1 Preface Thank you for purchasing the Barc ode Printer , MB400i/410i.This manual is created so that a fir st-time user of MB400i/MB410i can learn its basic operations in a short time. Please read this manual car efully to make full use of the functions of MB400i/MB410i.

3 1. Safety Precautions In this section, safety precautions about printer o peration are explained to ensure proper care and usage. Make sure to read these carefully be fore using your printer .
4 S pecific W arnings Liquid Foreign Matter A circle with a diagonal line indicates something you should not do. The symbol on the left indicates that you should not try to take the unit apart. A black circle with a picture inside indicates something you need to do.

6 Battery Pack W arning AC Adaptor / Battery Charger (Option) • Never try to take apart the battery pack or modify it in any way such as with a solder iron. • Never expose the batter y to direct f lame, throw it into fire, or take any actions that may lead to shorting.
7 W arning S pecific Cautions Location Never use the battery charger with any other battery pack except for the specified on e. Doing so can rupture the batte ry , cause leak- age, fire or electric shock. • Never cut, damage o r modify the power cord.
8 Power Thermal Head an d Stepping Motor • Do not use wet hands to operate the power switch, replace the battery pack or unplug the AC adapter or battery charger . D oing so cre- ates the danger of electric shock. • The AC adapter set pr ovided for this printe r is specific to this prin ter .
9 T ear-o ff Bar Replacing th e Battery Pack This part contains a blade. T ake care to avoid being injured by the blade and othe r sharp part s in the printer . • Use only the specified batte ry pack. • When replacing the battery pack, make sure to install the p ack in t he correct orientation.
10 Leaving the p rinter unused f or a long time Maintenance and Clean ing Precautions in Use Do not place the p rinter in a hot or cold plac e. The operation temperature range is 5° F to 122° F (-15°C to 50°C) (for wireless LAN: 32° F to 122° F (0 to 50°C) where h umidity does not cause condensation.
11 Do not disas semble or modify th e printer . The printer has high-pr ecision co mpon ents inside requiring fine adjust- ment. Do not disassemble th e printer .

17 4. Prep aring for First-time Operation Charging the Battery Pack Charging by in st alling the battery p ack in the battery charg er (optional) Install the battery p ack in the battery charger (optional) and charge it. 1. Connect the power cord to the charger unit, then plug it into the outlet.
18 2. Insert the battery pack into the slot, with the terminal pointing dow n- ward. When charging begins, the CHARGE lamp (red) lights. When charging is complete, the CHARGE lamp ligh ts green (fully charged). 3. Remove the battery pack when charging is complete.
19 Charging by in st alling the specialized AC ad apter (optional) on the printer This charges the battery pack while it is installed in the printer . 1. Remove the DC input terminal cover , a nd insert the DC o utput terminal. 2. Plug the AC adapter into the outlet.
20 Inst alling and Removing the Battery Pack 1. Open the battery cover . 2. While pressing the gray hook, insert the battery pack, then close the battery cover . Insert the battery pack with the terminal Handle side toward the printer . 3. T o remove the battery , pre ss the gray hook to unlock it, then hold the handle and pull out the battery .
21 Notes: • Be sure to turn the power off before removing or replacing th e battery pack. When the power is off, the ST A TUS LED turns off (see Power OFF in the section, T urning the Power On). Do not remove the bat- tery pack until this light turns of f.
22 Install the specialized AC adapter (optional) on the printer for use. The label installation method dif fers by printing mode. 1. Remove the DC input terminal cover , a nd insert the DC o utput terminal into the input terminal. 2. Connect the AC adapter to the outlet.
23 Loading Labels The label installation method dif fers by p rinting mode. Continuous Pr inting Mode See the printers in the figure under the he ader , Operation Modes, in chap- ter 14, Reference. The figure below shows how labels come out of the printer in continuous mode.
24 1. Slide the cover rele ase lever in the arrow dir ection to open the cover . F irst, slide the dispenser uni t to the continuous p rinting mode posi- tion. (See Switching from Dispense mode printing to Continuous pr inting mode, in this section, Preparing for First-time Operation.
25 3. Load the paper in the printer . Make sure the roll is o riented correctly . 4. Confirm that the label roll can be rotated easily by hand. If rotation is labored, this can cause a feed error . Remove the label roll and adjust the label guide. Note that the label guides do not require adjustment when you are using labels with t he same width.
26 Dispense mode printing See the printers in the figure under the header Operation Modes, in chap- ter 14, Reference. The figure below shows how labels come out of the printer in dispense mode.
27 1. Slide the cover rele ase lever in the arrow dir ection to open the cover . First, slide the dispenser unit to t he continuous printing mode position. (See Switching from Dispense mode prin ting to C ontinuous printing mode, in this section, Preparing for first-time operation.
28 3. Peel the label at the tip of the label paper . This step is unneccessary when y ou are using linerless labels. 4. Load the paper in the printer .
29 5. Confirm that the label roll can be rotated easily by hand. If rotation is labored, this can cause a feed erro r . Remove the lab el roll and adjust the label guide. Note that the label guides do not require adjust ment when using labels with the same width.
30 7. For linerless labels with perfor ati on, pull the label upwa rd to tear along the perforated line. Ensure that the tear- of f edge is just at the beginning of the red platen roller . Otherwise, re-load the label. 8. Slide the dispenser unit until it stops.
31 5. T urning the Pow er On When the preparation steps are complete, turn the power on or off. Power ON 1. Hold down the POWER button until the ST A TUS LED lights green. Then release the POWER button. Power OFF 2. Hold down the POWER button again, until th e ST A T US LED turns off.
32 6. T est Printing 1. When pressing the FEED button and ho lding down the POWER button simultaneously , th e printer enters the test mode. Press the FEED button again to start test printing. 2. V erify the following using the output of the test print.
33 7. Operation with an RS-232C Cable T o print with an optional RS-232C cable connected to a PC or a handheld terminal, perform the following operations. 1. Remove the USB/DIP switch cover , and set the DIP switch (DSW) to DSW -1, 2, 3, 4 = (OF F , OF F , OFF , OFF ).
34 8. Operation w ith a USB C able T o print with an optional USB cable (mini B type) connected to a PC or a handheld terminal, perform the f ollowing operations. 1. Remove the USB/DIP switch cover , and set the DIP switch (DSW) to DSW - 1, 2, 3, 4 = (ON, ON, OF F , OF F).
35 2. Insert the USB cable in the connector . Match the arrow on the USB cab le connector with the arrow besid e the printer connector , a nd insert it firmly . 3. Connect the other en d of the USB cable to the connector on the PC or the handheld termin al.
36 9. Operation via Infrared Communica- tion T o print using a Bluetooth interface or a w ireless LAN interface, perform the following operations. 1. Remove the USB/DIP switch cover , and set the DIP switch (DSW) to DSW -1, 2, 3, 4 = ( ON, OFF , OFF , OFF).
37 3. Adjust the printer positio n so that the PC or handheld ter minal is within a 30° area vertically and horizontally (cone shape) from the center of the infr ared c ommuni cati on sens or . The maximum usa ge dist ance fo r infrared commu nication is 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm).
38 10. Operation with B luetooth or Wire- less LAN T o print using a Bluetooth interface or a w ireless LAN interface, perform the following operations. 1. Remove the USB/DIP switch cover , and set the DIP switch (DSW) to DSW -1, 2, 3, 4 = (OF F , ON, OF F , OFF ).

40 When the next labe l is not printed 1. With the printer online, press the PRINT button to take the printer of fline (ST A TUS LED turns off). 2. Press the FEED button to feed the lab els. 3. When the paper stop s, pull it in the direction of the arrow to cut the label.
41 12. T roubleshooting The status of this printer is indicated by the ST A TUS LED display and a buzzer sound. When the ST A TUS LED di splay or buzzer indicates the sta- tus as described in the table that follows, the printer is in an abn ormal condition.

44 When printing fails (automatic printing) In direct sunlight or under illuminati on, the internal s ensors may mis-oper- ate (assuming a la bel is present in the disp enser unit), and prevent print- ing. In such malfunction, either shie ld the dispenser unit from harsh ligh t, or operate using one of the following method s.

46 13. Daily Care Be sure to turn the power off and remove the b attery pack before perform- ing the following op erations. Caring for the thermal head 1. Slide the cover rele ase lever to open the cover . When in dispense mode prin ting, first slide the dispenser unit to the con- tinuous printing m ode position.

48 14. Reference Included Items Shoulder belt This belt allows you to carry the printe r on your shoulder . 1. Thread the shoulder belt through th e belt holes on th e printer , from the outside to the inside. 2. Thread the end of the shoulder b elt through the buckle, and adjust the length.
49 Battery charger (sin gle) This charges a single battery pack. AC adapter for pr inter Use this to supply power from a household power outlet (AC100V or 240V). Connect the DC output terminal of the AC adapter to the prin ter . • Be sure to use the specified adapter .
50 Case with rain-resistant cover Y ou can buy a W aist case or a case that hangs from the sho ulder . The shoulder case is a ve rsion of the W a ist case that has a rain-resistant cover . Y ou can use these cases only with the model witho ut the rubb er boot.
51 4. Affix the rain-resist ant cover to t he W aist case with the buttons and set in place. 5. Attach the shoulder strap to the case. W aist case - Does n ot fit over rubb er boot This protective case is for carrying the printer by attaching it to your belt.
52 2. Place the lowe r side in the case so that the printer is completely in the case. 3. Close the W aist case cover . 4. Run a belt through th e W aist case loops. RS-232C cable This connects with a PC or handheld terminal. USB cable This connects with a PC or handheld terminal.
53 Operation Modes There are two printer operation modes: continuous printing mode, and dis- pense mode printing. T est printing and online printing are available in both modes. Use the printer se tting tool to set di spense mode printing (linerless labels with perforation).
54 Normal operation m ode The LED display for the no rmal operation mode is as follows. When the buzzer sound mode is enabled, the bu zzer sounds upon startup. The battery life indicator remains on even when the printer is OFFLI NE. Power saving mode 1.
