15 BASIC OPERA TION AND QUICK REFERENCE The SD14 camera has many adva nced features. T his section, describes basic camera operation. Y o u can find more details in later sections. Charging the battery (P .19) Charge the supplied lithium io n battery with the provide d battery charger .

19 LOADING THE BA TTER Y A lithium ion batte ry BP-21 is provided with the SD14 camera. Charge th e battery , before using the camera firs t time. Please charge the batter y by the su pplied battery cha rger BC-21 , when no ch arge remains. T o Charge the battery 1 Connect the po wer cable to the cha rger and insert the plug into the wall o utlet.

22 CHECKING THE BA TTER Y ST A TUS When “D”-dial is set to dri ve area ( p.1 4 ), the batte ry icon, which shows the capacity of the batter y , is shown on th e top LCD panel. Explanations of the sym bols are gi ven a s foll ows. POWER SA VING T o conserve the battery , the camera has several po wer-saving features.
23 USING A HOME POWER SUPPL Y (Sold Sep arat ely) Y ou can p ower the camera from a wall ou tlet using the provided AC Adapter - (SAC-2). Wh en using your camera for an extended period of time, review.
24 MOUNTING AND REMOVING THE LENS 1 Make su re to tu rn the “D”-Di al to position (Power Off positi on) 2 Remove the ca mera bod y cap and th e rear cap of t he lens ’. 3 Align the red mark on the came ra’s mount with the red do t on th e lens.
25 4 T o remov e the lens, press the lens lock butt on and turn th e lens counte r–clockwise until i t stop s. Gen tly remove t he lens from t he camer a body . CAUTION !! • On the mount surface of the lens, there are a number of electri cal contac ts.
26 SETTING THE LANGUAGE Camera menus and messag es that appear on the color LCD monito r can be displayed in either English, Ja panese, German or French and other languag es. Y ou should rece ive the SD14 camera pre-set to English, however , if necessary , you can c hange the came ra language yourself.
27 SETTING THE TIME AND DA TE The SD14 camera records th e date and time when each image is captured and stores th is information with the image. T o ensure that the correct informa tion is recorded w.
28 INSERTING AND REMOVING THE CF CARD The SD14 camera uses CompactFlash™ (CF) cards to store i mages. The camera su pports both T ype I and T ype II CF cards, includ ing Microdrives . TO INSERT THE CF CARD 1 Set the “D”-Dial to the position. 2 Open the CF card cover , as shown in the illus trat ion.
29 TO REMOVE THE CF CARD 1 Set the “ D”-Dial to the position. • Make sure that the CF card busy light is off, before contin uing. 2 Slide the CF Card C over until it po ps open.

31 FILE NUMBERING SYSTEM The images you take are automatically assigne d file numbers fro m 0001 to 9999. When images are being re viewed, t he file num ber o f each image is display ed in the left corner of the In fo S trip (see P. 7 7 ). T he file number is also incorp orated into t he file name of the image.
32 5 Use arrows on the 4-way controller to sel e ct numb ering sy stem. 6 Press arrow o r to apply the settin g or arrow or to close the su b-menu without making any chan ges. FOLDER MANAGER Y ou can create and choose folders in which p hotographs will b e stored .
33 NOTE • The images will be receorded in the lates t created fo lder. • In the case of F ile number being set to Continuous, the number of recording image will be consecutive number. In t he case of File number being set t o Auto reset, the nu mber will st art fr om 0001.

35 T OP LCD ILLUMINA T ION Pressing the “T op LCD Illumination Button” act ivat es the ora n ge c olor LCD ill uminator , allowing the T op LCD display to be read in the dark. NOTE • The top LCD illumination will not fu nction if the camera is in Power Saving Mode ( P.
36 SHUTTER BUTT ON The shutter butto n of the SD14 came ras has two positions. Whe n you pres s the shutter bu tton “halfway down”, the came ra’s autofocus and Exposure Syste ms activate . When you press the button “all -the-way down ”, and the shutter will release to take a pic ture.
37 BASIC OPERA TION SELECTING THE EXPOS URE MODE The features and the ope ration metho ds of the four d iff erent exposu re modes of the camera are explain ed below .
38 When this symbol blinks, shutter spee d may be too sl ow and pic ture may be bl urred. In this case, please use a flash ( P. 4 3 ) or use a tripod to preven t blurring. 39 A APERTURE PRIORITY AE After you set the apertu re, the came ra will determine the ap propriate shu tter speed. If you select sm aller apertures, depth of field will be gr eater . Larger apertures tend to blur the backgrou nd, as depth of field will be shallo wer .
40 S SHUTTER SPEED PRIORITY AE When you set the desired shutter speed, the camera will select the appropriate aper tur e value f or cor rect ex posure. Y ou can ac hieve stop ac tion e ffec ts by selecting a fast shutter spe ed, or give t he fe eling of motion to a mo ving subject by sele cting a slow s hutt er speed.
41 M MANUAL EXPOSURE Set both the shu tter speed and apertu re value a ccordin g to the ind ication of the exposure me ter . Y ou can change th e exposure, as you desire . 1 Set the “D”-Dial to the “Drive-Area” ( P. 1 4 ). 2 Set the “Mode”-Di al to the “ M ” position.
42 BULB SETTING When long time exposures are required (for shooting night scenes or very dark subjects) the use of the “Bulb” setti ng is recommended. Please u se a tripod, when taking pictures with this settin g. Bulb photography can be performed onl y when ISO sens itivity is s et to ISO100 an d 200.
43 USING THE BUIL T -IN FLASH The cameras ha ve built-in flash for taking pictures at night o r in low lig ht, which is ve ry convenient. USING THE BUIL T -IN FLASH P mode, use this mode for au tomatic photograph y . T he flash s ync speed a nd aperture are set auto matically .
44 EXPOSURE MODE AND BUIL T -IN FLASH P mode Dependin g on the brightness of the subject, the most appro priate shutter sp eed (between 1/60 ～ 1/18 0 sec) and ape rture will be selected .
45 FUNCTION SETTING OF FLASH In addition to reg ular flash photo graph y , the built-in flash also incorporate s redeye redu ction function. Further it is also poss ible to use it d urin g the w ireless TTL flash mod e if you purchase an optional exte rnal flash unit (DG SU PER SA-STTL only).
46 FOCUSING Adjustment of autofo cus and manual focus operation are explain ed below . HOW T O USE AUT OFOCUS It is possible to use Autofocus function only wi th AF Lenses. Y o ur camera is equipped with highly precise AF System and incorpora tes two different autofocus modes.
47 SELECTING THE AUTO FOCUS MODE Pres s the FUNC button twice (ho lding the button down th e second time) and turn the “C”-di al to se lect either (Single AF Mode) or (Continuous Mo de) icon on the LC D panel. SINGLE AF MOD E Depress and hold the shut te r button “Half-way” to activate the aut ofocus function.
48 AF POINT SELECTION The SD14 is equipped with 5 focusing points. Selecting the AF point can be done automatically or manuall y by the photo grapher . Press button and select the desi red AF point b y rot ating the “C ”-dial displayed in th e viewfinder .
49 AF AUXILIAR Y LIGHT The built-in A F Auxiliary Light of the SD14 enable s focusing in low ligh t conditions. ■ The AF Auxiliary Light can be u sed with (Single AF mode) and automatic or center focus AF point selection only . ■ The AF Auxiliary Light is effective with the center focus of the auto matic AF selection only .
50 FOCUS LOCK This photo graphy method is use ful if a photographic su bject is not position ed wit hin the cent ral AF frame. 1 Choose the AF point according to th e " AF POINT SELECTION ” instructions on page 48 . 2 Position the ph otographic subject in to the selected AF fra me, and fo cus by pressing the sh utter button h alf-way .
51 OPERA TION OF THE DRIVE MODE Operation of the self-timer , and other functions o f the camera are explained by the following: DRIVE-AREA Some of th e important operations a nd settings of th e camera can b e activated b y the drive area of the “D”-dial.
52 CONTINUOUS SHOOTING In thi s mode , when you keep the sh utte r button fully d epressed , the ca mera wi ll tak e pictures continuously . At the time of continuous sho oting the nu mber of fram es per sec.
53 After you decide the co mposition of your picture, p ress the shu tter button ”H alf- way” and ad just the fo cu sing. Then, when you press the shutter button th e rest of the wa y , t he display in the vie wfinder will disappear and the self –timer will be act ivated.
54 ADV ANCED OPERA TION This section explains the application of the more advan ced functions of your camera, when co mposing the expressions of your pictu re. SETTING THE WHITE BALANCE （ WB ） The color of light reflected b y an object can vary depending on the color of the light sourc e illumina ting i t.

56 SETTIN G A CUST OM WHI TE BALANC E For more pre cise control of the whit e balance setting or when photograp hing under unusual ligh ting conditions, the " Set C usto m WB " opt ion can be us ed to capture a sa mple of neutral object in a scene to be used fo r color correc tion.
57 TIP • When a custom white balance setting is successfully captured, " Custom " will automatically become the selected item i n the White Balance me nu. • It is re comm ended th at an aut omatic ex posure mode suc h as P , A , or S be used when cap turing a custom white bala nce setting to ensure proper exp osur e.

59 RECORDING QUALITY SETTING 1 Press the but ton on th e bac k of th e camera to open th e Image Se tting Menu. 2 Use the butto n on t he 4- way c ontroll er to select the desired re cording quality . (The quality can be chang ed; RA W → FINE → NORM → BASIC by pres sing t he button.

61 SELECTING THE METERING MODE The ca mera has three adva nced meter ing modes. While pressing the button , rotate the “C”-dial to select the desire d metering mode and display it on the LCD pa nel. Releasing the metering butto n sets the selected meterin g mode.
62 AE LOCK The camera will fix and me morize th e exposure value, while you press the “A E” Lock button. When you wish to lo ck the exposu re of a subject off-center , AE lock is very useful. Use o f this fun ction with Center Area Me tering Mode is recommend ed.
63 EXPOSURE COMPENSA TION If yo u want to inte ntionally overexpo se or under expose t he pictur e, use this function . While pressing button, tu rn the “C”-dial to set the desired compen sation value. Then, release the Exposure Compensation button.
64 FLASH EXPOSURE COMPENSA TION It is possible to compensate the fl a sh output level without changing the background’s exposure. While pressing the button, turn the ”C”-dia l to set the compensation amount. ■ The LCD panel will show 0.0 when you init ially pres s the button.
65 AUT O BRACKETING This function of t he cam e ra let s y ou t ake a sequen ce of pictur es of the sam e subject at three different exposure levels; Appropriate Exposure , Under Exposure and O ver Ex posure. If it is dif ficult t o determi ne th e proper ex posure, please us e this fu nction.
66 ■ For the firs t frame, “ ” mark will be displa yed continuously on the LCD panel. Fo r the second frame , “ ” mark on the LCD panel, will blink slowly , then it will blink quickly for the th ird frame. ■ When you set the self-timer mode, the camera will automatically take three cons ecutiv e pict ures.
67 REMO TE CONTROLLER RS -31 This accessor y permits releasing the camera’s shutter from up to 16 feet (5m) away from in front of the camera, or up to 9.8 feet (3m) a way if you are 30 degrees to either side. (Depen ding on t he lens, th ere may be some restrictions when using it from the left side of the camera.
68 ■ The remote con trol mode can not be used to gether with cont inuous shooting mode. If the “D”-dial is set to the co ntinuous shooting mode, the camera will expose on ly one frame for each activ ation b y the remote contro ller .
69 WARNING !! • If you have se t the SD14’s chann el to remote co ntrol mo de, camera’s battery consumption will incr ease. In addition, camera’s ex posure display will disappear and AE Lock will not fu nction. If you are not using Remote Control please cancel the “ “ remote control mode by choosing “ - - “.

CAUTION!! • S-TT L aut o flas h does n ot work, if PC Sy nchro Term inal is used . • Set the camera ’s exposure mode to M and set to flash syn chronized speed Sync (1/180) or a shutter speed of 1/160 or lower.
72 REVIEWING , DELETING AND MODIFYING IMAGES This section e xplains how to revie w , dele te, an d modify images a fter they have been cap tured. TIP • The SD14 may not be able to display images captured by other cameras, or “SD14” images th at have been rena med or moved from the DCIM folder on the CF card .

76 REVIEWING IMAGES The pictures captu red by the SD 14 can be re viewed in various ways. T o review images captu red by the SD14 camera press the button on the back of t he camera. The last image recorded on the CF card will be display ed on the co lor LC D monito r in S ingle-Ima ge View .
77 VIEWING ONE IMAGE A T A TIME Press button on th e back of the ca mera to see recorded imag es in Single -Image View . While in Single-Image Vie w : • Press arrow on the 4-way controll er to see next image. • Press arr o w o n the 4-way contr oller to see previous imag e.
78 MAGNIFYING IMAGES (ZOOMED-IN VIEW) T o vie w image detail or check focus, reco rded images can be mag nified up to 5 levels, depen ding on the resolution o f the image. 81 VIEWING IMAGE INFORMA TION The Image In fo Screen contains additi onal informa tion about each image. T O DISPLA Y IMAGE INFO SCREEN Press the button from Single-Image, Contact Sheet, or Zoomed-In View . While in Image Info Screen: Press again or to close th e Image Info Screen and return to the previous view .
82 IMAGE INFO SCREEN FOR MAGNIFIED IMA GES It is possible to obtain detailed histogram information for a particular sectio n of an image by op ening the Image Info Scree n from Zoomed-In View . • For more information on the histogram see next section.
83 HIST OGRAM The histogra m is a graph d epicting the di stribution of b rightness values in the image for ea ch of the thre e color channels (Red, Green, a nd Blue). The horiz onta l axis show s the br ightness level, wit h darker pix els toward s the lef t side and brighter pixels to ward the right.
84 OVER-EXPOSURE W ARNING It is possible to indica te the o ver-exposed are as by highlighting them in red. . TO TURN ON OVER-E XPOSURE W ARNING 1 Make sure the came ra is turned o n. 2 Press the b utton on the back of the camera to display the Camera Set-up Menu.
85 VIEWING IMAGES ON A TV The SD 14 c amera ca n be conne cted to a tel evision or a v ideocas sette rec ord er using the provided vid eo cable, allowing th e recorded images to be viewed on the television monito r or recorded on videotape.
86 DELETING IMAGES This section describ es how to de lete th e image(s) recorded o n a CF ca rd. Images recorded on the CF card ca n be deleted one at a time or several at on ce using the Delete M enu.
87 DELETING A SINGLE IMAGE T O DELETE A SINGLE IMAGE 1 Use the arrow s on the 4-w ay contro ller to select the image to be dele ted in Contact Sheet or Singl e-Image V iew . 2 Press to display t he Delete Menu. • “ Current image ” will be the default se lection.
88 DELETING MUL TIPLE IMAGES T O DELETE MUL TIPLE IMAGES 1 Press to displ ay the Delete Menu . 2 Use t he arrows on the 4-way con troller to select “All ma rked” or “All”. • Locked images are no t deleted. Lo cked images mu st be unlocked first b efore th ey can be deleted (P 90).
89 MODIFYING IMAGES Image mo difications, such as lo cking, marking, and rotating, as well as automatic image playback, can be pe rf ormed from the M odificatio n Menu. The Modificatio n Menu contains the Lock Menu, Mark Menu, Rotate Menu, and Slideshow Menu.
