LOADING THE BA TTERIES The SD9 uses two set s of batteries. Make sure that both set s of batter ies are in place before using the camera. LOADING T HE LITHIUM B A TTERIES （ T w o CR123A or tw o DL123A ; for m echanical operation of the camera ） 1 Be sure that the “D”-dial is set t o the OFF position.
LOADING THE B A TTERIES CR-V3 AA T y p e 2 Insert the batteries as indicated on the batter y compartment. 3 Insert the batter y case into the camera; turn the battery l atch to the opposi te position to lock.
CHECKING THE BA TTER Y ST A TUS When “D”-dial i s set to driv e area (p.14), the battery icon, which shows the cap acity of the battery , is shown on the top LCD panel . The remaining batte ry power of CR123A (DL123A) and CR-V3 (or AA ty pe) is displayed sep arately .
USING A HOME POWER SUPPL Y Y ou can pow er the camera from a w all outlet u s ing the provided AC Adapter - (SAC-1). When u s ing y our camera for an extended period of time or rev iewing the picture s or con necting the camera to a computer , we recommend that y ou operate the camera from a household power outlet.
MOUNTING AND RE MOVING THE LENS The SD9 camera use S A ty pe inside and outsid e bayonet mount ( SA-IB and SA-OB) re spectiv ely . 1 Make sure to turn the “D”- Dial to OFF position (Power Off po sition) 2 Remove the Camer a’s body cap and the lens’ rear cap.
MOUNTING A N D REMOVING THE LENS 4 T o remove the lens, press the lens l ock button and turn the lens c ounter–clock wise until it stops. Gently remove the l ens from t he camera body . C A U TION !! · On the mount surface of the lens , there ar e a number of electric con tacts.
SETTING THE LANGUAGE Camera menus and messages appe aring on the color LCD monitor can be displayed in ei ther English, Jap anese, German or French. Y ou should receiv e the SD9 camera pre-se t to English, how e v er , if ne cessary , you can change the camera languag e yoursel f.
SETTING THE TIME AND DA TE The SD9 camera r ecords the dat e and time when each imag e is captured and stores this information with the image. T o ensure that the correct information is re corded with.
INSERTING AND REMOVING THE CF C A RD The SD9 camera use s CompactFla sh™ (CF) cards to s tore image s. The camera sup port s both T ype I and T y pe II CF cards, includ ing Microdrives. T O INSERT THE CF CARD 1 Set the “D”-Dial to th e OFF p osition.

FORMA TTING THE CF CAR D New CF card s must be formatted before use. Additionally , cards with corrup t or incomp atible file systems may need to be formatted be fore use. T O FORM A T THE CF C A RD 1 Make sure the came ra is turned on . 2 Press the ＜ MEN U ＞ button on the back of the camera to displa y the Camera Set- up Menu.
FILE NUMBERING SYSTEM The images y ou take are automatically assigned file nu mbers from 00001 to 99999. When images are being review ed, the file num ber of each image is displayed in the left corner of the Info S trip (see P. 6 8 ). The file n umber is also incorporated in to the filename of the image.
FILE NUMBERING SYSTEM 4 Press ＜ ＞ arrow or ＜ OK ＞ to open sub-menu. 5 Use ＜ ／ ＞ arrows on the 4- way controller to select num bering system. 6 Press ＜ ＞ arrow or ＜ OK ＞ to apply the setting or ＜ ＞ arrow or ＜ CA NCEL ＞ to close sub-menu without making any cha nges.
FRAME NU MBER COUNTE R This display show s the number o f im ages that can be recorded on the CF-Card. l The number of images that can be rec orded on the CF card is depending on the set tings you choose. For example, in t he illustration on t he left, 32 pictures can be store d on the CF card.
FRAME NUM BER COUNTER l When the camera is occupied with image processing, th e frame number value blinks on the top LCD panel. A cursor will be in motion on th e frame number value to show the progress. l T he shutter will not release when the camera is busy with proc essing.
DIOPTER ADJUST MENT Adjust the v iewfinder diopter so that you can see clearly through the v ie wfinder . W hile looking through the viewfinder , slide th e Diopter Adjuster to th e left or to the right, until the image appears shar p on the focus screen.
HOLDING THE CAMERA T o avoid the camer a shake, which can result in b lurriness of y our photograph, hold the camera steady . ● Firmly grasp the cam era’ s gri p with your right han d. ● Hold the camer a stead y with your left hand an d support th e bottom of t he camera and the lens.
SETTING THE ELECTRONIC S OUND This camera will inform y ou with an El ectronic Sound “Pi-Pi”, w hen the camera confirms focus. It is possi ble to cancel this elec tronic sound, if you desire. 1 Press the “ FUNC ” button 2 times (Pre ss and hold the button at 2 nd time).
SELECTING THE EXPOSURE MODE The features and the operation methods o f four di fferent ex posure modes of the came ra are ex plained below . P PROGRAM AE T o make picture taking easier , the camera w ill automatically select an appropriate combination of shutter speed and aperture v alue, according to brightness o f the su bject.
PR O GR AM AE W hen this mark blinks, s hutter speed may become slow and pi cture can be blurred. In this case, pleas e perform flash photograph y ( P. 6 1 ) or to prevent blurring, please us e a tripod etc . PROGR A M S HIFT Y ou can ch ange the combinati on of shutter speed a nd aperture value, which were selected by the camera, if you desire.
A APERTURE PRIORITY AE After you set the apertur e value you desire, the camera w ill determine the appropriate shutter speed. If you select smaller aper tures, depth of field will be greater . The larger apertur es tend to blur the background, as depth o f field will be shallower .
S SHUTT ER SPEED PRIORITY AE When y ou set the desired sh utter speed, the camera w ill select the appropriate aperture v alue for correct ex posure. Y ou can achieve stop ac tion effe cts by selectin g a fast sh utter speed, or express the feeling o f motion speed for a moving subject by selectin g a slow sh utter speed .
M MANUAL EXPOSURE Set both the shutte r speed and aper ture val ue a ccording to the indi cation of the exposure mete r . Y ou can change the exposure, a s you desire . 1 Set the “D”-Dial to th e “Drive-Area” ( P. 1 4 ). 2 Set the “Mode ”-Selector to the “ M ” position.
BULB SET TING When long time ex posures are require d (for shooting nig ht scenes or v ery dark subject s) the use o f the “Bulb” setting i s recommended. Please use tripod w hen taking pictures wi th this se tting. Bulb p hotography can be performed only w h en ISO se nsitiv ity is set to ISO100.
Adjustment of auto focus and manual focus operation ar e explained below . HOW T O USE AUT O FOCUS It is po ssible to u se Autofocu s function only with AF Lenses. Y our camera is equipped w ith highly preci se AF System and incorporates two di fferent aut ofo cus mo des.
HOW TO USE AUTOFOCUS I n such case s , please use one of the following focus i ng methods. 1. Use the Focus L ock function to focus on anot her subject, which has a simila r focusing distance as your subject. 2. Set the lens to MF mode an d focus manu ally .
FOCUS LOCK If you w ant to ta ke the picture of a su bject, which is out of the focu s detecting area, use fo cus lock function. Thi s functio n can be used only in ( single AF mode) 1 Compose the de sired focusing subject in the center of viewfinder and th en press t he shutter button “Half-way”.
OPERA TION OF THE DRIVE MODE Operation of the self-timer , and ot her function s of the came ra are explained by the follow ing: DRIVE-AR EA Some of the import ant operations and se ttings of the camera can be a ctivate d by the driv e area of the “D”-dial.
CONTINUOUS SH OOTING In this mode, when y ou keep the shutter button fully depressed, the camera will take pi ctures continuously . At the time of continuous shooting the numbe r of frames per sec. is g iven below . HI MED LOW Burst Rate 1.9fp s f or 6frames 2.
SELF TIMER ■ Y ou will hear the electronic sound during “Self-timer” o peration, even if you set th e electronic sound op tion to O FF . ■ If you want to cancel the “Self -timer” opera tion, turn the “D”-dial to another po sition.
This se ction ex plains the applica tion of the more adv anced functions o f your camera, w hen composing the expressions o f your picture. SETTING THE WHITE BAL AN CE （ WB ） The color o f light re flected by an ob ject can v ary depending on the color of the light source illuminating it.
SETTING THE WHIT E BAL A N CE WHITE BALANCE O PTIONS OPTION COLOR T E MP. DESCRIPTION Au t o (Default) Select this setting t o allow the camera to automatically determine the appropriate white balance adjustments. Sunlight Approx. 5400 K Select this setting when taking pictur es in full sunlight.
SETTING THE WHIT E BALANCE SETTI NG A CUST OM WH ITE BALA NCE For more precise control of th e white bal ance setting or when photogra phing under unusual lighting conditions, the " Set Custom WB " option ca n be used t o capture a ample of neutral o bject in a scene to be used for color correct ion.
SETTING THE WHIT E BAL A N CE TI P · W hen a custom white bala nce setting is successfully capt ured, " Custo m " will automaticall y become the selecte d item in the W hite Balance menu.

AE LOCK The camera w ill fix and memorize the exposure value, w hile you press the “A E” Lock button. When you wish to lock the ex posure of a subject o ff-center , AE lock is very useful. Use o f this fun c tion w ith Center Area Metering Mode is recommended.
EXPOSURE COMPENSA TION If you w ant to intentionally overexpose or underex pose the picture, u se this function. W hile pressing the Exposure Compe nsation button, turn the “C”-dial to s et the desire d compensation value. Then, rele ase the Exposure Compensation butt on.
AUT O BR ACKETING This function of the camera let s you t ake a sequence o f pictures of the sa me subject at three different ex posure levels; Appropria te Exposure , Under Exposure and Over Exposure. If it i s di ffi cult to determine the proper exposure, ple as e use th is f unct ion.
A UTO BRA CKET ING For the first frame, “ ” mark will be displayed contin uously on the LCD p anel. For the second fram e, “ ” mark on the LCD panel, will blink sl owly , then it will blink quickly for the third frame. ■ W hen you set the self-timer mode, th e camera will a utomatically take three consecutive pi ctures.
REMOTE C ON TR OL L ER (RS-1 1 AND RS-21) This ac cessory per mit s relea sing the cam era ’ s shutter from up to 16 feet ( 5m) away from in front of the camer a, or up to 9 . 8 fee t (3m) away if y ou are 30 degrees to ei ther side. (Depending o n the lens, there may be some restricti ons when using it from the left side of the camera.

IMAGE INFO SCREEN FOR MAGNIFIE D IMAGES It is possible to obtain det ailed histo gram information for a particular se ction of an image by opening the Image Info Screen from Zoomed-In V iew . · For more informati on on the hist ogram see ne xt section.
HIST OGRAM The histogram i s a graph de picting the di stribution of brightness values in the image for ea ch of the three color channels (Red, Green, and Blue) . The horizont al axis sho ws the bri ghtness lev e l, w ith darker pixels tow ards the lef t side and brighter pix els toward the righ t.
OVER-EXPOSURE W ARNING Highlight areas of a n image where de t ail may be lost d ue to over-exposur e will be indicated by a solid red o verlay when Exposure Warning is set to On in the Camera Set-up Menu. The over-exposure o verlay will be visible in t he all views e xcept for Contact Sheet and Jump Mode.
VIEWING IMAGES ON A TV The SD9 camera can be connected to a television or a videocas sette recorder using the provided video cable, allow ing the record ed images to be view ed on the telev ision monitor or recorded on videotape .
This se ction de scribes how to delete the image( s) recorded on a CF card . Images recorded on the CF card ca n be deleted one at a time or several at once u sing the Delete Menu.
DELETING A SINGLE IMAGE T O DELETE A SINGLE IM A GE 1 Use the ＜ ／ ／ ／ ＞ arrows on the 4-way contr oller to selec t the image to be deleted in Contact Sheet or Single-Image View . 2 Press ＜ DEL ＞ t o display the Delet e Menu. · “Current image” will be the defau lt selection.

RECOVERI NG A DELETED IMAGE One of the unique feat ure s of the S D9 ca mera is the ab ilit y to rec over accidentally deleted images. C AUTION !! · Image recovery m ust take place immedi ately after images ar e deleted, or they may be permanently lost.
Image modification s, such as locking , marking, and rot ating, as well a s automatic image pl ayback, can be performed from the Modification Menu . The Modification Menu cont ains the L ock Menu, Mark M enu, Rota te Menu, and Slideshow Menu. T O D I SPLA Y THE MOD IFICA TION MENU Press the ＜ MOD ＞ button on the back of the camera.
LOCKING IMAGES Locking protect s images from bei ng ac cident ally deleted. Locked images must be unlocked before they can be deleted by the Delete Me nu functions. LOCK MENU MENU ITEM DESCRIPTION Lock/Unlock Lock the currently selected image onl y. If the image is already locked, the menu ite m changes to “Unlock”.

ROT A TING IMAGES Images t aken with a v ertical (portrai t) orien tatio n can be rotated fo r more convenient v iewing on the color LCD monitor or on an a ttached television. T he images’ new orient ation will be used in all view s as well as in the slideshow .
