8 Introduction —Continued Supported Discs The D V -SP303/DV -SP303E supports the following discs. • Some audio CDs feature copy protection that doesn’ t conform to the official CD standard. Since these are nonstandard discs, they may not play properly in the DV -SP303/DV -SP303E.
9 Introduction —Continued About WMA WMA is an acronym for W indo ws Media Audio and refers to an audio compression technology dev eloped by Microsoft Corporation. WMA content can be encoded by using W indows Media ® Player version 7, 7.1, W in- dows Media ® Player for W indows ® XP , or W indo ws Media ® Player 9 Series.
10 Introduction —Continued Handling Discs •N ev er touch the underside of a disc. Alw ays hold discs by the edge, as shown. •N ev er attach adhesiv e tape or sticky labels to discs. Cleaning Discs •F or best results, keep your discs clean. Fingerprints and dust can affect the sound and picture quality and should be remov ed as follows.
11 Bef ore Using the D V -SP303/D V -SP303E Notes: • The supplied batteries should last for about six months, although this will vary with usage. • If the remote controller doesn’t w ork reliably , try replacing both batteries. • Don’t mix ne w and old batteries, or dif ferent types of batteries.

18 Connecting the D V -SP303/D V -SP303E —Continued The setup described here is a basic setup that allows you to play discs using just the cables supplied with the player . In this setup, stereo audio is played through the speakers in your TV . • This player is equipped with copy protection technol- ogy .
19 Connecting the D V -SP303/D V -SP303E —Continued Switching the video output to interlace using the front panel contr ols Switch the player to standby then, using the front panel controls, press ST ANDBY/ON while pressing to switch the player back to Interlace.
20 Connecting the D V -SP303/D V -SP303E —Continued • Connect the D VD Player to the TV directly . If you connect the D VD Player to a VCR, TV/VCR combina- tion, or video selector , the playback picture may be distorted as D VD videos are copy protected.
21 Connecting the D V -SP303/D V -SP303E —Continued Although you can reproduce the D VD Player’ s sound from the TV speak ers with the connections on page 18, connecting with an amplifier provides you high quality dynamic sounds.
22 Connecting the P ower/T urning on the D V -SP303/ DV -SP303E Befor e connecting • Make sure that all the connections on pages 17 – 21 are complete (the connection to a TV is required). Note: • This player features a screen sav er and an auto power off function.
23 Getting Star ted F or ease of use, this player makes e xtensiv e use of graph- ical on-screen displays (OSDs). All the screens are navigated in basically the same w ay , using the cursor buttons (///) t o change the highlighted item and pressing ENTER to select it.
24 Getting Started —Continued This sets the language of this system’ s on-screen dis- plays. The basic playback controls for playing D VD, CD, V ideo CD, DivX V ideo and MP3/WMA discs are cov- ered here. Further functions are detailed in the next chap- ter .
25 Getting Started —Continued Notes: •Y ou may find with some D VD discs that some play- back controls don’t w ork in certain parts of the disc.
26 Getting Started —Continued When you stop playback of a disc, RESUME is shown in the display indicating that you can resume playback again from that point. If the disc tray is not opened, the next time you start play- back the display shows RESUME and playback resumes from the resume point.
27 Getting Started —Continued Some V ideo CD have menus from which you can choose what you want to watch. These are called PBC (Playback control) menus. Y ou can play a PBC V ideo CD without ha ving to navi- g ate the PBC menu by starting playback using a number button to select a track, rather than the (play) button.
28 Pla ying discs Notes: • Many of the functions co vered in this chapter apply to D VD discs, V ideo CDs, CDs, DivX V ideo and MP3/ JPEG discs, although the exact operation of some v ar- ies slightly with the kind of disc loaded. • Some D VDs restrict the use of some functions (ran- dom or repeat, for example) in some or all parts of the disc.
29 Playing discs —Continued Y ou can advance or back up D VD discs frame-by-frame. W ith V ideo CD and DivX V ideo you can only use frame advance. Note: • Backward frame-by-frame playback does not w ork with V ideo CD.
30 Playing discs —Continued Use the Disc Navigator to bro wse through the contents of a D VD or V ideo CD disc to find the part you want to play . Important: •Y ou can’t use the Disc Na vigator with V ideo CD in PBC mode. Tip: • Another way to find a particular place on a disc is to use one of the search modes.
31 Playing discs —Continued Use the Disc Navigator to find a particular file or folder by filename. Tip: •T o play the contents of the whole disc rather than just the current folder , exit the Disc Na vigator and start playback using the (play) button.
32 Playing discs —Continued The A-B Repeat function allo ws you to specify two points (A and B) within a track (CD, V ideo CD) or title (D VD) that form a loop which is played ov er and over . •Y ou can’t use A-B Repeat with V ideo CD in PBC mode, or WMA /MP3/DivX V ideo files.
33 Playing discs —Continued Use the random play function to play titles or chapters (D VD-V ideo) or tracks (CD, V ideo CD) at random. (Note that the same track/title/chapter may play more than once.) Y ou can set the random play option when a disc is play- ing or stopped.
34 Playing discs —Continued This feature lets you program the play order of titles/ chapters/tracks on a disc. Important: •Y ou can’t use Program play with VR format DVD-R W discs, V ideo CD playing in PBC mode, WMA/MP3 discs, or while a D VD disc menu is being displayed.
35 Playing discs —Continued There are a number of other options in the program menu in addition to Create/Edit. • Playback Start – Starts playback of a sav ed program list • Playback Stop – .
36 Playing discs —Continued Some D VD or DivX V ideo discs ha ve subtitles in one or more languages; the disc box will usually tell you which subtitle languages are av ailable. Y ou can switch subtitle language during playback. • See Displaying DivX subtitle files on page 9 for more on DivX subtitle.
37 Playing discs —Continued Using the zoom feature you can magnify a part of the screen by a factor of 2 or 4, while watching a D VD, DivX V ideo title or V ideo CD, or playing a JPEG disc. Note: • If you are displaying subtitles, these will disappear when the screen is zoomed.
38 A udio Settings and Video Adjust menus The Audio Settings menu of fers features for adjusting the way discs sound. • Settings: High, Medium, Lo w , Off (default) The Dialog feature is designed to make the dialog stand out from other background sounds in the soundtrack.
39 A udio Settings and Video Adjust menus —Continued From the V ideo Adjust screen you can adjust v arious set- tings that affect ho w the picture is presented. Notes: • Depending on your TV , the picture may appear dis- torted if the brightness is set too high.
40 Initial Settings menu The Initial Settings menu provides audio and video out- put settings, parental lock settings, and display settings, among others. If an option is grayed out it means that it cannot be changed at the current time. This is usually because a disc is playing.

Dolby Digital Out Dolby Digital Dolby Digital encoded digital audio is output when pla ying a Dolby Digital D VD disc.
42 Initial Settings menu —Contin ued Language settings Setting Option What it means Audio Langua ge *1 *1 This setting is your preferred audio language for DVD discs. You can switch between the languages recorded on a DVD disc during playback using the AUDIO button.

46 Additional inf ormation D VD-V ideo discs come in several dif ferent screen aspect ratios, ranging from TV programs, which are generally 4:3, to Cinema- Scope widescreen movies, with an aspect ratio of up to about 7:3. T elevisions, too, come in dif ferent aspect ratios; “stan- dard” 4:3 and widescreen 16:9.
47 Additional inf ormation —Continued The default setting of this player is “ A UTO”, and unless you notice that the picture is distorted when playing some discs, you should leav e it set to “ A UTO”. If you e xperience picture distortion with some discs, set the TV system to match your country or region’ s system.

52 Tr oubleshooting —Continued D VD Player No sound? The 96 kHz PCM Out setting is set to “96 kHz. ” Change the 96 kHz PCM Out setting to “96 kHz > 48 kHz, ” or use analog connections (page 41). The Digital Out setting is set to “Off. ” Change the Digital Out setting to “On” (page 41).
53 Tr oubleshooting —Continued The D V -SP303/DV -SP303E contains a microcomputer for signal processing and control functions. In very rare situa- tions, sev ere interference, noise from an external source, or static electricity may cause it to lockup.
