1 - 1 CHA PTER 1 USER NOTES In this chapter, i mportant notes for users ar e giv en. Please read them carefully before using the OFL-12. 1.1 PRECA UTIONS FOR USING THE OFL-12 To protect the OFL-12 and use i t correctly , please pay attention to the followi ng notes: Do not leav e the OFL-12 outdoors, or wher e water might damag e it.
1 - 2 1.3 PRECA UTIONS FOR USING POLISHING FLUID Please pay attenti on to the following when usi ng the polishi ng fluid: If you get the poli shing fluid on y our skin or into your eyes, rinse with water quickly and thoroughly. Make sure the area w here the polishing fluid is being used is w ell ventilated.
2 - 1 CHA PTER 2 OVERVIEW In this chapter, the parts of the OFL-12 basi c machine and operational procedure are ex plained. In section 2.1, the names of the parts of the OFL-12 basic machine and their function are expl ained. In section 2.2, the standard operati ng procedure for poli shing the ferrul es is explai ned.
2 - 2 2.1 PA RTS NOMENCLA TURE The parts of the OFL-12 basic machine are ex plained in this section. Figur e 2-1 shows the OFL-12 after the polishing disks hav e been installed on the machine.
2 - 3 Power switch Switches the pow er ON/OFF. ON button (gr een) W hen this button is pressed, the polishing disk begi ns to rotate. W hen the time limit ex pires as set by the timer, the poli shing disk stops r otating.
2 - 4 11) W eight arm Provi des the correct poli shing pressur e to the ferrule tips. There are three setting positi ons for the weig ht on each arm. 12) Thr ust pin Applies the polis hing pressur e to the center of the holding ji g so that a hig h level of polishing can be obtained.
2 - 5 Protection Cover Protection cov ers ar e provi ded wi th this machine to pr event operator from touching the mov ing par ts. Open the covers with the knobs. Each cov ers are fix ed wi th magnets w hen they are cl osed. W hen the cover is open, the machine does not oper ate if the switch i s turned on.
2 - 6 2.2 OPERA TIONA L PROCEDURE The standard operating procedure for pol ishing the ferrules i s shown below . 2 - 7 (1) It is best to use only a smal l amount of adhesive on the tip of the ferrule. If too much is used, sometimes it cannot be r emoved wi thin the standard 30 seconds of hand polishing used to r emove the adhesiv e.

3 - 1 CHA PTER 3 POLISHING PREPA RATION In this chapter, all the preparations pr ior to starting polishi ng are ex plained. 3.1 POLISHING DISK PREPA RATION Step 1 Disconnect the pow er cord from the outlet. Step 2 Apply grease incl uded in the product to the underside of the polishing disk.
3 - 2 Air Air Polishing disk Rubber disk Polishing film Colored label 3.2 POLISHING FILM PREPA RATION Step 1 Clean the rubber surface of the polishing disk usi ng cleaning paper and ethy l alcohol. Be sure to rem ove all dirt and other foreig n matter.
3 - 3 3.3 THRUST (POLISHING PRESSURE) SETTING The polishing pressure (t hrust) is set accor ding to the poli shing step and the number of ferrules mounted in the holdi ng jig . The polis hing pr essure is set by moving the wei ght on the w eight ar m.

4 - 2 CA UTION Make sure that the ferrules do not mov e after clampi ng them in the holding jig. Step 5 Separate the fibers i nto two bundles, one on each half of the holding j ig, and tie each bundle wi th a wi re tie.

4 - 7 NOTE Make sur e that the weig ht arm lever goes to the full up position. If it does not, the correct polishin g pressure will no t be applied to the holdi ng ji g and polishin g w ill not b e perf orm ed correctly. NOTE Take care not to pinch your hand with the w eight w hen you attach or detach the holding jig to or from the machine.

4 - 11 NOTE Make sur e that the weig ht arm lever goes to the full up position. If it does not, the correct polishin g pressure will no t be applied to the holdi ng ji g and polishin g w ill not b e perf orm ed correctly. Step 6 Set the timer to 1 min.
4 - 12 Hold ing j ig Wa te r Ferrule ti p Soft brus h NOTE W hen removing the holding jig from the polishi ng unit, li ft the holding jig up so the ferrules do not touch the polishing film. Step 9 Clean the holdi ng jig and the tips of the f errules under running w ater using the br ush.
4 - 13 4.6 POLISHING CONDITION CHECK Check the condition of the ferrule tips after poli shing. If there w as a deep scratch caused in the fiber during the adhesive r emoval step, sati sfactory polis hing cannot be obtained.
