iii About this Handbook Introduction This handbook describes the Ray5 4E fixed VHF marine radio. The Ray 54E provides two-way co mmunications on al l Int ernational marine channels, pre-set private chan nels, and (if pr ogrammed) all US and Canadian and marine channels.

Chapter 1: Intro duction 1 Chapter 1: Intr oduction 1.1 Ray54E Fix ed Station VHF Radio The Ray54E marine VHF radiotelephone is a micropro cessor-cont rolled transceiver that p rovides reliable simplex (single fr equency) and semi- duplex (two frequency) communi cations.

Chapter 2: Installation 3 Chapter 2: Installation 2.1 Unpacking and Inspection Use care when unpacking the unit from the shipping carton to prevent damage to the contents. It is also good practice to sav e the carton and the interior packing material in the event you must return the unit to the f actory .
4 Ray54E VHF Radio 2.2 Planning the Installation When planning the i nstallation of your Ray54E , consider the following conditions to ensure dep endable and trouble-free operati on. Mount the main unit to al low easy access from the location where the b oat is normally na vigated.

6 Ray54E VHF Radio 2.3 P ower Connections The red and black Power Cord provides connect ion to DC power . The red (+) wire contains a 7 amp in- line fuse. It should be connect ed to the positive terminal of the power source. The blac k (-) wire should be connected to the negative (ground) of the po wer source.
Chapter 2: Installation 7 2.4 External Speaker Connections Located just below the powe r cord is a cable for connection to an optional external speaker . Connect th e white(+) wire and black (–) wire to the speaker observing polari ty as it is marked o n the speaker .
8 Ray54E VHF Radio 2.7 Antenna Connections The coaxial VHF antenna cable connects to the Ra y54 E antenna jack on the rear panel using a PL259 VHF type connect or . The antenna cable length can be critical to performance. If y ou are uncertain, contact a professional installer or call Raymarine Product Su pport.

12 Ray54E VHF Radio 9. CALL/MENU Press and release this key to sele ct to enter DSC Call Mode, which is used for making DSC Calls and viewin g the DSC Call Logs and the DSC Call Phonebook. A Maritime Mobile Service Iden tity (MMSI) number is requir ed to operate the DSC equipment in this radio.
Chapter 3: Getting Sta rted 13 Press and hold CALL/ME NU to select Menu Mode, w hich is used to set up the radio. The menu structure is outl ined in the following drawi ng. 14 Ray54E VHF Radio 12. 16/PLUS Use this key to switch to the priority ch annel or to chan ge the value of the Secondary Priority (PLUS) Channel. 13. CLEAR Press and release to terminate a function and return to the last-used channel. Press and hold to select the W eather mode (if available).
Chapter 3: Getting Sta rted 15 3. (RX) Receiving Indicates that the radio is receiving a radio signal. 4. (LOCAL) Local/Distant Mode Indicates the radio is in Local Rece ption mode, which decreases receiver sensitivity in high traf fic areas to decrease unwanted reception.
16 Ray54E VHF Radio 13. (U I C) Channel Set Indicates which channel set is selected: U S, I nternational or C anadian. Note: Special licensing i s required to receive the US and Canadian channel sets. 14. (A) Simplex Channel Indicates that the current ly-selected channel is s implex; you transmit and receive on the same frequency .
Chapter 4: General Oper ations 17 Chapter 4: Gener al Oper ations 4.1 T urning the Pow er ON and OFF Tu r n t h e PWR/VOL knob clockwise unti l it clicks. When the unit powers up in N ormal mode it: 1. Beeps, illuminates the back light at full brigh tness, and displays all seg- ments and indicator s for 2 se conds.
18 Ray54E VHF Radio Press and r elease the HL/USER key o n the main unit or micro phone to toggle the TX power from LOW (1 watt) to HIGH (25 watts). The corresponding LO or HI indicator ap pears on the LCD . As a part of marine communications co urtesy , init ial contact should alway s be attempted using lo w power .
Chapter 4: General Oper ations 19 4.6 Selecting a Weather Channel (If A vailable) The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administ ration (NOAA) broadcasts continu ous weather reports and severe weather alerts, as needed. If so equipped, y our Ray54E is prog rammed to receive 10 weather channels and sound an alarm if a weather alert is received.

Chapter 4: General Oper ations 21 Note: When you press the 16/PLUS key, the radio always switches to HIGH power. You can use the HL/USER key t o change to LOW power. 4.8 Selecting the Secondary Priority (PLUS) Channel The Ray54E enables you to prog ram the 16/PLUS key to store a Secondary Priority or Favourite ( PLUS) Channel.
22 Ray54E VHF Radio If already on the Secondary Priority (PLUS) Channel, pr ess and re lease the 16/PLUS key to switch to Priority Channel 16 at high p ower . Reprogr aming the Secondary Priority (PLUS) Channel 1. Press and hold the 16/PLUS key for gr eater 3 seconds to switch to the Secondary Priority (PLUS) Channel.
Chapter 4: General Oper ations 23 4.9 T ransmitting Press and hold the Push-t o-T alk ( PTT ) key on the microphone to transmit on the selected channel, then release to receive .
24 Ray54E VHF Radio All Scan Press and r elease the SCAN/SA VE key when no channe ls are stored in memory to activate t he All Scan functio n. ALL SCAN appears on th e dot matrix disp lay . In All Scan mode, all channels in the channel set are scanned in sequence, assuming no channels have been stored in memory .
Chapter 4: General Oper ations 25 Priority All Scan Press and hold the SCAN/SA VE key while All Scan is active to initiat e Priority Scan. ALL PSCAN appears on the dot matrix display . Priority Scan searches for activity on all channels but alternates scanning the Priority Ch annel 16 afte r each channel.
26 Ray54E VHF Radio Press and r elease the CLEAR key to exit Priority/Pr iority Saved Scan and return to the last-used channel. 4.11 Adding Channels to Memory The Ray54E can store any channel (incl uding Private Channels). The stored channels are the ones scanned in the Saved (Memory) Scan mode.
Chapter 4: General Oper ations 27 4.12 Using the Monitor Modes The W atch Modes monitor the programme d Priorit y Channel and other user- selected channel(s). The watch is ha lted when activity is detected on a monitored channel. The Ray54E i s equipped with 2 types of monit or operations: Dual W atch and T ri W atch.

T ri W a tch monitors in cycle channel 16, the current working channel and the channel you have set as the Secondary Pr iority (PLUS) Channel.
Chapter 4: General Oper ations 29 4.13 USER Channel Mode Press and hold the HL/USER key wh ile in normal operati on mode to enter User Mode. The USER and SA VED indicators appear .
30 Ray54E VHF Radio 4.15 Menu Mode Operation Press and hold the CALL/MENU key while in normal operation mode to enter Menu Mode. Menu mode is fully described in Chapter 6:.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal ling (DSC) 31 Chapter 5: Digital Selective Calling (DSC) The Ray54E includes equipment for Class “D” Digital Selective Calling (DSC). DSC protocol is a glo bally applied system used to send and receive digital calls.
32 Ray54E VHF Radio include Automatic T ransmitter Identification S ystem (A TIS) functio nality. If ATIS has been enabled, certai n prog ramming steps have been implemented to protect the integrity of this agreement, includi ng the blocking of D SC functions when ATIS i s active.

However , you can also press the microphon e UP/ DOWN keys to make sel ections, and then press the microphon e HI/LO key to accept.
34 Ray54E VHF Radio 5.2 Individual Calls The Ray54E can make Indi vidual Routine call s. Making DSC Calls to Coast Stations The examples in th is handbook illustra te making DSC calls to Ship S tations. However, the procedures for ma king In dividual Calls to a Coast Station are diff erent.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective C alling (DSC) 35 3. Rotate the CH knob until th e arrow points to the desired i ndividual na me. If using MANUAL MMSI ID entry: Enter the MMSI number using the CH knob. Ro tate the CH knob to select each character and then push in the CH knob to accept.
36 Ray54E VHF Radio 6. Push in the CH knob to ac cept the selection. 7. Push CH knob again to send the Individual Cal l. The Individual Call is transmitted on channel 70, and then th e radio tunes to the original channel and waits f or acknowledgement.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal ling (DSC) 37 Receiving Individual Calls When an Individual Call is received, the radio s ounds an alert tone and displays the type of call, the name or MMSI number (if the caller ’ s MMSI number has not been programmed in to yo ur Phonebook) of the call er and the time the call was initiated.
38 Ray54E VHF Radio If the caller requests th at you chan ge to an unsup ported working chann el the message INV ALID CHANNEL appea rs on the LCD. If an acknowledge is sent, the originating station is notified you were UNABLE T O COMPL Y wi th the channel change request.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal ling (DSC) 39 3. Push in th e CH knob to sele ct GROUP . The Group Call menu app ears, which displays the Group en tries you have saved. Note: Only the Group IDs that h ave been programmed into mem ory ap- pear in the list.
40 Ray54E VHF Radio 8. Push the CH k nob again to sen d the Group Call. The Group Call is transmit ted on channel 70, and then t he radio tunes to the designated working chan nel to be used for the Group Cal l. 9. Press PTT to communicate on the specified channel.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal ling (DSC) 41 ➤ T o accept the Gr oup Call: Push the CH knob. The alert tone i s muted (if you have not already pressed another key). The LCD indicates that th e channel has been changed to the one designated by the caller .
42 Ray54E VHF Radio 5.4 All Ships Calls An All Ships Call sends out a message to all ships within range that you need to advise of a hazardous situation or that you require assistance but the situation is not serio us enough for a Distress Call.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal ling (DSC) 43 4. Rotate the CH knob to select URGENCY or SAFETY . 5. Press the CH knob again to send the call. 6. Push CH one more time to reconfirm the All Shi ps Call. The call is transmitted on channel 70, and then the radio tunes to channel 16 at high power .
44 Ray54E VHF Radio ➤ T o silence the a lert tone: Press any key . Automatic alert tone ca ncellation takes place after 2 minutes. ➤ T o decline the All Ships Call: Press the CLEAR key . The alert tone is muted, the All Ships Call is interrupted and the normal screen appears on the display .
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal ling (DSC) 45 5.5 Distress Calls For a Distress Call transmission , the Ray54E takes the position and time information fr om the input NMEA data along with your MMSI and converts it into a digital “packet ”.
46 Ray54E VHF Radio Note: To conform with regulati ons of the Basel Agreement f or radiotele- phone service on inland waterwa ys, DSC functions are disabled when ATI S is active. See ATIS Function on page 79. Undesignated (Quick) Distress Call 1. Press and hold the red DISTRESS key for 3 seconds to initiate the call.

D ur- ing this time, th e radio beeps, the di splay flashes and a timer counts down 3...2...1. T o cancel the Distr ess Call: release the DISTRESS key before the countdow n has compl eted.
48 Ray54E VHF Radio Cancelling a Distress Call Made in Err or I f you should send a Distress Call in error , you should make an announcement as soon as possibl e that the distress situati on does not exist. 1. Immediately power of f the radio to cancel t he Distress Call.

50 Ray54E VHF Radio 5.6 Position Request W ith this op tion you can request GPS po sition information fr om any station capable of responding to t his type of call an d for which an MMSI number is known. Y ou can specify the target stati on either by sel ecting it from your MMSI phonebook or b y manually entering it s MMSI number .
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective C alling (DSC) 51 5. Rotate the CH knob until the arrow points to th e desired name. If using MANUAL MMSI ID entry: Enter the MMSI number using the CH knob. Ro tate the CH knob to select each character and t h e n p u s h i n t h e CH knob to accept.
52 Ray54E VHF Radio When the Position Request is accepted by the r eceiving station: When the position request is received, the Ray54E shows that the call has been accepted by the requested station. The radio sounds a Call Alert tone. Press any key to mute the alert tone.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal ling (DSC) 53 Receiving a Position Request Fr om Another Station If you receive a position request from another station , how the Ray54E responds depends on the option you have set in the Position Reply menu item (see page 81 ).
54 Ray54E VHF Radio 2. Rota te the CH knob until the arrow poin ts to CALL LOG . 3. Push in the CH knob to select the Call Log. Entry 01 ap pears first with call type and time of the last call. This is the most recen t call. 4. Using the CH knob, scroll down the list of up to 20 entries.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal ling (DSC) 55 Saving an MMSI ID Number from a Call Log Entry Any undefined MMSI number that is li sted on an entry in the Call Log can be saved into the Phonebook. 1. Rotate the CH knob to select the desired Cal l Log entry .
56 Ray54E VHF Radio 5.8 DSC Distress Log The Distress Log is a list of all rece ived DSC Distress Calls by number and time of call. The Log maintains up t o 10 calls. When a DSC Distress Call is rece ived, th e envelope icon blinks on the LCD. The envelope icon disappears wh en the log is opened.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 57 Chapter 6: Menu Settings 6.1 Menu Function The radio’ s setup functions are accessed through the Menu mode. Menu mode selections are as follows. Item Description PHONEBOOK A list of frequently -called DSC stations that you can select for making an Individual Call.
58 Ray54E VHF Radio ➤ T o make Menu selections: 1. Press and hold the CALL/ MENU key to enter Menu mode. The list of available functions appear on the d ot matrix display . 2. Rota te the CH knob to scroll down the l ist until the arrow points to the desired function.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 59 6.2 DSC Phonebook The Phonebook stores up to 20 prep rogrammed MMSI numbers that you can select for making an In dividual Call. The nu mbers are stored by name and contain the station’ s MMSI number . Y ou can add, edit and delete entries from the Phonebook, much as yo u would on a cellular t elephone.
60 Ray54E VHF Radio i. Rotate the CH knob to scroll through the selections. Note: The last sele ction in each field is a left arrow (<), which repre- sents a BACKSPACE. Accepting the arrow returns the current char- acter to its default valu e and moves you back to the previous positi on.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 61 7. When all characters have been selected, press the CH knob to SA VE . The new entry appears in the Phon ebook. Editing an Existing Entry 1. From the Phonebook, rotate the CH kn ob until the arrow on the d ot matrix display points to the ent ry you wish to edit.
62 Ray54E VHF Radio 5. When finished, push the CH knob to SA VE. The revised name appears in the list. Deleting an Existing Entry 1. From the Phonebook, rotate the CH knob until th e arrow on the dot matri x display point s to the entry you wi sh to delete.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 63 6.3 Backlight Adjustment This setting adjusts th e backlight brig htness for the LCD, microph one keypad and main unit keypad. Cho ose from 8 brightness settin gs or OFF . ➤ T o adjust the backlight sett ing: 1. Rotate the CH knob until the arrow points t o BACK LI G HT .
64 Ray54E VHF Radio 6.5 GPS/Time Setup By default, the Ray54E auto-detects NMEA strings and decodes appropriate latitude/longitude p osition and time. If the GPS navigation r eceiver is not connected or is not functional, a manual latitude/l ongitude position and UTC time can be entered and used in the DSC distress tr ansmitted message.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 65 3. Push CH again to accept. The Manual Position scree n appears. 4. Using the CH knob, fill in th e Lat/Lon information, one ch aracter at a time. The first character space is hi ghlighted with a flash ing underline. i. Rotate the CH knob to scroll th rough the selections.
66 Ray54E VHF Radio 6. Push in the CH knob to accept and move onto UTC time. Sel ect the time characters in the same manner . Note: You must enter the TIME parameter in UTC time and not in local time. When time data is entered manually , th e NO GPS indicator remains illuminated and the UTC designator appears foll owing the time.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 67 2. Rotate the CH knob until the arrow points t o GPS/TIME . 3. Push the CH knob to accept. The GPS/T ime screen appears. 4. Rotate the CH knob and scroll down the list to SETTINGS . 5. Push the CH knob to accept. Make your selection from t he options on the list, which are describ ed as follows.
68 Ray54E VHF Radio When manual time is used, it is alwa ys displayed as UTC time, even i f you have entered an of fset. The NO GPS icon remains until v alid GPS information i s availabl e. Note: If TIME DISPL Y is set ON, CO G/SOG is automati cally set to OFF.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 69 6.7 Radio Setup The Radio Setup menu item i s used to determine four separat e settings: • Frequency Band • Channel Name • Ring V olume •K e y B e e p ➤ T o adjust these settings: 1. Press and hold the CALL/MENU key to enter Menu mode.
70 Ray54E VHF Radio Channel (CH) Name By default, the Ray54E lists a descript ive name of up to 12 charact ers in the top line of the dot mat rix display for each chan nel. This option mod ifies the name for the currently-selected channel from its default.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 71 6.8 DSC Setup The DSC Setup menu item is used to determ ine these six fu nctions: • the radi o’ s MMSI ID n umber • the radi o’ s Grou p MMSI ID num ber • the rad.
72 Ray54E VHF Radio My MMSI ID This operation stores the MMSI number required for DSC communications. If you try to access a DSC functio n before entering the MMSI number , an error message appear s and you are prompted to ent er the MMSI ID.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 73 4. When all digits are selected, press and hold the CH knob to accept. 5. Re-enter all nine MMSI digits. 6. When compl ete, pr ess and hold the CH knob to accept. 7. Press the CH knob one last time to save the MMSI ID number .
74 Ray54E VHF Radio Adding a New Group 1. From the DSC SETUP menu item d escribed on page 7 1 , rotate t he CH knob until the arrow points to GROUP SETUP . 2. Press the CH knob to accept. If an existing Group name and MMSI ID number are already stored, those va lues appear .
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 75 6. Contin ue this pro cess until al l GROUP NAME characters have been entered. Press and hold the CH knob to accept the name and move on to the GROUP ID . 7. Use the same procedure to enter the GROUP ID numbers. 8. Press and hold the CH knob to accep t.
76 Ray54E VHF Radio Editing an Existing Entry 1. From the DSC SETUP menu item de scribed on page 7 1 , rotate t he CH knob until the arrow points to GROUP SETUP . 2. Press the CH knob to accept. 3. Rota te the CH knob until the arrow points to the group location you wish to edit.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 77 6. Make your changes, usin g the CH k nob using the same techni que described in Adding an Entr y on page 59. . 7. Press and hold the CH knob to accept y our changes. 8. Press the CH knob to save. The revised entry appears i n the list.
78 Ray54E VHF Radio ➤ T o enter or view th e A TIS ID number: 1. From the DSC SETUP menu item de scribed on page 7 1 , rotate t he CH knob until the arrow points to MY A TIS ID . 2. Press the CH knob to accept. If an existing A T IS ID is stored, the values appear .
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 79 4. When co mplete, p ress and hold the CH knob to accept. 5. Re-enter all nine A TIS digits. 6. When compl ete, pr ess and hold the CH knob to accept.
80 Ray54E VHF Radio When A TIS is enabled, the following occurs: • DSC functions are disab led. • Dual W atch, T ri W atch and all Scan functions are disabled. • The following International Ch annels are limited t o 1 watt outp ut power: 6, 8, 10, 1 1, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 71, 72, 74, 75, 76, 77 (and 3 1, if enabled).
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 81 Position Reply This option enables you to determine how your radio responds t o a request for your GPS position i nformation (lat/lo n) from another station. ➤ T o enable/disable Position Reply : 1. From the DSC SETUP m enu item d escribed on page 71 , rotate the CH knob until the arrow poin ts to POS REPL Y .
82 Ray54E VHF Radio Automatic Channel Changing for Incoming Calls For incoming Distress and All Ships Ur gency Calls, thi s option determines whether your radio automatically switches to Priority Channel 16 to receive the call or prompts y ou to manually accept or decline the channel change.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 83 Pr ocedure When Disabled If you accept DISABLE , on receipt of a Distress or All Ships Ur gency Call you are presented with brief details of th e call an d advised that a chan ge to channel 16 has been requested.
84 Ray54E VHF Radio 6.9 Resetting Factory Defaults This feature returns all radio settings to their facto ry defaults, including BA CKLIGHT , CONTRAST , RING VOLUME , KEY BEEP and manual GPS/TI ME settings . MY MMSI ID number , MY AT IS ID number , CH NAME and the PHONEBOOK are not affected.
