5 T O USE THIS PRODUCT CORRECTL Y AS A F ACSIMILE Lithium battery A lithium battery in the machine is used to retain settings and program med information such as auto-dia l numbers (page 66). • When the battery dies, settings and programmed information w ill be lost, so please keep a record of this information.

10 BEFORE USING THE F AX FUNCTION A UDITING MODE Accounts that can transmit faxes ( up to 50) can be established and tra nsmission t ime and other information ca n be tracked for each account. The Acc. Usage List (page 99) can be prin ted out which shows the time used for transmission and page s transmitted by each account.
11 1 ORIGINALS ORIGINALS THA T CAN BE F AXED Original sizes * Long originals Depending on the reso lution setting and the width of the original, there may not be sufficient space in mem or y to hold a long original. When a lon g or iginal cannot be entirely scanned, sele ct a lower resolution setting an d/or shorten the origin a l .
12 PLA CING THE ORIGINAL An original can be placed in the SPF/ RSPF or on the document glass. Use the SPF/RSPF when fa xin g a large number of sheet origina l s. Use the document glass to fax originals that can not be scanned using the SPF/RSPF such as thick or thin sh e et originals, o r books or other boun d originals.
13 1 CHECKING THE SIZE OF A PLA CED ORIGINAL When a standar d-size* original is p laced, th e original size is automatically detected (automatic original det ect ion function) and displayed in t he original display. Make sure that the size has been detected correctly.
14 SELECTING RESOLUTION AND EXPOSURE SETTINGS The resolution and exposure can be adjusted to match the size and darkness of text on the original, or for an original such as a photograph. To change the se ttings, follow the steps below after selecti ng fax mode and placing the original.
15 1 CONVENIENT DIALLING METHODS (A UT O-DIALLING) The fax function includes a co nvenient auto dial feature (Rapid dialling, speed dialling and grou p dialling). By programming freque nt ly dialled numbers, you can call and send fa xes to these locations by means of a sim ple dialling operation (p age 19).
16 2 B ASIC OPERA TIONS This chapte r explains the ba sic procedures fo r sending and receiving faxes. There are three b asic methods for fax tr ansmission: me mory transmission, direct transmission, and manual transmis sion. When memor y transmission is u sed, the documen t is temporarily st ored in memory b efore being transmitted.
17 2 SENDING A F AX B ASIC PR OCEDURE FOR SENDING F AXES 1 Make sure that the machine is in fax mode. The FAX indicator is lit when the machine is in fax mode.
18 BA SIC OPERA TIONS 6 Press the [START] key ( ). • Scanning begins. • If the line is free, the machine will dial the receiving machine and begin transmission as soon as the first page is scanned.
19 B ASIC OPERA TIONS 2 TRANSMISSION BY A UT O-DIALLING (RAPID DIALLING AND GR OUP DIALLING) Fax numbers can be dialled by automati c dialling (Rapid dialling and group dia lling) instead of pr essing the numeric keys. Follow the steps below to send a f ax using an auto dial nu mber.
20 BA SIC OPERA TIONS SEARCHING FOR A PR OGRAMMED DESTINA TION (USING THE [ADDRESS] KEY) At the time of dialling, you can e nt er lett er s to search for a destinat ion stored in a Rapid key, Speed Dial nu mbe r, or Group key. 1 Perform steps 1 to 4 of "BASIC PROCEDURE FOR SEN DING FAXES" (page 17).
21 B ASIC OPERA TIONS 2 F AXING A TW O-SIDED ORIGINAL (MX-M182D/MX-M202D/MX-M232D) Follow the steps below to auto matically transmit both sid es of a two-sided origi nal. (This is only possible on models that have an RSPF installed.) 1 Make sure that the machine is in fax mode.
22 BA SIC OPERA TIONS Transmission settings (memory transmission mode and direct transmission mode) Transmiss ion modes include m emory transmission , where th e original is temporarily scanned int o memory before transmission, and dir ect transmission, where the original is transmitted directly without b eing scanned into memory.
23 B ASIC OPERA TIONS 2 8 Press the [START] key. When using the document glass, multiple original pages cannot be transmitted in a single transmission. Faxing by manual transmission (using the [ SPEAKER] key) 1 Perform steps 1 to 4 of "BASIC PROCEDURE FOR SEN DING FAXES" (page 17).
24 BA SIC OPERA TIONS Quick On-line When you use the SPF /RSPF to send a multi-page docume nt an d there are no previously stored jobs waiting or in progress (and the line is not being used ), the machine dials the destination after the first pa ge is scanned and begins transmitting scanned pages while the remaining pages are being scanned.
25 B ASIC OPERA TIONS 2 CANCELLING A F AX TRANSMISSION To cancel a transmission that is in progress or a st ored transmission jo b, follow the step s below. A transmission in progress or a stored transm ission job is cancelled from the fax status scr een.
26 BA SIC OPERA TIONS Cancelling a stored transmission job If you do not wish to cancel a stored transmission job and only wish to check its status, press the [BACK] key instead of the [C] key in step 4 to exit . 1 Press the [FAX STATUS] key. The fax job sta tus screen is displayed.
27 2 RECEIVING F AXES When another fax machine sends a fax to your machine, your machine w ill ring* , automatically receive the fax, and begin printing.
28 BA SIC OPERA TIONS F-code confidential fax reception When a fax has been received by F-code confidential fax reception, an icon ( ) will appear in the base screen of fax mode (message display (1 ) on page 9). The icon also appears in fr on t of the box in the F-code confide ntial box name screen in the display.
29 B ASIC OPERA TIONS 2 F AX PRINT HOLD FUNCTION Faxes are normally printed as soon as they are received. This funct ion is used to ho ld received faxes in memory rather than printing the m as they are r eceived. Faxes he ld in memory are printed manu ally all at once.
30 BA SIC OPERA TIONS 6 Select "ON" with the [ ] or [ ] key. To disable fax print hold, se lect "OFF". 7 Press the [OK] key. Printing received faxes held in memory To print received faxes that are held in memory wh en fax print hold is enab led, follow the steps below.

33 3 A UT OMA TIC TRANSMISSION A T A SPECIFIED TIME (TIMER TRANSMISSION) This feature enables you to set up a transmission or polling operation to be performed autom atically at a specified time up to a week in advance. This is convenient when you will be out of the office or for transm ission at off-peak nighttime rates.
34 AD V AN CED TR ANSMIS SION METHODS 7 Press the [OK] key. The selected day is se t. 8 Perform the desir ed fax operation. The steps that follow will depend on the type of operation.
35 3 TRANSMISSION AND RECEPTION USING THE POLLING FUNCTION The polling function allows your mach ine to call a fax machine that has a document ready for transmission and initiate reception of th e document.
36 AD V AN CED TR ANSMIS SION METHODS USING THE POLLING FUNCTION When used in conjunction with the ti mer transmission function (page 33 ), only one polling job can be stored. 1 In Fax mode, press the [SPECIAL FUNCTION] key. 39 AD V ANC ED TRANSMISSION METHODS 3 7 Select "1 TIME" or "REPEAT" with the [ ] or [ ] key. If you select "1 TIME", the documen t data is automatically cleare d from memory aft er your machine is polled once. If you sele ct "REPEAT", the document data in mem ory can be use d repeatedly.
40 AD V AN CED TR ANSMIS SION METHODS Deleting documents from the Public Box This procedure is used to delete do cuments from the Public Box when they are no lo nger needed. 1 Follow steps 2 to 6 of "Scanning a document into polli ng memory (the Public Box)" (page 38 ) and then follow the steps below.
41 3 INCLUDING SENDER INFORMA TION ON F AXES This function prin ts the date, time, you r programmed na me, your progr ammed fax number, and the transmitte d page number at the top ce ntre of each page that you fax. All pages that you fa x include this information.
42 F AXING A DIVIDED ORIGINAL (DU AL P A GE SCAN) When faxing a book or other bound document , you can use this function to divide the two ope n pages of the book into two se parate fax pages .
43 3 ADDING A CO VER SHEET/MESSA GE T O A F AX TRANSMISSION This function automatically at taches an A4 (8-1/2" x 11") cover sh eet to your fax tr ansmissions. The cover sheet shows the date and time, th e dest ination n ame, the sender's name a nd fax numbe r, and t he numb er of pag es in the transmission.
44 USING SETTINGS ST ORED AS A PR OGRAM This function allows you to sto re t he steps of an operatio n, including the destinatio n an d scann in g se ttin gs , into a program. This function is co nvenient when you frequ ently send documents, such as a daily report, to th e same destination.
45 3 FOR W ARDING RECEIVED D A T A T O A NETW ORK ADDRESS (INBOUND R OUTING SETTINGS) The received fax data can be automat ically forwarded to a specifi ed e-mail address. When this f un ction is enabled, you can forward the received data to a specified address without printin g it.

49 3 FOR W ARDING RECEIVED F AXES T O ANO THER MA CHINE WHEN PRINTING IS NO T POSSIBLE (FOR W ARDING FUNCTION) When printing is no t possible because of a pa per, toner, or other proble m, you can forward re ceived faxes to another fax machine if t hat mach ine has been appr opriatel y programme d in your ma chine.

52 4 TRANSMISSION USING F-CODES This chapter ex plains F-code transm ission, which gives y ou a convenient mea ns of performing advanced operations such as relay broadcast t ransmission and confidential transm ission. Please read those sec tions that are of in terest to you.
53 TRANSMISSION USING F-CODES 4 When communication occurs involvin g a box, the communication will only take place if the sub-address and passcode that the other machine sends match the sub-ad dress and passcod e programmed in your machine for th at box.
54 F-CODE POLLING MEMOR Y F-code polling memory allows one fax machine to call another fax machine and initiate re ception of a document that has been scanned into the other mach ine's F-code polling memo ry box.
55 TRANSMISSION USING F-CODES 4 USING F-CODE POLLING MEMOR Y In order for ano ther machine to retrie ve a document from your ma ch ine, you must first scan t he d ocument into the F-code polling memory box. You can check the document in the me mory polling box by printing it out.

When the [SPECIAL FUNCTION ] key is pressed, th e special function selection screen appears.
58 TRANSMISSION USING F-CODES 10 Enter a passcode (maxi mum 20 digits) with the numeric keys. • Characters that can be ent ered are numbers, "# ", and spaces. However, the initial cha racter cannot be a space. • If you make a mistake, press the [ C] key and re-enter the correct digit(s) .
59 4 F-CODE CONFIDENTIAL TRANSMISSION F-Code confidential tra nsmissio n provides a secure means of faxing confide ntial documents. The sub-addr ess and passcode programmed in th e box restr ict th e recip ients of the fax, and once received in the box, the fax can only be printed by someone who kno ws the print pas scode.
60 TRANSMISSION USING F-CODES F-code confidential transmission 1 Follow steps 1 to 4 of "BASIC PROCEDURE FOR SEN DING FAXES" (page 17) and then follow the steps below. 2 Press the [SPECIA L FUNCTION] key. When the [SPECIAL FUNCTION ] key is pressed, th e special function selection screen appears.

65 CONVENIENT METHODS OF USE 5 SETTING THE RECEPTION MODE The machine normally receive s faxes automatically after ringing; however, when an extension phone is connect ed, you can set the reception mode to MANUAL. This will allow you to talk to the ot her party first and then receive a fax.

76 PROGRAMMING ST ORING, EDITING AND DELETING PROGRAMS You can store a transmission met hod *, cover sheet/me ssage, transmi ssion settings, dual pag es, and/or resolution/exposure settings in a program. This will allow you to use the settings for a transmis sion by means of a simple operation (see "USI NG A PROGRAM" on page 44).
77 PROGRAMMI NG 6 10 Select the program that you wish to store with the [ ] or [ ] key. • A transmission method, cover sh eet/message, resolution /e xposure settings, dual pa ges, sender's name, and transmission setti ngs can be stored. A transmission method must be stored.
78 PR OGRAMMING, EDITING, AND DELETING F-CODE MEMOR Y BO XES The procedure for programming a box for F-code transmission is explained here. There are three types of F-code boxes: F-code public boxes (page 81), F- code confidential boxes (page 79) , and F-code relay group boxe s (page 80).
79 PROGRAMMI NG 6 [PROGRAMMING AN F-CODE CONFIDENTIAL BOX] Follow the steps below to pr ogram an F-code confidential re ception box. An F-code (sub-address and passcode) for F -cod e con fident ial re ce ption an d a print pass code to print out r eceived faxes ar e programmed in each box.

81 PROGRAMMI NG 6 [PROGRAMMING F-CODE PUBLIC (POLLING MEMORY) BOXES] This setting is used to program a box to sto re document data for r emote transmission when polle d by a machine that supports F-Code commu nication. Up to 10 boxes can b e programmed.
82 PROGRAMMING ● Editing an F-code confidential box 11 Select the name of the F-code confidential box that you wish to edit with the [ ] or [ ] key. If not all letter s of the box name appear , press the key to display all letter s. Press the key once again to return to the origin al screen.

97 SYSTEM SETTINGS 8 ADMINISTRA T OR SETTINGS MENU The system settings are accessed via the f ollowing menu structure. Refer to this menu when en ablin g or disabling the settings th at are explained beginning on pa ge 99. Some settings contain an additional level of setting s (a settings screen).

The program med name and number are printed at the top of each fax page you send. The nu mber is also used as a passcode when performing polling reception "USING THE POLLING FUNCTION" (page 36).
