Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable.
Getting star ted 13 Charg ing with the charger Connect the USB cable to the USB pow er adaptor and then plug the end of the USB cable into the multipurpose jack . Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device . Any damage caused by misuse is not co ver ed by the warranty .
Getting star ted 14 After fully charging , disconnect the device from the charger . F irst unplug the charger from the device , and then unplug it from the electric socket. Do not remov e the batter y before r emoving the charger . This may damage the device .
Getting star ted 15 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 64 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 16 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Mo re → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Pull out the memory card.
Getting star ted 17 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 18 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .
Getting star ted 19 Setting T alkBack This device f eatures T alkBack, which is especially designed for the visually impair ed. With T alkBack, the device can read aloud inf ormation, such as messages and notifications, and provide v oice feedback about your selections.
Getting star ted 20 U sing the touch scr een with Explore b y touch With the Explor e by touch featur e, you can use the touch scr een by touching and listening . Selec ting an item When you dr ag your finger ar ound the screen, the device r eads content or the name of the item under your finger .
Getting star ted 21 Reading cont ent in small units By default, the device reads an en tire section of text at once. Y ou can set the devic e to read text in smaller units, such as wor ds or individual charac ters . Selec t some text to read in units .
22 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 23 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices .
Basics 24 T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options. Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 25 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 26 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Motions and gestures → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right.
Basics 27 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback, or mute the FM radio (when using the speaker).
Basics 28 P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Motions and gestures → P alm motion , and then drag the P alm motion switch to the right.
Basics 29 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 30 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.

Basics 32 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 33 T ap the widgets panel area at the upper part of the screen. Scroll right to the last page , tap , and then select a widget to add to the locked screen. Basics 38 C opying and pasting T ap and hold ov er text, drag or to select more or less text, and then tap Cop y to cop y or Cut to cut. The selected text is copied to the clipboard. T o paste it in to a text entr y field, tap and hold a t the point where it should be inserted, and then tap P aste .
Basics 39 F orgetting W i-Fi net w orks Any network that has ev er been used, including the current network, can be forgott en so the device will not automatically c onnec t to it.
Basics 40 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 41 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 42 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.
Basics 43 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
44 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 45 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 46 • Menu button → T ransfer : Connect the first par ty to the second par ty . This disconnects you fr om the con versation. • Menu button → Manage confer ence call : Hav e a private con versation with one par ty during a multipar ty call or disconnec t one par ty form the multipar ty call.
Communication 47 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag to the right. If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When a second call comes in, end or hold the first call. Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag t o the left.
Communication 48 V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap . During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.
Communication 49 Sw apping images Drag an image of either par ty onto the other par ty ’ s image to swap the images . Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad , and then follow the instructions from your service provider .
Communication 50 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter con tac t information.
Communication 51 Searching f or con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Use one of the f ollowing search methods: • Scroll up or down the con tacts list. • Use the index at the right side of the c ontacts list for quick scrolling , by dragging a finger along it.

Communication 56 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 57 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter r ecipients, a subject, and a message, and then tap . Pr ess the M enu button, and then tap Attach picture to attach images . Pr ess the M enu button, and then tap Attach video to attach videos .
Communication 58 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, pr ess the M enu button, tap Change labels , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 59 G+ Photos Use this application to shar e images or videos via G oogle ’ s social network ser vice. T ap G+ Photos on the Applications screen.

W eb & network 61 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , press the Menu button, and then tap Clear history . Sav ed pages T o view sa ved webpages , tap → Saved pages .
W eb & network 62 Book marks T o bookmark the current webpage , press the Menu button, tap , enter details , such as name and web addr ess, and then tap S ave . T o open a bookmarked webpage, pr ess the Menu button, tap Book marks , and then select one.
W eb & network 63 T o activate Bluetooth, on the A pplications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth , and then drag the Bluetooth switch to the right. P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed.
W eb & network 64 On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Screen Mirroring , and then drag the Screen Mirroring switch to the right. Select a device, open or pla y a file, and then contr ol the display with the keys on y our device.
W eb & network 65 Crea ting a group f or Group Pla y When you cr eate a Group Pla y session, other devices can join the session and share the content . When you use a passw ord for a Gr oup Play session, other devices must en ter the passwor d to join the session.
W eb & network 66 NFC Y our device allows you t o read near field communication (NFC) tags that contain inf ormation about products. Y ou can also use this f eature t o make payments and buy tickets f or transpor tation or ev ents after downloading the requir ed applications.
W eb & network 67 S Beam Use this f eature t o send data, such as videos, images , and documents. Do not send copyright-pr otec ted data via S Beam. Doing so may violat e copyright laws . Samsung is not responsible for an y liabilities caused by the illegal use of copyright ed data.

Media 69 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , press the Menu button, and then tap Settings → Smar t volume . When Smar t volume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 70 Pla ying music by mood Play music g rouped by mood . The playlist is automatically cr eated by the device . T o use this featur e, set the music square menu to appear a t the top of the music library by pressing the Menu button, and then tapping Settings → Music menu → Music square → Done .
Media 71 T ak ing photos T ak ing a photo T ap the image on the preview scr een where the camera should focus . When the subject is in focus , the focus frame turns green. T ap or press the Camer a button to take the photo . Indicates which shooting mode is in use.
Media 72 • P anorama : T ake a photo composed of man y photos strung together . T o get the best shot, f ollow these tips. – Move the camera slo wly in one direc tion.
Media 73 T ak ing videos T ak ing a video T ap t o take a video . T o pause r ecording, tap . T o stop r ecording, tap . Recor ding mode T ap → to change the rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for MMS : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via messag ing.
Media 74 Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out . • Spread two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, and pinch to z oom out. The zoom in/out eff ec t is available when using the z oom featur e while shooting video .
Media 75 • GPS tag : Attach a GPS location tag t o the photo . • T o impr ove GPS sig nals, avoid shooting in locations wher e the signal may be obstructed, such as between buildings or in low-lying ar eas, or in poor weather conditions. • Y our location may appear on your photos when y ou upload them to the I nternet.

Utilities 87 V iewing a memo T ap the memo thumbnail to open it. Scroll left or right to see mor e memos. Pr ess the M enu button and use the f ollowing: • Delete : Delete the memo . • Colour : Change the background c olour . • Lock : Lock the memo so tha t others cannot view it.
Utilities 88 T o add an ev ent or task more briefly , tap a date to select it and tap it again. Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place.
Utilities 89 Changing calendar type Selec t one from among diff erent types of calendars including year , month, week, and others at the right side of the screen.

I t is especially useful for picking out small sections of content, such as posts, r eceipts, or business cards . Settings 105 Setting Network notification The device can det ect open Wi-F i networks and display an icon on the sta tus bar to notify when available . On the Settings screen, tap Connections → Wi - Fi , press the Menu button, and then tap Adv anced and tick Network notification to activate this f eature .
