2 The Basics This chapter provides general infor mation about the functions of the keys , inser ting and removing data cartridg es and entering data (connecting the EKP-III to pow er and using the antenna are described in Chapter 15). 2.1 THE KEYBOARD The EKP-III has 12 keys , which access and control features .
The Near key Displays a list of the 20 nearest objects relativ e to fix position or cursor position if no fix is av ailable. The Esc key R ejects an action, closes a window or activ ates Home or Auto Zoom mode. The Enter key Selects the desired option or confir ms selection.

3 The Moving Maps The Moving Ma p is the def ault state of the software . T his mode displays the Mo ving Map screen and Da ta Window . T he Moving Ma p displa ys map detail in Home ,A uto Zoom or Cur sor mode. T he operation mode will deter mine the options av ailable within the screen.
3.1.2 HOME (SCREEN AMPLIFIER) MODE The Home mode (also called Screen Amplifier) is used to keep the fix position within the vis- ible map . T he map is scrolled and redrawn automatically as y our position mov es . W hen this mode is activ e the cursor is hidden.
The Mo ving Ma p screen provides the option for a Da ta Window display for a user defined nav- ig ation infor mation panel. T his window is fix ed at the top of the screen. During Cur sor mode, an additional line is displayed at the bottom of this box with details on the cursor position.

7 The Global P ositioning System The Global P ositioning System (GPS ) is a constella tion of satellites that orbit the ear th twice a day , transmitting precise time and positioning infor mation to anywhere on the globe, 24 hours a day . The system was designed and deployed b y the U .

12 Simulator The built-in Simulator function allows y ou to become proficient in the use of the EKP-III before ev er taking it into the cockpit. No cur rent position fix is required because the EKP-III simulates position data inter nally . T he EKP-III simulates flight in two w ays: a straight f light path or following a selected route .
12.2 SIMULA TING ROUTE MODE T o Simulate the flight of an existing F light Plan, be sure the f light is the “Viewed” Flight Plan (see P ar . 6.1) T hen enter the Simulator Menu and select the parameters of “Speed” and “Flight Plan Mode”. >‘MENU’ 1 sec.

14 The System set-up Menu The System Setup Menu allows the user to c hang e ho w the EKP-III displa ys infor mation. System Setup options are ar rang ed in sub-menus . F or example, all options that relate to the Fix functions are in Fix Setup sub-menu and all options related to time or date are in Date Time Setup .
14.1 GENER AL SET -UP The General Setup sub-menu controls the EKP-III settings . >‘MENU’ 1 sec.+ “SY STEM SETUP” + ‘ENTER’ + “GENERAL SETUP” + ‘ENTER’ 14.1.1 Beeper The EKP-III makes a beep with each key press , war ning or alar m message.

14.2.5 COURSE PREDICTOR The EKP-III will display a line with a circle at the end to indicate the position your aircraft will reach at the set time , based on cur rent direction of tra v el and speed. This is continuously updated to account for changes .
After pressing ‘ENTER’ a box will appear with 00. Using the cursor keys select the number desired and press ‘ENTER’. The def ault setting is Off (00).
14.3.6 CLEAR EVENT LOG Clears the Ev ent Log memor y and star ts new: >‘MENU’ 1 sec . + “SY STEM SETUP” + ‘ENTER’ + “ALARM SETUP” + ‘ENTER’ + “CLEAR EVENT LOG” + ‘ENTER’ After pressing ‘ENTER’ a window appears: press ‘ENTER’ to confir m deletion (or ‘ESC’ to abor t function).
14.4.4 REMAINING TR A CK The remaining track memor y is displayed on the T rack Setup Men u pag e . T he n umber dis- played will be points , time, or distance based on the recording ste p selection. 14.5 UNITS SET -UP This sub-menu contains the v arious options that define how the EKP-III displa ys units of measurement.
14.5.5 FUEL UNIT Fuel units are used in the Fuel Consumption Calculator . >‘MENU’ 1 sec. + “SY STEM SETUP” + ‘ENTER’ + “UNITS SETUP” + ‘ENTER’ + “FUEL” + ‘ENTER’ Y ou may select Gallons (GAL), Liters (LIT), Kilog rams (K G), P ounds (LB) or British Gallons (BGAL).

15 Operating Requirements The EKP-III must be connected to a 10–35 V DC pow er source and the antenna requires a clear view of the sk y in order to operate . Fig. 15 - Power and I/O Connector NOTE The cable that ends with wires is a vailab le as an optional part.
15.1 EX TERNAL WIRING Exter nal P ower The EKP-III has a detachable pow er cable . After connecting the power cable to the EKP-III via the 7 pin conxall connector , inser t the power cable into the aircraft’ s cig arette lighter or the optional batter y pack.
Use the elastic strap provided to secure the EKP-III to y our leg . P osition the elastic strap around your leg with the long looped strip on top . F asten with the hook and loop closure at each end of the strap . Hold the EKP-III ov er the strap on your leg and lo wer into place .
