19 LOADING THE BA TTER Y A lithium-ion battery , BP-31, is pr ovided with the DP1 camera. Char ge the batt ery be fore us ing the came ra f or the first ti me. Ch arge the bat tery by the supplied batte ry charger , BC-31, when the batte ry is empty .
20 LOADING THE BA TTER Y 1 Open the Battery / Card Cover in the dir ectio n of th e arro w , a s sh own in th e instruction. 2 Insert the battery into the chamber in accordance with the diagr am. ● Insert the batt ery unti l it lock s into place. 3 Close the co ver securely .

24 SETTING THE LANGUAGE Y ou should receive the DP1 camera pre-set to English, how ever , if necessary , you can chang e the camera language yourse lf. 1 Remove the lens cap and turn the came ra on. 2 Press the button. 3 T o op en the [ Set Up ] menu, press the button.
25 SETTING THE TIME AND DA TE The DP1 camera records the date and time when ea ch image is ca ptured and stores this information with the image. T o ensure that the correct informatio n is recorded w .
26 TIP • The date can be displayed in one of three formats: M/D/Y (month/day/year), D/M/Y (day/m onth/y ear), or Y/ M/D (year /month/ day). • The camera’s in ternal clock is powered b y a capacitor that receives its charge f rom ca mera’s b attery.

33 INSERTING AND REM OVING THE CARD The DP 1 cam era us es a SD m emory card, SDHC mem ory card and Multimedia card to store da ta. TO INSERT THE CARD 1 T urn of f the camera and open the Batte ry/ Card Cover , as shown in the illustration. 2 Insert the card in accordance with the instruction of Battery/ Card chamber .

35 FORMA TTING THE CARD New cards m ust be for matted b efore us e. In addition , cards wi th corrup t or incomp atible file systems may need to be formatted before use. 1 Remove the lens cap and turn the camera on. 2 Press the button. 3 T o ope n the [ Se t Up ] menu, pre ss the button.
36 SHUTTER BUTT ON The s hutte r button of th e DP1 came ras has two posi tions . When you pr ess the s hutter b utton “ half way down ”, the camera’s aut ofocus system s wil l activate. When pressing the button “all -the-way down”, th e shutter will rele ase to take a pic ture .
37 BASIC OPERA TION SELECTING THE EXPOS URE MODE The feature s and the operation m ethods of the four dif ferent exposure modes of the camera are expla ined below . AUT O MODE This mode allows easy exposu re setting of the camera. It is similar to P mode, but w ith less options.

40 A APERTURE PRIORITY AE After y ou set th e apert ure, t he came ra wil l det ermin e the appr opr iate shutter speed. If you select sma ller apertures, depth of field will be greater . Larger apertures tend to blur the background, as depth of field will be shal lower .
41 S SHUTTER SPEED PRIORITY AE When you set the desired shutter speed, the camera w ill select the appropriate aper ture value for correct ex posure. Y ou can achieve stop action ef fects by sele cting a fast shutter speed, or give the fee ling of motion to a moving subject by selecting a slow shutter speed.
42 M MANUAL EXPOSURE Set both the shutter speed and apertu re value acco rding to the indica tion of the exposu re meter . Y ou can ch ange the exposu re, as you desire. 1 Set the Mode Dial to the M position. (The shutter speed value is illuminated in green.
43 USING THE BUIL T -IN FLASH The cam eras have built-in flash for t aking pictures at night or in low light , whi ch is v ery conv enient. USING THE BUIL T -IN FLASH 1 Ejec t the fl ash by sli ding th e Flas h Pop- Up Lever . 2 Make sure that the Flash Mode icon is displayed o n the color LCD mon itor .
44 FORCE D FLASH When you pop-up the built-in flash, you can use your camera in this mode. • Please use th is mode fo r ordinary photogra phy . RED-EYE R EDUCTION FLASH When taking a picture with flash, someti mes the pe rson’s e yes refle ct s th e flash light and the “ redeye” phenomenon will appear i n the picture.
45 FOCUSING Adjustment of autofocu s and man ual focus opera tion are explained below . HOW T O USE AUT OFOCUS Position the photograph ic subject within the centr e of th e comp osit ion an d pres s the shutte r button “ha lf-way”. • If autofocus is selected, the focusing poi nt will be illumin ated in green.
46 AF AREA SELECTI ON The AF area of the DP1 is equipped with 9 focusing points and it is possib le to select the desired fo cusing point. 1 T o ope n [ Shooting Menu ], press t he button. 2 Use the button to select [ AF Ar ea ] and press the butto n.

49 CONTINUOUS SHOOTING [Cont inuous] In this mode, when you keep the shutte r button full y depressed, the camera will ta ke pictures continuou sly . • The maximum nu mber of frames is three in continuo us mode.
50 ADV ANCED OPERA TION This se ction explai ns the applic ation of the mo re advance d funct ions of your camera, when composing th e expressions of your picture. SETTING THE WHITE BALANCE （ WB ） The color of light reflected b y an object can vary depending on the color of the light source ill umina ting it.

52 SETTING A CUSTO M W HITE BALANCE For more pre cise control of the whit e balance setting or when photograph ing under unusual ligh ting conditions, the " Set C ustom WB " opt ion can b e used to capture a sa mple of neutral o bject in a scene to be used fo r color correction.
53 SETTING THE SENSITIVITY （ ISO EQUIV A LENCY ） The photos ensit ivit y of di gital camer as is described in terms of “ISO equ ivalent” like silver-halide film came ra s. (ISO sensitivity P .104 ) 1 Press the button to open [ Sho oting Menu ].

57 SELECTING THE METERING MODE The c amer a h as th ree adva nced m eteri ng modes. 1 Press the button to open [ Sho oting Menu ]. 2 Use the buttons to select [ Metering Mode ] and press the button.
58 CAUSION!! • Images taken using Spot metering w ill be indicated as Center Metering in the Image Information Window of S IGMA Photo Pro . AE LOCK The camera will fix and m emorize the exposure val ue whilst the “AE” Lo ck butt on is d epress ed.
59 • It is possible to use the button to select settin gs other than AE Lock [ AEL ]. [ Center AF Lock ] Ensure the subjec t is within the center focusing p oint and press the button to a ctivate and lock the autofo cus. Please note, onl y the center focu sing point will be used when the button is pressed.
60 EXPOSURE COMPENSA TION If you want to intentionally o verexpose or underexpo se the picture, use this function. 1 Press the button. ( The exposure compensation valu e is displayed in green in the lower right of the color LCD monitor . 2 Select the desire d compensation value by usin g the buttons.
61 AUT O BRACKETING This function of the camera lets you take a sequence of pi ctures of the sam e subjec t at thr ee differen t expos ure lev els; App ropr iate E xposur e, Under Exposure and Over Exposure. If it is dif ficult to determine the p roper exposure, plea se use this fun ction.
62 TIP • Three frames will be taken continuou sly by pressing the shutter button. When t he Drive M ode is set to the Self Timer , only 1 frame will be taken each time the shutter button is pressed. • If the [ Quick Pre view ] in t he [ Set Up ] m en u is set to other than [ Off ], three ima ges can be viewed at a time.
63 COLOR SETTING S In addition to st andard color setting s of the DP1, it is a lso possible to sele ct Sepia and Monochrome (B&W) photograp hy modes. 1 Press the button to open [ Sho oting Menu ]. 2 Use the buttons to select [ Color S ettings ] and press the button.
64 DIGIT AL ZOOM The DP1 camer a is equi pped wi th a digi tal zoom func tion. TO SET DIGIT AL ZOOM 1 Press the button to open [ Shooting M enu ]. 2 Use the buttons to select [ Digi tal Zoom ] and press the button. 3 Select [ On ] by u sing the buttons.
65 IMAGE WITH SOUND It is possible to r ecord sound for up to 10 seconds af ter taking a pictu re. This function is convenien t for recording shooting information at the time of ta king the photograph . SETTIN G THE IMAGE WITH S OUND 1 Press the button to select [ Shooting Menu ].
66 WARNING !! • Once Image with sound is set, the camera will continu e to hold this setting unti l [ Off ] is slected in step 3 . TIP • The sou nd recording will be stored as a WAV file . It will be stored in the same fo lder and ha ve the same file name a s the image file.
67 REVIEWING AND DELETING IMAGES This se ction explains h ow to review and delete image s after they have been captu red. TIP • The DP1 may not be able to displa y images captured by other cameras, or “DP1 ” imag es that h ave been renam ed or m oved from the DCIM folder on the ca rd.

77 HISTOGRAM The histogram is a graph depictin g the di stribution of brightness values in the image for each of the three color channels (Red, Green , and Blue). The horizonta l axis shows th e brightness leve l, with darke r pixels towards the left side and brighter pixels towa rd the right.
78 VIEWING IMAGES ON A TV The DP1 camera can be connecte d to a television or a video device using the provide d A V cable, al lowing the recorded images to be viewed on the television m onitor or reco rded on vi deo recording medi a.
