8 Getting Started W all mounting The base can be installed on any standar d wall phone outlet as shown below . Choose a location a wa y fr om electronic equipment, such as personal computers, computer rout- ers, television sets or micr owa ve o vens. Av oid excessive heat, cold, dust or moisture.

12 T elephone Operation V olume control Press the top ( + ) or the bottom ( - ) of the VOLUME button on the handset or press ^ or V of the VOLUME button on the base to adjust listening volume. Each button press raises or lo wers v olume by one le vel.
13 T elephone Operation Mute Press MUTE to silence the micr ophone. Y ou will see MICROPHONE MUTED in the displa y f or four sec- onds. A MUTE indicator will sta y in the displa y while the call is muted. If you ar e using the base speak erphone, the MUTE button indicator will also be on.
14 T elephone Operation Inter com calls Intercom calls If you ha v e mor e than one handset, use the intercom featur e to ha ve con versations betw een the handsets and base. • Press the INTERCOM button on a handset or on the base to initiate an inter com call.
15 T elephone Operation Call forwar d An external call can be forwar ded between the follo w- ing parties: • Fr om one handset to another handset. • Fr om a handset to the base . • Fr om the base to a handset. Call forward Y ou can forward an external call fr om one handset to another handset or to the base.

Call transfer During a conv ersation you can transf er the call to another handset or to the base.

22 Directory Shared dir ector y The directory is stored in the base, and is shared by all handsets and base. Changes made at any one handset or base will be reflected in all. Memor y capacity The directory can store up to 50 ent ries. Each entry can contai n a n umber u p to 32 digit s, and a name up to 16 letters long.

27 Caller ID Log Ho w Caller ID works If you subscribe to Caller ID service pro vided by your local phone company , information about each caller will be displa yed after the first ring. Information about the last 50 incoming calls is stor ed in the call log.
28 Caller ID Log About names Names of calle rs will be disp la ye d only if this info rmation is pro vided by your local telephone compan y . If the telephone number of the person calling exactly matches a number in y our directory , the name that appears on the screen will match the name that y ou entered into y our direc- tor y .

31 A n s w e r i n g S y s t e m O p e r a t i o n Messag e capacity The answ ering system can recor d up to 99 messages, depending on the length of each message. Individual messages can be up to four minutes long, and total maximum r ecording time is 15 minutes.

42 Appendix Aler t tones & indicator lights Two short beeps Press VOLUME keys while the volume levels are already at limits. Indicator lights IN USE On when handset or base is in use. Flashes when another phone is in use on the same line, when ringing, or answering system is answering an incoming call.

47 Appendix If you ar e r eplacing a handset on a system that has the maximum number of r egistered handsets (four) or wish to change the assigned handset n umber of your r egistered handsets, you must first de-r egister the handsets, then re-r egister all handsets.

Or you can r e-register handsets to a new base unit, if you ha ve replaced y our base unit for an y reason. 50 Appendix The CHARGING light is off • Clean the charging contacts on the cordless handset(s) and telephone base each month using a pencil eraser or a dry non-abrasive fabric. • Make sure the power adapter and telephone line cor ds are plugged in correctly and secur ely .
51 Appendix I cannot dial out • Make sure ther e is a dial tone before dialing. It is normal if the cord- less handset takes a second or two to synchr onize with the telephone base before pr oducing a dial tone. Wait an extra second befor e dial- ing.
52 Appendix I hear other calls when using the tele- phone. • Disconnect the telephone base from the telephone jack. Plug in a dif- ferent telephone. If you still hear other calls, the pr oblem is probably in the wiring or local service. Call your local telephone company .
53 Appendix I hear noise in the cordless handset, and none of the keys or buttons work • Make sure the telephone line cor d is plugged in securely . My caller ID features ar e not working prop- erly • Caller ID is a subscription service.
54 Appendix The answering system does not recor d message • Make sure the answering system is turned on. When the answering system is on, the red light on the ANSWER ON/OFF key is lit. • Make sure the Announcement Only featur e is off (see page 34).
