4 Introduction ˆ Introduction Thank you for p urchasing the Radio Shack Digital Telepho ne Answering System. Your system is a sophisticated, fully digital message center. Fully digital me ans th e system stores all messages on a compu ter chip. This gives you advanced capabilities ov er a tape-based answerin g machine.
5 Introduction Voice Activa ted Recording (VOX) Detect ion — the system stops recording w hen the caller hang s up or after 7 se conds of silence to help conserve memory space. Remote Operation — l ets you use a touch -tone phone (or rotary phone and pocket tone dialer) to operate the system while you are away from your home or office.
6 Installation If you use more than o ne phone or other de vice on the li ne, add up all the RENs. If the total is more than five (or three in rural areas), your phone might not ring and your system might not answer. If ringer operation is impaired, remove a devi ce from the line.
7 Installation Cautions: • T o avoid losing stored information, be sure the AC adapter is plugged into an AC outl et before you repla ce the battery . • If you do not plan to use the system with batteries for a month or longer , remove the batteries.
8 Preparation 1. Plug the system’s modular phone line cord into the wall jack. 2. Plug the modular phone line cord (n ot suppli ed) from your telephone into the modular phone jack on the ba ck of the system. CONNECTING AC POWER Plug the AC adapter into a standard AC outlet.
9 Preparation When the MESSAGE indicator lights continuously, the system is ready to answer calls. To turn off the system, press ST OP/ON/OFF . The MESSAGE indicator turns off and the system beeps. You can also turn on the system remotely (see “Setting the System to Answer Calls” on Page 12).
10 Preparation 4. Repeatedly press or hold down MINUTE/TWO WA Y until you hear the correct minute. Note: When you hold do wn MINUTE/TWO W A Y , the sys tem moves forward in 10 minute inte rvals until it reaches 00. 5. Release TIME/SKIP . The system announces the day and time you set.
11 Preparation 1. Hold down HOUR/A NNOUNCE . The system beeps. 2. Speak clearly into the microphone from abo ut 10 inches in front of the system. The MESSAGE indicator flashes. 3. When you finish your message, release HOUR/ANNOUNCE . The system sounds a tone and automatically plays back your recorded message.
12 Operation 4 – The system answers after four rings. 7 – The system answers after seven rings. TS (T oll Saver) – If there are new messages, the system answers after two rings. Otherwise, the system answers after four rings. This lets you avoid unnecessary charges when calling by l ong distance to check your messages.
13 Operation outgoing message or recording an i ncoming message and resets to answer another call. Notes: • If the system’ s memory is full, it answers calls after 10 rings. The caller hears “No one is available to take your call,” the system sounds a beep, and the call er cannot leave a message.
14 Operation To record a message, slide INCOMING MSG to ANN ON L Y , then hold down HOUR/ANNOUNCE . After the beep, spe ak clearly into the microphone from about 10 inches in front of the system. (The message can be about 30 seconds long.) Rele ase HOUR/ ANNOUNCE to stop recording.
15 Operation SCREENING CALLS To screen your calls, let the system answer. Listen to the caller’s message through the system’s speaker. If you decide to answer the call, pi ck up any phon e connected to the same phone line as the system. The system stops rec o rding and resets to answer the next call.
16 Operation RECORDING A T WO-WAY PHONE CONVERSATION You can record both sides of a conversation on any phone connected to the same phone line as the system. At any time during the conversation , press MINUTE/TWO W A Y . After a beep, the system starts recording.
17 Operation Note: If there are no messages, the system beeps. To replay the messages, press PL A Y /P AUSE . To pause while listening to messages, press PLA Y/P AUSE . The playback resumes when you press PL A Y/P AUSE again. The system returns to the answer-ready mode after 7 se conds if you do not press PLA Y/P AUSE again.
18 Remote Operation Note: If you press DELETE before playback of all messages, the system sounds tones to alert you. You cannot delete all messages until you playback all new messages.
19 Remote Operation system continues to play the messages, the caller hears a busy signal. We recommend that you exit remote access using th e appropriate remote command until the system beeps once before you hang up. OPERATING THE SYSTEM FROM A REMOTE LOCATION 1.
20 Troubleshooting REMOTE COMMANDS ˆ T roubleshooting We do not expect you to have any problems with your system, but if you do, try these suggestions. If the system still does not Press T o 1# Play new messages. 2# Play all messages. 3# Delete current message.
21 Troubleshooting operate properly, take it to your local RadioSh ack store for assistance. CARE Keep the system dry; if it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Use and store the system only in normal temperature environments. Problem Remedy The system does not answer calls.
22 Troubleshooting Handle the system carefully; do not drop it. Keep the system away from dust and dirt, and wipe it with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking new. Modifying or tampering with the system’s internal components can cause a malfunctio n and might in validate its warranty and void your FCC authorization to operate it.
23 Troubleshooting • Increase the distance between the equipment and the radio or TV . • Use outlets on different electrical circuits for the eq uipment and the radio or TV .
