2 Getting Started 2 CID V (volume down) When phone is idle, press CID V to dis- play Caller ID information (see page 29). While entering names or phone numbers, press to delete last character entered. While programming, press to change menu item or value (see pages 10-12).

6 Getting Started 6 T elephone base installation Install the telephone base as shown below . Choose a location within the home: • A wa y from any other cor dless (wir eless) device such as cor dless telephones, 802.11 wireless r outer (for example , WiFi).
7 Getting Started 7 Batter y installation & charging After batter y installation, place the cordless handset in the charger and allow to charge for at least 16 hours befor e use. Y ou can keep the battery charged by returning the cor d- less handset to the charger after each use.
8 Getting Started 8 W all mounting The telephone base can be installed on any standar d wall-phone outlet as shown belo w . Choose a location a wa y from electr onic equipment such as personal computers, com- puter routers, television sets or micro wa v e ov ens.
9 Getting Started 9 Belt clip & optional headset Install belt clip as shown below if desir ed. Snap belt clip into notches on side of handset. Rotate and pull to remove. Plug 2.5 mm headset into jack on side of handset (beneath small rubber flap).
10 T elephone Operation 10 Handset settings Y ou can change settings to program ho w the cordless handset works. • Press MENU/ CHAN , then use the CID V or ^ DIR but- tons to scroll to the f eatur e to be changed. Press SELECT to select the displa y ed item.
11 T elephone Operation 11 Handset settings Set handset date and time The handset displa ys the date and time when idle. Y ou can set the time manually , or you can allow it to be set automatically with incoming Caller ID information.
12 T elephone Operation 12 Handset settings Set handset ringer tone This featur e allows y ou to choose one of 4 ringing tones, (1-4) or turn the ringer off ( 0 ). Use the CID V or ^ DIR button to hear an example of each ringer tone, then press SELECT to select the one y ou pr efer .
13 T elephone Operation 13 Base settings Y ou can change settings to program ho w the telephone base works. Follow the steps belo w to pr ogram the telephone base. T o stop at any time, press CLEAR . If the phone rings, pro- gramming stops automatically so y ou can answ er the call.
14 T elephone Operation Base settings Choose base ringer v olume The base ringer volume can be set to OFF , LOW , or HI, by adjusting the switch on the left side of the telephone base. This switch affects only the telephone base ringer volume; the handset ringer v olume remains unchanged.

22 Directories Directories (handset and base) There ar e tw o separate dir ectories, one on the cordless handset and one on the telephone base. Each dir ec- tor y can stor e up to 30 entries. Each entr y can contain a number up to 24 digits, and a name up to 15 letters.

Y ou can enter nine Speed Dial numbers up to 24 digits. Each entr y is associated with a dialpad numeral k e y .

Caller ID Operation Ho w Caller ID w orks If you subscribe to Caller ID service provided b y y our local phone company , information about each caller will be displa y ed at both the cordless handset and the tele- phone base after the first or second ring.
30 Caller ID Operation There ar e also occasions when other information or no information is displa yed for various r easons: On-Screen Messa ge Reason PRIVATE NAME Caller prefers to remain anonymous. PRIVATE CALLER Caller's name and telephone number are not revealed at caller's request.
31 Caller ID Operation 31 CID memor y Memor y Capacity E5908 telephone can store up to 30 CID r ecor ds in both the telephone base and the cordless handset respectiv ely . These numbers ar e a vailable for subse- quent retrie val or for sa ving into the internal director y for long-term storage until they ar e deleted.
32 Caller ID Operation 32 CID memor y Dialing from CID Memory • Press CID V on the telephone base or on the cord- less handset to activate the CID Memor y . • Press CID V or DIR ^ on the telephone base or on the cordless handset to scr oll to the desir ed number to be dialed.
33 Caller ID Operation 33 CID memor y • Press SELECT to edit the telephone number . Y ou can mak e any changes to the n umber by using the CID V button to erase characters, or using the dialpad to enter new ones (see pages 25-26 for instructions). • Press SELECT .

35 Caller ID Operation 35 Call waiting If you ha ve subscribed to the Call W aiting ser vice from your local telephone compan y , you will hear a beep if there is an incoming call while y ou ar e alr eady on the phone. The telephone number of the new incoming call will also be displa y ed on the scr een.
36 Answering System Operation Messag e capacity The answ ering system can recor d up to 95 messages, depending on the length of each message. Individual messages can be up to four minutes long, and total maximum r ecording time is 15 min utes. Messages will remain a vailable for repla y until you delete them.

Befor e using the answ ering system, follow the steps at left to set the da y and time, so messages are dated cor - rectl y .

If you ha ve new messages waiting, you will hear only the new messages (oldest first). If ther e are no ne w messages, the system will pla y back all messages (oldest first).

43 Answering System Operation 43 1. Remote access A two digit security code is r equir ed to access y our answ ering system fr om any touch-tone telephone. This code is 19 by default; see page 39 to change it. Dial your telephone number from any touch-tone telephone.
44 Appendix 44 CONNECTING... The handset is waiting for a dial tone. NEEDS RECHARGING Handset battery is depleted. Place handset in charger to charge the battery. BATTERY LOW Handset battery is low. Place handset in charger to charge the battery. RINGER OFF The handset ringer is turned off.

49 Appendix T r oubleshooting My cordless handset does not ring when I receive a call. • Make sure that the ringer is turned on. Refer to the section(s) on ringer selection in this user’ s manual. • Make sure the telephone line cor d is plugged securely into the tele- phone base and the telephone jack.
50 Appendix T r oubleshooting The CHARGING light is off. • Clean the cordless handset and charging contacts on the charger each month using a pencil eraser or cloth. • Make sure the power and line cor ds are plugged in corr ectly and securely . • Unplug the unit’ s electrical power .
