9 1.4 P ositioning your r outer F or the best wireless signal transmission between the wir eless router and the network devic es connected to it, ensure that you: • Place the wireless r outer in a centralized ar ea for a maximum wireless co verage for the network devic es.
10 Mounting placemen t T o mount the wireless router onto its stand: 1. Locate the two mounting holes at the bottom of the wireless router . 2. Latch the stand’ s two mounting hooks to the wireless r outer ’ s mounting holes. 3. Slide the wireless rout er towards direction of the arrow to secur e it to its stand.
11 1.5 Setup Requirements T o set up your wireless network, you need a computer that meets the following sy stem requirements: • Ethernet RJ-45 (LAN) por t (10Base - T/100Base - T X) • IEEE 802.
12 1.6 Router Setup IMPORT ANT! • Use a wired connection when setting up your wir eless router to avoid possible setup pr oblems. • Befor e setting up your ASUS wireless rout er , do the following: • If you are replacing an existing r outer , disconnect it from your network.
13 2. Using the bundled network cable, c onnect your computer to your wireless r outer ’ s LAN por t. IMPORT ANT! Ensure that the LAN LED is blink ing. 3 Using another network cable, c onnect your modem to your wireless rout er ’ s W AN por t. 4. Inser t your modem ’ s AC adapter to the DC-IN port and plug it to a pow er outlet.

15 2 Getting star ted 2.1 Logging into the W eb GUI Y our ASUS Wir eless Router comes with an intuitive w eb graphical user inter face (GUI) that allo ws you to easily congur e its various featur es through a web br owser such as Internet Explorer , Fir efox, Safari, or Google Chrome .
16 2.2 Quick Internet Setup ( QIS) with Auto- detec tion The Quick Internet Setup (QIS) function guides you in quickly setting up your Internet connection. NO TE: When setting the Internet connection for the rst time, pr ess the Reset button on your wir eless router to r eset it to its factor y default settings.
17 2. The wireless r outer automatically detects if your ISP connection type is Dynamic IP , PPPoE , PPTP , L2TP , and Static IP . Key in the necessary information for your ISP c onnec tion type. IMPORT ANT ! Obtain the necessary information from your ISP about the Internet connection type.
18 f or Static IP NO TES : • The auto-detec tion of your ISP connection type takes place when you congur e the wireless router f or the rst time or when your wireless rout er is reset to its default settings.
19 4. Y our Internet and wireless settings are displa yed. Click Ne x t to continue. 5. Read the wireless network connection tutorial. When done, click Finish .
20 2.3 C onnec ting to your wir eless network After setting up your wir eless router via QIS, you can c onnec t your computer or other smart devices to your wir eless network . T o connect to your netw ork: 1. On your comput er , click the net work icon in the notication area to displa y the available wireless networks .
21 3 C onguring the General settings 3.1 Using the Netw ork Map Network Map allows y ou to congure y our network ’ s securit y settings, manage y our network clients, and monitor your USB device.
22 3.1.1 Setting up the wireless security settings T o protect your wireless network from unauthoriz ed access, you need to configure its security settings. T o set up the wireless security settings: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to General > Network Map .
23 4. Fr om the Security Lev el dropdown list , selec t the encr yption method for y our wireless network. IMPORT ANT! The IEEE 802.11n/ac standard pr ohibits using High Throughput with WEP or WP A- TKIP as the unicast cipher . If you use these encr yption methods, your data rat e will drop to IEEE 802.
24 3.1.3 Monitoring your USB devic e The ASUS RT-A C52U provides one USB 2.0 port for connecting USB devices or USB printer to allo w you to share files and print er with clients in your network. NO TE: T o use this feature , you need to plug a USB storage device , such as a USB hard disk or USB ash drive , to the USB 2.
25 IMPORT ANT! Y ou rst need to create a share ac count and its permission /access rights to allo w other network clients to access the USB device via an FTP site/third-party FTP client utility, Servers Center , Samba, or AiCloud. F or more details , refer t o the sec tion 3.
26 Safely removing the USB disk IMPORT ANT : I ncorrect removal of the USB disk ma y cause data corruption. T o safely remo ve the USB disk: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to General > Network Map . 2. In the upper right corner , click > Eject USB disk .
27 3.2 Crea ting a Guest Network The Guest Network pro vides temporar y visitors with Internet connectivity via access to separate SSIDs or networks without providing ac cess to your private netw ork . NO TE: RT -AC52U supports up to six SSIDs (three 2.

29 3.3 Using the T rac Manager 3.3.1 Managing QoS (Quality of S er vice) Bandwidth Quality of Ser vice (QoS) allows y ou to set the bandwidth priority and manage network trac. T o set up bandwidth priority: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to General > T rac Manager > QoS tab .
30 4. On the user-dened QoS rules page, there are f our default online ser vice types – web sur f , HT TPS and le transfers. Select your preferr ed ser vice, ll in the Source IP or MA C , Destination P ort , Protocol , T ransferred and P riority , then click Apply .
31 5. On the User-dened Priority page, y ou can prioritize the network applications or devices into v e levels from the user- dened QoS rules ’ dropdown list. Based on priority level, you can use the following methods t o send data packets: • Change the order of upstream network packets that ar e sent to the Internet.
32 3.3.2 Monitoring T rac The trac monitor function allows y ou to access the bandwidth usage and speed of your Internet, wired , and wireless networks . I t allows y ou to monitor network trac even on a daily basis . NO TE: Packets fr om the Internet are evenly transmitted t o the wired and wireless devices .
33 3.4 Setting up Par ental C ontrol P arental Contr ol allows you t o control the Internet access time . Users can set the time limit for a client’ s network usage. T o use the parental c ontrol function: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to General > P arental con trol .
34 3.5 Using the USB A pplication The USB Applications function provides AiDisk, Ser vers Center , Network Printer Server and Download Master submenus. IMPORT ANT! T o use the ser ver functions, you need to insert a USB storage device , such as a USB hard disk or USB ash drive, in the USB 2.
35 4. Create y our domain name via the ASUS DDNS ser vices, read the T erms of Ser vice and then selec t I will use the service and acc ept the T erms of service and key in your domain name. When done, click Ne x t . Y ou can also select Sk ip ASUS DDNS settings then click Next to skip the DDNS setting.
36 3.5.2 Using Ser vers C enter Ser vers Center allo ws you to shar e the media les from the USB disk via a Media Ser ver director y , Samba share service, or FTP share service. Y ou can also congure other settings for the USB disk in the Ser vers Center .
37 T o launch the Media S er ver setting page, go t o General > USB application > Servers Cen ter > Media Ser vers tab . Refer t o the following f or the descriptions of the elds: • Enable DLNA Media Ser ver : Select ON/OFF to enable/ disable the DLNA Media Ser ver .
38 T o delete an existing accoun t: a) Select the account that you want t o delete. b) Click . c) When prompt ed, click Delete to conrm the acc ount deletion. T o add a folder: a) Click . b) Ent er the folder name, and click Add . The f older that you created will be added t o the folder list.

F rom the list of folders , select the t ype of access permission that you want to assign f or specic folders: • R/W : Selec t this option to assign read/writ e access. • R: Select this option to assign read-only access. • No : Selec t this option if you do not want to shar e a specic le folder .
40 T o use FTP Share service: NO TE: Ensure that you ha ve set up your FTP server through AiDisk. For mor e details, ref er to the section 3.5.1 Using AiDisk . 1. From the na vigation panel, click General > USB applica tion > Ser vers C enter > FTP Share tab .
41 2. Congur e the following settings: • Maximum Login User Set the maximum number of concurrent connections of the Network Neighborhood or FTP Ser ver . NO TE: Some FTP clients may establish more than one connection. Setting this number too low will lead to login failur es.
42 • W ork Group Assigns the name of the local RT -AC52U network as seen in Network Neighborhood. NO TE: Fo r Device Name and W ork Group , the standard input characters include letters (a-z, A-Z), digits (0-9), space, undersc ores(_), and hyphens(-).
43 T o set up 3G/4G internet acc ess: 1. From the na vigation panel, click General > USB applica tion > 3G/4G . 2. I n the Enable USB Modem eld, select Ye s . 3. Set up the following: • Location: Select your 3G/4G service provider ’ s location from the dropdown list.
44 3.6 Using AiCloud AiCloud is a cloud ser vice application that allows y ou to save , sync, share , and access your les . T o use AiCloud: 1. F rom Google Play Stor e or Apple Store , download and install the ASUS AiCloud app to your smart device.
45 3.6.1 Cloud Disk T o create a cloud disk: 1. Inser t a USB storage device into the wireless r outer . 2. T urn on Cloud Disk . 3. Go to https://www .asusnetwork.net and enter the router login account and passw ord. F or better user experience, w e recommend that y ou use Google Chrome or Fi re fox .
46 4. Y ou can now start accessing Cloud Disk les on devices connected to the network. NO TE: When accessing the devices that ar e connected to the network, you need to enter the devic e’ s user name and password manually , which will not be saved b y AiCloud for security reason.
47 3.6.2 Smar t Acc ess The Smart Access function allows you t o easily access your home network via your r outer ’ s domain name. NO TES: • Y ou can create a domain name for y our router with ASUS DDNS. F or more details, r efer to section 4.3.5 DDNS .
48 3.6.3 Smar t Sync T o use Smar t Sync: 1. Launch AiCloud, click Smart Sync > Go . 2. Select ON to enable Smar t Sync. 3. Click Add new ac count . 4. Enter your ASUS W ebStorage account passwor d and select the director y that you want to sync with W ebStorage.
49 4 C onguring the A dvanc ed Settings 4.1 W ireless 4.1.1 General The General tab allows y ou to congur e the basic wireless settings. T o configure the basic wir eless settings: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Advanc ed Settings > W ireless > General tab .
50 4. In the Hide SSID eld, select Ye s to prevent wir eless devices from detecting your SSID . When this func tion is enabled, y ou would need to ent er the SSID manually on the wireless device to access the wir eless network.
51 • WP A/WP A2 P ersonal/WP A Auto-Personal : This option provides str ong security . Y ou can use either WP A (with TKIP) or WP A2 (with AES). I f you select this option, you must use TKIP + AES encr yption and enter the WP A passphrase (network key).
52 4.1.2 WPS WPS ( Wi-F i Pr otected Setup) is a wireless security standard that allows y ou to easily connect devices to a wireless network. Y ou can congure the WPS function via the PIN code or WPS button. NO TE : Ensure that the devices support WPS.
53 Note: WPS suppor ts authentication using Open System, WP A-Personal, and WP A2-Personal . WPS does not suppor t a wireless network that uses a Shared Key , WP A-Enterprise, WP A2-Enterprise, and RADIUS encryption method. 3. In the WPS Method eld, select Push Button or Client PIN code.
54 4.1.3 Bridge Bridge or WDS ( Wir eless Distribution System) allo ws your ASUS wireless rout er to connect to another wireless access point exclusiv ely , prev enting other wireless devices or stations to acc ess your ASUS wireless r outer .
55 • HY BRID : Enables the Wireless Bridge featur e and allows other wireless devices/stations t o connect to the router . NO TE: In H ybrid mode, wireless devic es connected to the ASUS wireless router will only r eceive half the connection speed of the Acc ess Point.
56 4.1.4 Wir eless MAC F ilter Wir eless MAC lt er provides contr ol over packets transmitted t o a specied MA C (Media Access C ontrol) address on your wir eless network. T o set up the W ireless MA C lter: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Advanc ed Settings > W ireless > W ireless MA C Filter tab .
57 4.1.5 RADIUS S etting RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial In User Service) Setting provides an extra lay er of security when you choose WP A- Enterprise, WP A2-Enterprise, or Radius with 802.1x as your Authentication Mode. T o set up wireless RADIUS settings: 1.
58 In the Professional Settings screen, y ou can congure the following: • Fr equency : S elect the frequenc y band that the prof essional settings will be applied to . • Enable Radio : Selec t Ye s to enable wireless networking. Select No to disable wireless networking.
59 • Date to Enable Radio (week end) : Y ou can specify which days of the w eekend wireless networking is enabled. • T ime of Day to Enable Radio : Y ou can specify a time range when wireless networking is enabled during the weekend.
60 • W ireless multicast forwarding : Select Enable to allow the wireless rout er to forward multicast trac to other wireless devices that support multicast.
61 T o modify the LAN IP settings: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Advanc ed Settings > LAN > LAN IP tab. 2. Modify the IP address and Subnet Mask . 3. When done, click Apply . 4.2.2 DHCP Ser ver Y our wireless router uses DHCP t o assign IP addresses automatically on your network.
62 3. In the Domain Name text box, enter a domain name for the wireless rout er . 4. In the IP Pool Starting Address eld , key in the star ting IP address . 5. In the IP Pool Ending A ddress eld, key in the ending IP address . 6. In the Lease T ime eld, specify in seconds when an assigned IP address will expire .
63 4.2.3 Route If your network makes use of more than one wir eless router , you can congure a r outing table to share the same Internet service. NO TE : W e recommend that you do not change the default r oute settings unless you hav e advanced knowledge of routing tables.
64 4.2.4 IPT V The wireless r outer suppor ts connection to IPT V ser vices through an ISP or a LAN. The IPT V tab provides the conguration settings needed to set up IPT V , V oIP , multicasting, and UDP for y our ser vice. C ontact your ISP for specic information r egarding your ser vice.
65 4.3 W AN 4.3.1 Internet Connection The Internet Connection screen allo ws you to congur e the settings of various W AN connec tion types. T o congure the W AN connection settings: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Advanc ed Settings > WA N > Internet C onnec tion tab .
66 E nable NA T : NA T (Network Addr ess T ranslation) is a system where one public IP ( W AN IP) is used to provide Internet access to network clients with a privat e IP address in a LAN. The private IP addr ess of each network client is saved in a NA T table and is used to rout e incoming data packets.
67 MA C Address : M AC (Media Acc ess Control) addr ess is a unique identier for y our network ing device. Some ISP s monitor the MA C address of networking devices that connect to their ser vice and reject any unr ecognized device that att empt to connect.
68 4.3.2 P or t T rigger P or t range triggering opens a predetermined incoming port for a limited period of time whenever a client on the local ar ea network makes an outgoing connection to a specied port.
69 T rigger Port : Specify a trigger por t to open the incoming port. Protoc ol : Select the protocol, T CP , or UDP . Incoming P ort : Specify an incoming por t to receiv e inbound data from the Internet. Protoc ol : Select the protocol, T CP , or UDP .
70 4.3.3 Virtual Ser ver/P or t F orwarding P or t forwarding is a method to direct network trac from the Internet to a specic port or a specic range of por ts to a device or number of devices on your local network.
71 2. Congure the f ollowing settings below . When done, click Apply . Enable P or t F or warding : Choose Ye s to enable P or t F or warding . F amous S er ver List : Det ermine which type of ser vice you want to access . F amous G ame List : This item lists ports required f or popular online games to work c orrectly .
72 Local IP : Key in the client’ s LAN IP address. NO TE : Use a static IP address f or the local client to make por t forwarding work properly . Refer to section 4.2 LAN for information. Local P ort : Enter a specic por t to receive f or warded packets .
73 4.3.4 DMZ Virtual DMZ exposes one client to the Internet, allowing this client to rec eive all inbound packets directed to your L ocal Area Network. Inbound trac from the Internet is usually discarded and rout ed to a specic client only if port for warding or a port trigger has been congured on the network.
74 4.3.5 DDNS Setting up DDNS (Dynamic DNS) allows you to acc ess the router from outside your netw ork through the provided ASUS DDNS Ser vice or another DDNS ser vice. T o set up DDNS: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Advanc ed Settings > WA N > DDNS tab .
75 Enable wildcard : Enable wildcard if y our DDNS ser vice requires one . NO TES : DDNS ser vice will not work under these conditions: • When the wireless rout er is using a private W AN IP address (192.168. x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 172.16.x.x), as indicated by a yello w text.
76 4.4 IPv6 This wireless r outer suppor ts IPv6 addressing , a system that suppor ts more IP addresses . This standard is not yet widely available . Contact your ISP if your Internet service suppor ts IPv6. T o set up IPv6: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Advanc ed Settings > IPv6 .
77 4.5 VPN S er ver VPN ( Virtual Private Network) provides a secur e communication to a remot e computer or remote netw ork using a public network such as the Internet. NO TE : Before setting up a VPN connection, you would need the IP address or domain name of the VPN ser ver you are trying to access.
78 4.6 F irew all The wireless r outer can ser ve as a hardwar e rewall for y our network. NO TE : The F irewall featur e is enabled by default. 4.6.1 General T o set up basic Fir ewall settings: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Advanc ed Settings > Fir ewall > General tab .
79 T o set up a URL lter: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Advanc ed Settings > Fir ewall > URL F ilter tab . 2. On the Enable URL F ilter eld, select Enabled . 3. Enter a URL and click the button. 4. Click Apply . 4.6.3 Ke y word lter Keyword lter blocks acc ess to webpages containing specied key wo rds.
80 3. Enter a wor d or phrase and click the Add button. 4. Click Apply . NO TES: • The Keyword F ilter is based on a DNS query . If a net work client has already accessed a w ebsite such as http://www.abcxxx.c om, then the website will not be blocked (a DNS cache in the syst em stores previously visited w ebsites).
81 T o set up a Network Service lter: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Advanc ed Settings > Fir ewall > Netw ork Ser vice F ilter tab. 2. On the Enable Network Ser vices F ilter eld, select Ye s . 3. Select the Filter table type. Black List blocks the specied network ser vices.
82 4.7 Administr ation 4.7.1 Opera tion Mode The Operation Mode page allows y ou to select the appropriate mode for y our network. T o set up the operating mode: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Advanc ed Settings > Administr ation > Opera tion Mode tab.

87 5.2 F irmw are Restoration F irmware Rest oration is used on an ASUS Wir eless Router that failed during its rmwar e upgrading process . It uploads the rmwar e that you specify . The process takes about thr ee to four minutes. IMPORT ANT: Launch the r escue mode on the router bef ore using the F irmware Restoration utility .
88 3. Set a static IP on your computer and use the f ollowing to set up your T CP/IP settings: IP addr ess : 192.168.1.x Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0 4. F rom your c omputer ’ s desktop, click Star t > All Pr ograms > ASUS Utility RT -AC52U Wireless Router > Firm war e Restoration .
89 NO TE: The print server function is suppor ted on Windows® XP , Windo ws® Vista, and Windo ws® 7. T o set up the EZ Printer sharing mode: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to General > USB Application > Network P rinter Ser ver . 2. Click Download Now! t o download the network printer utility .
