12 En About Home Theater Thanks to the A V controller’ s superb capabilities, you can enjoy surround sound wi th a real sense of mo vement in your ow n home—just like being in a movie theater or co ncert hall. W ith Blu-ra y Discs or DVDs, you can enjo y DTS and Dolby Digital.
13 En Connections Connecting the A V Contr oller The A V controller is desi gned to be used with a separate multichannel po wer amplifier . Y ou connect the A V controller’ s PRE OUT jacks to the amplif ier’ s inputs, and c onnect your speakers to the amplifier’ s speakers terminals.
14 En Note *1 Specify crossov er frequency for the channel that you want to output in “Speaker Configuration” ( ➔ 48 ). *2 If you use the front high and wide speakers at the same time, you need to set the “ Front High + Front W ide ” setting to “ Ye s ” ( ➔ 48 ).
15 En Using Dipole Spea kers Y ou can use dipole speakers for the surround and surround back speakers. Dipole speakers output the same sound in tw o directions. Dipole speakers typically ha ve an arro w printed on them to indicate how the y should be positioned.
16 En Bi-amping the Fr ont Speaker s The FRONT L/R and SURR BA CK L/R outputs can be used with front speake rs and surround back speakers, respec- ti vely , or bi-amped to provide separate tweeter and w oofer fe eds f or a pair of front speakers that support b i-amping, pro- viding improve d bass and treble performance.
17 En Connecting a Balanced A udio Source Y ou can connect a balanced audio source to the A V controller’ s B ALANCE L/R INPUT jacks by using two XLR audio cables.
18 En Connected image with A V components • Before making any A V connections, read the manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve co mpleted and double-checke d all A V connections. • Push plugs in all the way to ma k e good connections (loo se connections can cause noise or malfunc- tions).
19 En Note • The A V controller does not support SCAR T plugs. • The A V controller ’ s optical digital jacks have shutter -type covers that open when an optical plug is inserted and close when i t’ s removed. Push plugs in all the way . Cautio n • T o prev ent shutter damage, hol d the optical plug straight when inserting and removing.
20 En Connect your components to the appropr iate jack s. The default input assi gnments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 46 , 47 ).
21 En Note *1 Connect a turntable (MM) that has built-in a phono preamp to TV/CD IN or connect it to PHONO IN with the phono preamp turned of f. If your turntable ( MM) doesn’t ha ve a phono preamp, co nnect to PHONO IN .
22 En This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The A V controller won’t pick up any ra dio signals without any an tenna connected, so you must connect the antenn a to use the tuner .
23 En The A V controller supports seve ral connection formats for comp atibility with a wide range of A V equipment. The format you choose will depend on the fo rmats supported by your components.
24 En ■ “Monitor Out” settin g set to “Analog” V ideo input signals flo w th rough the A V controller as show n, with composite video, S-V ideo and PC IN (Analog RGB) sources being upcon vert ed for the component video output. Use this setting if you connect the A V control- ler’ s COMPONENT VIDEO MONITOR OUT to y our TV .
25 En T ur ning On & Basic Operations T urning On/Off the A V Contr oller (European and Asian models) T o completely shut down the A V controller, set PO WER to the OFF position ( ). Tu r n i n g O n 1 (European and Asian models) Set PO WER to the ON position ( ) on the fr ont panel.
26 En Basic Operations Y ou can determine the langua ge used for the onscreen setup menus. See “Language ” in the “OSD Setup” ( ➔ 59 ). ■ Operating on the A V controller ■ Operating with the remote contr oller Y ou can display various info rmation about the current input source as follows.
27 En Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V controller. Tip • T o unmute, press MUTING again or adjust the volume. • The Mute function is cancelled when the A V controller is set to Standby . W ith the sleep timer , you can se t the A V controller to turn off au tomatically after a specified period.
28 En When you connect an u -capable Onkyo component, you must configure the input display so that u can w ork properly . This setting can be done only from the front panel. Note • DOCK can be selected for the TA P E , GAME or VCR/D VR input selector , but not at the same time.
29 En T urning Off the Components *2 When the last-pressed A CTIVITIES is MY MUSIC , the TV will not turn off. Changing the Pla yback Components Assigned to A CTIVITIES Y ou can change the playback components assigned to the A CTIVITIES of Easy Macro mode using the following procedure.
30 En Note • Make the room as quiet as possible. B ackground noise and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) can disrupt the room measure- ments. Close windows, tele visions, radios, air conditioners, flu- orescent lights, ho me applianc es, light dimmers, or other devices.
31 En Note • When Audyssey MultEQ ® XT32 Room Correction and Speaker Setup is complete, the “ Equalizer ” will be set to “ A udyssey ” ( ➔ 50 ).
32 En Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vo rite stations as presets for quick selection. Y ou can change the frequency st eps ( ➔ 60 ). Listening to the Radio T uning into Radio Stations ■ A u to tuning mode When tuned into a station, the TUNED indicator lights.
33 En Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fav orite FM/AM radio stations as presets. Note • Y ou can name your radio presets for easy identification ( ➔ 55 ).
34 En Finding Stations by T ype (PTY) Y ou can search for radio stations by type. Listening to T raffic Ne ws (TP) Y ou can search for stations that broadcast traf fic news. ■ RDS program types (PTY) 1 Press R T/PTY/TP twice. The current program type appears on the display .
35 En Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the selected input source to a component with recording capa bility , and how to record audio and video from different sources. Connecting a Recor ding Component Note • The A V controller must be tu rned on for record ing.

42 En Onky o-Original DSP Listening Modes Note *1 If you turn Zone 2 on during the Pure Audio listeni ng mode, the previous listening mode will be selected. *2 Based on the audio channels contained in the source, the corresponding speake rs will output the sound.
43 En Advanced Operations Adv anced Setup The on-screen setup menus a ppear on the connected TV and provide a con venient way to change the A V control- ler’ s various settings. Settings are or ganized into 9 catego- ries on the main menu . Carry out the settings by using the on-screen display .
44 En Explanatory No tes Main Menu Input/Out put Assign Monitor Out On the “ Monitor Out ” settings, you can select whether or not to hav e the video sources’ images output through the HDMI output, as well as whether to have the onscreen setup menu output through the HDMI output or through an analog output.
45 En ■ Resolution Y ou can specify the output resolution for the HDMI output and COMPONENT VIDEO MONITOR OUT and ha ve the A V controller upcon vert th e picture resolution as nec- essary to match the resolution supported by your TV .
46 En Note • For composite video , S-V ideo, and component video upcon ver- sion for the HDMI output, the “ Monitor Out ” setting must be set to other than “ Analog ” ( ➔ 44 ), and the “ HDMI Input ” set- ting must be set to “ ----- ”.
47 En Digital A udio Input If you connect a component to a digital audio input, you must assign that input to an i nput selector . For e xample, if you connect your CD player to the OPTICAL IN 1 , you must assign “ OPT 1 ” to the “ TV/CD ” input selector .
48 En Main menu Speaker Setup Here you can check the settings made by Audyssey MultEQ XT32 Room Correction and Speaker Setup, or set them manually , which is useful if you change one of the connected speakers after using Audyssey MultEQ XT32 Room Correction and Speaker Setup.
49 En Note *1 “ Full Band ” can be selected only when “ Full Band ” is selected in the “ Front ” setting. *2 If the “ Surround ” setting is set to “ Non e ”, this setting cannot be selected. *3 If the “ Surround ” setting is set to anything other than “ Full Band ”, “ Full Band ” cannot be selected here.
50 En Equalizer Settings W ith the Equalizer settings, you can adjust the tone of speakers indi vidually with a 7-band equalizer . The volume of each speaker can be set ( ➔ 49 ). ■ Equalizer ` Manual : Y ou ca n adjust the equa lizer for each speaker manu- ally .
51 En ■ Preserve THX Settings ` Ye s : Audyssey Dy namic EQ ® / Audyssey Dy namic V olume ® / Dolby V olume will not be activ e in THX listening mode. ` No : Audyssey Dynamic EQ / Audyssey Dynamic V olume / Dolby V olume will be acti ve in T HX listening mode depending on the set- ting.
52 En ■ PLIIz Height Gain The Height Gain Control in Dolby Pro Logic IIz enables the listener to se lect ho w much gain is applied to the front high speakers. There are three settings, “ Low ”, “ Mid ” and “ High ”, and the front high speakers are accentua ted in th at order .
53 En A udyssey DSX™ ■ Soundstage ` –3dB to Referen ce to +3dB W ith this setting, you can adjust the soundstage when using Audyssey DSX™. Note •I f t h e “ Cente r ” setting is set to “ None ”, or both “ Front High ” and “ Front W i de ” settings are set to “ None ” ( ➔ 48 ), this setting cannot be selected.
54 En ■ Reference Level A udyssey D ynamic EQ ® Reference Le vel Offset ` 0dB : It should be used when listening to movies. ` 5dB : Select this setting for cont ent that has a v ery wide dynamic range, such as classica l music. ` 10dB : Select this setting for jazz or other music that has a wider dynamic range.
55 En IntelliV olume ■ IntelliV olume ` –12dB to 0dB to +12dB in 1 dB steps. W ith IntelliV olume, you can set the input le vel for each input selector individually . This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others.
56 En Picture Adjust Using “ Picture Adjust ”, you can adjust the picture qual- ity and reduce any noise appearing on the screen. T o view the TV picture while setting, press ENTER . T o return to the pre vious screen, press RETURN . ■ Game Mode ` Off : Game Mode off.
57 En ■ Mosquito NR *2*3*4* 6 ` Off : Mosquito noise reduction off. ` Low : Low mosquito noise r eduction. ` Mid : Medium mosquito noise reduction. ` High : High mosquito noise reduction. W ith Mosquito Noise Reduc tion, you can remove the shimmering or haziness th at sometimes appears around objects in the picture.
58 En ■ Blue Contrast *2*4 ` –50 to 0 to +50 W ith this setting you can adjust blue contrast. “ –50 ” is the le ast. “ +50 ” is the greatest. Tip *1 This procedure can also be perf ormed on the remote controller by using the Home menu ( ➔ 27 ).
59 En Main menu Miscellaneous Vo l u m e S e t u p ■ V olume Displa y ` Absolute : Display range is “ Min ”, “ 0.5 ” throug h “ 99.5 ”, “ Max ”. ` Relative(THX) : Display range is “ – Q dB ”, “ –81.5dB ” through “ +18.0dB ”.
60 En Main menu Har dware S etup Remote ID ■ Remote ID ` 1 , 2 , or 3 When sev eral Onkyo components are used in the same room, their remote ID codes may o verlap. T o differenti- ate the A V controller from the other components, you can change its remote ID from “ 1 ”, to “ 2 ” or “ 3 ”.
61 En ■ HDMI Control(RIHD) ` Off : p disabled. ` On : p enabled. This function allows p -compatible componen ts connected via HDMI to be cont rolled with the A V control- ler ( ➔ 102 to 103 ).
62 En A uto P ower Do wn ■ A uto P ower Down ` Off : Auto Power Down disabled. ` On : Auto Power Down enabled. When “ A u to Po wer Down ” is set to “ On ”, A V controller will automatical ly perform ST ANDBY operation if there is no operation for 30 minutes with no audio and no video signal input.
63 En Speaker Levels Y ou can adjust the volume of each speak er while listening to an input source. These temporary adj ustments are cancelled when the A V controller is set to Standby . T o sav e the setting you made here, go to “Le vel Calibration” ( ➔ 49 ) before setting the A V controller to Standby .
64 En Re-EQ W ith the Re-EQ function, you can compensate a soundtrack whose high-frequenc y content is too harsh, making it more suitable for home theater viewing.
65 En NET/USB The A V controller is network-r eady , which means you can hook it up to your home network with a standard Ethernet cable and enjoy the music fi les stored on your computer or media server . If your network is connected to the Internet, you can also enjoy Internet radio.
66 En T o receiv e Internet radio, you must connect the A V con- troller to a netw ork with Internet access ( ➔ 65 ). Y ou can select Internet rad io stations by connecting to the A V controller from your computer and selecting stations in your W eb browser .
67 En Registering Pre sets *1 Once you’ ve added a station to the list, simply select it on the Internet Radio screen, and then press ENTER to start playback. *1 From the search results you can pres et the stations and songs but cannot listen to them directly .
68 En Random Playback The Random function can only be set while the PLA Y screen is displayed. T o play songs in random order , during playback (or while playback is paused or stopped), press RANDOM . All of the songs in the current folder will be played in random order .
69 En Supported Audio File Fo rmats For serv er playback, the A V controller supports the fol- lowing music file formats: MP3, WMA, W A V , FLA C, Ogg V orbis, AA C and LPCM. Not all servers support all for- mats. ■ MP3 • MP3 files must be MPEG-1/MPEG-2 Audio Layer 3 for- mat with a sampling rate of 8 kHz, 11.
70 En Server Requirements The A V controller can play di gital music files stored on a computer or media server and supports the followin g tech- nologies: • W indows Media Player 11 • W indows Media Connect 2.
71 En Using Remote Playbac k Note • When modifying network settings, after modifying it is neces- sary to execute “ Sa ve ”. This section explains ho w to configure the A V controller’ s network settings manually .
72 En Note • This procedure can als o be perfor med on the A V controller by using SETUP , arrows, and ENTER . ■ MA C Address This is the A V controller’ s MA C (Media Access Contro l) address.
73 En USB can be used to play mu sic f iles stored on USB mass storage de vices (e.g., USB flash drives and MP3 players), which can be plugged into the A V controller’ s USB port. Supported Audio File Fo rmats For USB mass storage de vice playba ck, the A V controller supports music file formats.
74 En Random Playback The Random function can only be set while the PLA Y screen is displayed. T o play songs in random order , while the list of songs is displayed, press RANDOM . All of the songs in the cur- rent folder will be played in random order .
75 En Multi Zone In addition to your main listeni ng room, you can also enjoy playback in the ot her room, or as we ca ll Multi Zone. And, you can select a dif ferent source for each room.
76 En Zone 3 speakers must be connected to an amp in Zone 3. Connecting Y our Zone 3 Speaker s Y ou can enjoy 2-channel stereo playback in Zone 3 and a different source to those selected for your main room and Zone 2. Note • With the def ault settings, the Zone 3 volume must be set on the Zone 3 amp.
77 En ■ Zone 2 P ower On V olume, Zone 3 P ower On V olume ` Last , Min , 1 to 99 or Max (Absolute display) ` Last , – Q dB , –81dB to +18dB (Relati ve display) This setting determ ines what the volum e will be for Zone 2/3 each time the A V controller is turned on.
78 En Contro lling Zone 2/3 with the Remote Contro ller Note • T o control Zone 2/3, you must press the remote controller’ s ZONE firs t. • ZONE turns red while Zone 2 is on, and green while Zone 3 is on. Note • Only analog input sources are output by the ZONE 2/3 PRE OUT jacks.
79 En The 12V triggers A, B, and C can be used to turn on 12V trigger-capable components au tomatically when the y are selected as the input source. Th e triggers can be set so that they acti vate when a connected component is selected as the input source for the main room, Zone 2, Zone 3 or any combination of rooms.
80 En T o control the A V controller with the remote controller while you’ re in Zone 2 or Zone 3, you’ll need a commer- cially a v ailable multiroom re mote control kit fo r each zone.
81 En Controlling iP od & Other Compo nents Contr olling iP od USB can be used to play music f iles stored on iPod/ iPhone, which can be plugged into the A V controller’ s USB port. Note • Note that the rear-panel USB po rt does not support iPod/iPhone connection.
82 En *2 The following iPod mode ls ar e not supported in Standard Mode. These iPod models can on ly be controlled in Extended Mode. *3 When you disconnect the iPod/iPhone, the A V controller stores the mode.
83 En UP-A1 Dock W ith the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the music, photo, or movie stored on your Apple iPod th rough the A V controller and enjoy great sound.
84 En RI Dock W ith the RI Dock, you can easily play the music stored on your Apple iPod through the A V controller and enjoy great sound, and watch iPod slidesho ws and videos on your TV .
85 En ✔ : A vailable b uttons • With some iPod models, generations and RI Docks, certain buttons may not work as expected. • For detailed operation of the iPod, please r e fer to the instruction ma nual of RI Dock. *1 This button do es not turn the Onkyo DS-A2 or DS-A2X RI Dock on or off.
86 En Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V contro ller’ s remote controller (RC-773M) to control your other A V components, includ- ing those made by other ma nufacturers. This section explains ho w to enter the re mote control code (with the default underlined) for a component that you want to con- trol: D VD, TV , CD, etc.
87 En Tip • If you cannot access the data base, a message “ C annot connect to database. ” will appear. Press ENTER to return to the previous step. • If the brand name is not found, use r to s elect “ Not Listed ”, and then press EN TER . The following screen appears.
88 En Y ou’ll need to enter a code for each component that you want to control. Note • The remote control codes provid ed are correct at the time of printing, but are su bject to change. Onkyo components that are connected via u are co n- trolled by pointing the remote con troller at the A V control- ler, not the component.
89 En Y ou can reset a REMOTE MODE to its default remote control code. Y ou can reset the remote controller to its def ault settings. By pressing REMO TE MODE that’ s been programmed with the remote control code for your component, you can control your component as below .
90 En Note • With some components, certai n button s may not work as expected, and some may not work at all. ✔ : A vailable b uttons *1 The p func tion is not supported. The p sup- ported by the A V controller is the CEC system control func- tion of the HDMI standard.
91 En V ia onscreen menu, you can spec ify what actions will be taken b y the Easy macro command in the Easy macro mode ( ➔ 28 ). Here ar e the default settings. Activities Setup 1 Pre ss RECEIVER f ollowed by SETUP . The main menu appears onscreen.
92 En The A V controller’ s remote controller can learn the com- mands of other remote contro llers. By transmit ting, for example, the Play command from you r CD player’ s remote controller , the remote co ntroller can learn it, and then transmit the exact same co mmand when its 1 is pressed in the CD remote mode.
93 En Note • The remote controller can lear n approximately 70 to 90 com- mands, although this will be less if commands that use a lot of memory are learned. • Remote controller buttons such as Play , Stop, Pause, and so on are preprogrammed with comma nds for controlling Onkyo CD players, cassette decks, and DVD players.
94 En Others T r oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using the A V controller, look for a solution in this section. If you can’t resolv e the issue your- self, contact your Onkyo dealer .

101 En About HDMI Designed to meet the increased demand s of digital TV , HDMI (High Definition Mult imedia Interface) is a new digi tal interface standard for connect ing TVs, projectors, Blu-ray Disc/D VD players, set-top boxes, and other video compo- nents.
102 En Using an RIHD-compatible TV , Pla yer , or Recorder p , which stands for Remote Interacti ve ov er HDMI, is the name of the system control function found on Onkyo components. The A V controller can be us ed with CEC (Consumer Electronics C ontrol), which allows system control ov er HDMI and is part of th e HDMI standard.
