24 chapter 2 Playing DVDs Regional Coding Both the DVD play er and the discs are coded by region. These regional codes must match in order for the disc to play . If the codes don ’ t match, the disc won ’ t play . This player ’ s code is region 1.
chapter 2 25 Playing DVDs T o Load and Play a Disc T urn on the TV and your D VD player (press ON • OFF on the play er or the remote control). Tip Many discs skip the disc menu and start playing automatically . T o access the disc menu when you’re playing a disc, press MENU on the remote.

40 chapter 4 Playing V ideo CDs What is a Video CD? Like DVD video discs, Video CDs contain picture and sound content. Video CDs (VCDs) are encoded in a different format. VCDs don ’ t hold as much information as D VD discs and the picture quality is not as high.
