1 Chapter 1 Introduction Overview The Master View CL-1208 / CL-1216 KVM Swi tch is a control unit that allows access to multiple computers from a single KVM (keyboard, monitor, and mouse), console.
CL-1208 / CL-1216 User Manual 2 Setup is fast and easy; plugging cables in to their appropriate por ts is all that is entailed. Because the CL-1208 / CL-1216 intercepts keyboard input directly, there is no software to configure; no need to g et involved in complex installation routines ; nor any n eed to be concerned with incompatibility problems.

9 Chapter 2 Inst allation Before you Begin S t andard Rack Mounting A standard rack mounting kit is pro vid ed with your CL- 1208 / CL-1216. The kit enables the sw itch to be mounted in rack with a dep th of 42.0 - 82.0 cm. Note: It takes two people to mount the switch : one to hold it in place; the other to screw it in.
CL-1208 / CL-1216 User Manual 10 To rack mount the switch, do the following : 1. While one person po sitions the switch in the rack and holds it in p lace, the second person - using the screws provided with the rack mounting kit - loosely screws the front brackets to the rack.

17 Chapter 3 Basic Operation Opening the Console The CL-1208 / CL-1216's console is lo cated under the top cover. To access the console, slide the co nsole module out and raise the cover. Note: As a safety precaution, to keep th e console from accidentally s liding out, the console is locked into the In po si tio n.

Pull the safety catches on the unit's side rails toward you and push the module in unti l it stops. 2. Release the catches; pull the module sli ghtly toward you; then push it all the way in.
3. Basic Operation 19 Operating Precautions Right! Rest your hands and arms lightly on the keyboard module as you work. Wro ng ! DO NOT lean your body weight on the keyboard module. DO NOT place heavy objects on the keyboard module. The maximum load bearing capacity of the keybo ard m odu le is 30kg.

3. Basic Operation 21 The Adjustment Settings An explanation of the LCD OSD adjustment settings is given in the table below: Setting Explanation Brightness Adjusts the background bl ack level of the screen image. Contrast Adjusts the foreground white level of the screen image.
CL-1208 / CL-1216 User Manual 22 Port Selection The CL-1208 / CL-1216 prov ides three port selection methods to access the computers on the installation: Manual ; OSD (On Screen Display) men us, and Hotkey. OSD Operation is discussed in the next chapter; Hotkey Port Select ion is discussed de tail in Chapter 5.
3. Basic Operation 23 Hot Plugging The CL-1208 / CL-1216 supports hot plugging - components can be removed and added back into the install ation by unplugging t heir cables from the ports without the need to shut the unit down.
CL-1208 / CL-1216 User Manual 24 Powering Off and Rest arting If it becomes necessary to Power Off one of the ACS- 1208A / ACS-1216A units, unplug the power adapter cable from the rear panel. Before starting it back up you must do the following: 1. Shut down all the com put ers that are attached to it.
3. Basic Operation 25 Port ID Numbering Each KVM port on a Master View installation is assigned a unique Port ID. The Port ID is made up of two parts: a Station Number , and a Port Number : The S tation Number - is a two digit number whi ch reflects the switch's position in the daisy chain sequence.

27 Chapter 4 OSD Operation OSD Overview The On Screen Display (OSD) is a menu d riven method to handle computer control and switchi ng operations. All pr ocedures start from the OSD Main Screen. To pop up the Main Screen, tap the OSD key (see p. 63), or tap the [Scroll Lock] key twice.

The User Main Screen does not show the F4 and F6 functions, since these are reserved for the Administrator and can't be accessed by ordinary Users.
4. OSD Operation 29 OSD Navigation T o dismiss the menu, and d eactivate the OSD, Click the X at the upper right corner of the OSD W indow; or press [Esc] . T o Logout, Click F8 or the Z Z Z symbol at the top of the Main Screen, or press [F8] .

For example, you can: rapidly switch to any port; scan selected ports only; limit the list you wish to view; designate a port as a Quick Vi ew Port; create or edit a port name; or make OSD setting adjustments.
4. OSD Operation 31 F2 LIST This function le ts you broaden or narr ow the scope of which ports th e OSD displays (lists) on the Main Screen. Many of the OSD fun ctions only operate on the computers currently selected for Listing on the Main Screen with this function.
CL-1208 / CL-1216 User Manual 32 F3 SET This function allows the Administrator and each User to set up their own, individual, working environm ent. A sep arate profile for each is stored by the OSD and is activated according to th e Username provided during Login.
4. OSD Operation 33 (Continued from previous page.) Setting Function PORT ID DISPLA Y MODE Selects how the Port ID is displayed: the Port Number alone ( PORT NUMBER ); the Port Name alone ( PORT NAME ); or the Port Number plus the Port Name ( PORT NUMBER + PORT NAME ).
CL-1208 / CL-1216 User Manual 34 F4 ADM F4 is an Administrator only fun ction. It allows the Administrator to con figure and control the overall oper ation of the OSD. To change a setting Double Click it; or use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to m ove th e highlight bar to it then press [Enter] .

CL-1208 / CL-1216 User Manual 38 F5 SKP This function enables you to easily skip backward or forw ard - switching the KVM focus from the currently active comp uter port to the previou s or next available one.
4. OSD Operation 39 F6 BRC F6 is an Administrator only function. When this function is in effect, commands sent from the console are br oadcast to all available computers on the installation.
CL-1208 / CL-1216 User Manual 40 F7 SCAN This function automatically switches am ong the available computers at regular intervals so that you can monito r thei r activity without having to tak e the trouble of switching ma nually.
4. OSD Operation 41 F8 LOUT Clicking the F8 field or, o r pressing [F8] logs you out of the OSD, and blanks the Console screen. This is different from simply deactiv ating the OSD when you are at the Main Screen by pressing [Esc].

43 Chapter 5 Hotkey Operation Hotkey Port Access Hotkey Port Access allows you to provide the KVM focus to any computer on your installation directl y from the keyboard.
CL-1208 / CL-1216 User Manual 44 Selecting the Active Port Each KVM port is assigned a unique Port ID (see Port ID Numbering , p. 25). You can directly access an y computer on the inst allation with a Hotkey combination that specifies the Port ID of the KVM Port that the computer is connected to.
5. Hotkey Operation 45 Invoking Auto Scan: To start Auto Scanning, key in the fol low ing Hotkey combination: 1. Invoke HKM (see p. 43). 2. Press [A] .
CL-1208 / CL-1216 User Manual 46 Skip Mode This feature allows you to switch between comput ers in order to monito r them manually. You can dwel l on a particular port for as long or as little as you like - as opposed to Auto Scanning, whic h automatically switches after a fixed interval.
5. Hotkey Operation 47 Hotkey Beeper Control The Beeper can be Hotkey toggled On and Off (see Activate Beeper, p. 35). To toggle the Beeper, key in the foll o wing Hotkey comb in at ion: 1. Invoke HKM (see p. 43). 2. Press [B] After you press B , the Beeper toggles On or Off.
CL-1208 / CL-1216 User Manual 48 Hotkey Summary T able [Num Lock] + [-] [Port ID] [Enter] Switches the KVM focus to the computer that corresponds to that Port ID [A] Invokes Auto Scan Mode. When Auto Scan Mode is in effect, [P] or Left Click pauses Auto Scanning.
49 Chapter 6 The Firmware Upgrade Utility The Windows-based Firmware Upgrade Uti lit y (FWUpg rade.exe) provides a smooth, automated process for u pgrading the KVM swit ch's firmware. The Utility comes as part of a Firmware Upgrade Package th at is specific for each device.

From a computer that is not part of your KVM installation go to our Inter- net support site and choose the model name that rel ates to you r devi ce to get a list of available Firmware Upgrade Packages.
6. The Firmware Upgrade Utility 51 S t arting the Upgrade To upgrade your firmware: 1. Run the down loaded Firmware Upgrade Package file - either by double clicking the file icon, o r by openin g a command line and entering the full path to it.

6. The Firmware Upgrade Utility 55 Firmware Upgrade Recovery There are basically three conditions that call for firmware upg rade reco very: When you invoke Firmware Upgrade Mode (see Preparation , p. 50), but decide not to proceed with the upgrade.
