack of brightness will result in a dark pict ure with only dots of light showing.
43 3 Shooting ba sics T aking still pictures You can take still pictures using eit her the viewfinder or the monitor. Both methods are easy as all you have to do is to press the shutter butto n. If the camera is in the movie recor d mode, pre ss , and from the top menu, select (Still picture ).

50 3 If correct focus cannot be obtained Shooting ba sics Subjects that are difficult to focus on Under certain types of conditions, the auto focus may not work prop erly. If this happens, focus on an object with high contrast at t he same distance as the intended su bject (focus lock), recompose your shot and then take the picture .
51 3 Shooting ba sics Night scene mode Setting the mode to Night scene allows you to take landscape shots at night under optimum co ndition s. In this mode , the shutte r speed is not fixed to 1/30 second maximum when t he flash is activat ed. Depending upo n the subject or shooting condit ions, sh utter speed may extend up to 2 seco nds.

55 3 Shooting ba sics Zoom Telephoto and wi de-angle shooting are possible at 3x magnifica tion (the optical zoom limit, equivalent to 35 mm – 105 mm on a 35 mm camera). By combining the op tical zoom with the digita l zoom, zoom magnification can be increased to a maximum of approximat ely 12x .
