17 PREP ARA TION This section describes necessary preparations before using the camera. A TT ACHING THE CARR Y STRAP 1 Undo the end of the strap. 2 Attac h the ca mera stra p to cam era stra p eyelet on both sides as shown. 3 Reassemble the camera stra p as shown.
18 LENS CAP T o preserve the lens, the lens cap is attached. If you do not use the camera, please keep the lens cap att ached. HOW TO REMOVE THE LENS CAP Remove the lens cap as shown. A T T ACHING THE LENS CAP Fit the lens cap keeping the SIGMA logo horizont al.
19 LOADING THE BA TTER Y A lithi u m-ion battery , BP-31, is provided with the DP2 S camera. Charge the battery before using t he camera for the first time.
20 LOADING THE BA TTER Y 1 Open the Battery / C ard Cover in the direct ion of t he arrow , as shown in t he instruction. 2 Insert the battery into the chamber in accordance with the diagram. ● Insert the battery until it locks into place. 3 Close the cover securely .
21 TO REMOVE THE BA TTER Y 1 Make sure the came ra is turned off and open the Battery / Card Cover in the direction as shown by the arrow . 2 Eject the battery by sliding the battery compartment cover latch in the direction of the ar row , as show n in the illustr ation.
22 CHECKING THE BA TTERY ST A TUS The battery icon, which shows the capacity of the battery , is shown on the left corner on the color LCD p anel. Explanations of the symbols are given as follows. Please t ake notice of the battery status before and when in use.

24 SETTING THE LANGUAG E Y ou should receive the DP2S camera pre-set to Eng lish, however , if necessary , you can change the camera language yourself. 1 Set the Mode Dial t o the SET UP position and turn t he camera o n. 2 Use the button to select the [ Language ( 言語 ) ] menu and pre ss the button.
25 SETTING THE TIME AND DA TE The DP2S c amera records t he date a nd time when each image is capt ured and stores this i nformation with the i mage. T o ensure that the c orrect inform ation is recor.
26 CAMERA SET -UP MENU This section describes the various settings in the Camera Set-up menu. It is possible to set the camera functions or “reset settings to default” from the Camera Set-up menu display . The Camera Set-up menu is divided into three group s.
27 List Display and Open Display The Camera Set-up menu of the DP2S camera has two display patterns; List Display and Open Display . List Display Menu Items are listed. In [ Capt ure Settings ], t he icon of the c urrent settin g option is displayed on the right.

37 INSERTING AND REMOVING THE CARD The DP2S camera uses a SD memory card, SDHC memory card and Multimedia card to store data. TO INSERT THE CARD 1 T urn off the camera and open the Battery/ Card Cover, as show n in the illustr ation. 2 Insert the card in accordance with the instruction of Battery/ Card chamber .

39 FORMA TTING THE CARD New cards must be formatted before use. In addition, cards w ith corrupt or incompatible fil e systems may need to be formatted before use. 41 BASIC OPERA TION SELECTING THE EXPOSURE MODE The features and the operation me thods of the four dif ferent exposure modes of the camera are explained below . WARNING !! • In this section, the instruction is w ritten on the assumption that [ Key arr angemen t ] of [ Shooting Menu ] ( P.
42 WARNING !! • When is sho w n on the color LCD monitor, the camera is set slower than 1/25). If this mark is displayed, please use the flash ( P.46, 69 ) or a tripod. • If the subject is too bright or dark, both shutter speed and aperture value indicators will blink and w ill show the limit valu es.
43 A APERTURE PRIORITY AE After you set t he aperture, the camera w ill determine the appropriate shutter speed. If you select smaller apertures, depth of field will be greater . Larger apertur es tend to blur the background, as depth of field will b e shallower .
44 S SHUTTER SPEED PRIORITY AE When you set the desired shut ter speed, the camera will sel ect the appropriate aperture value for correct exposure. Y ou can achieve stop action ef fects by se lecting a fast shutter speed, or give the feeling of motion to a moving subject by select ing a slow shutter speed.
45 M MANUAL EXPOSURE Set both the shutter speed and aperture value according to the indication of the exposure meter . Y ou can change the exposure, as you desire. 1 Set the Mode Dial to the M position. (The shutter speed value is illuminated in green.
46 USING THE BUIL T -IN FLASH The cameras have built-in flash for t aking pictures at night or in low light, which is very convenient. USING THE BUIL T -IN FLASH 1 Eject the f lash by sliding t he Flas h Pop-Up Lever . 2 Make sure that the Flash Mode icon is displayed on the co lor LCD monitor .
47 SETTING THE FLASH MODE It is possible to select other flash modes such as Exposure Compensation mode or Red-Ey e Reduction mode. The Flash Mode can be set in the Quick Set Menu ( P. 3 4 ) or [ Capture Sett ings ] ( P. 2 6 ) → [ Flash Mode ]. Normal Flash * Redeye Slow Sync.
48 FOCUSING Adjustment of autofocus an d manual focus oper ation are explained belo w . HOW T O USE AUTOFOCUS Position the photographic subje ct within the centre of the composition and press the shutter button “half-way”. • If autof ocus is sel ected, the fo cusing poin t will be illumi nated in gre en.
49 FOCUSING POINT SELECTION The DP2S is equipped with 9 focusing points and it is possible to select the desired focusing point. 1 Press the button. 2 Press the button to select the de sired focusing point, and press the bu tton to apply it.
50 MANUAL FOCUS In situations where autofocus or focus lock is not effective, you can focus manually . 1 Set the focus mode to M F mode by pressing button sev eral ti mes. ( MF icon and “the scale bar” will be displayed on the color LCD monitor). 2 T urn the MF Dial on the came ra body until y ou get a c lear sh arp ima ge.

52 CONTINUOUS SHOOTING [Continu ous] In this mode, when you keep the shutter button fully depressed, the camera will ta ke pictures continuously . • When th e camera is in co ntinuous mode, the maximum number of frames is four in JPEG and three in RAW .
53 ADV ANCED OPERA TION This section explai ns the application of the more advanc ed functions of your camera, when composing the expressions of your picture. SETTING THE WHITE BALANCE （ WB ） The color o f light reflected by an object can va ry depending on the color of the light source illuminating it.

55 SETTING A CU ST OM WHITE BALANCE For more precise control of the white balance setting or when photographing under unusual li ghting con ditions, the " Set Custom WB " option can be used to capture a sample of neutral object in a scene to be used for color correction.
56 SETTING THE SENSITIVITY （ ISO EQUIV ALENCY ） The photosensitivity of digital cameras is described in terms of “ISO equivalent” like silver-halide film cameras. (ISO sensitivity P. 1 1 2 ) The ISO Sensitivity can be set in Quick Set Menu ( P.

59 PICTURE SETTINGS It is possible to ad just the recording image p arameter (contrast, sharpness and saturation). Contrast Contrast can be increased by moving the cu rsor to + side, or decreased, preserving ima ge det ail, by moving the cursor to - side.
60 SELECTING THE METERING MODE The camera has three advanced metering modes. The Metering Mode can be set in Quick Set Menu ( P. 3 4 ) or [ Capture S ettings ] ( P.
61 AE LOCK The camera will fix and memorize the exposure value whil st the “AE” Lock button is depressed. Whe n you wish to lock the exposure of a subject off-center , AE lock is very useful. Use of this function with S pot Mete rin g Mode is recommended.
62 [ Center AF Lock ] Ensure th e subje ct is withi n the cent er focusi ng point and press the button to activate and lock the autofocus. Please note, o nly the center focusing point will be us ed when the button is pressed. The exposure will only be locked w hen the shutter button is depressed “half-wa y ”.
63 EXPOSURE COMPENSA TION If you want to intentionally ov erex pose or underexpose the picture, use this function. Select the desired comp ensation value by using the buttons. • Exposure compensatio n can be set in 1/3 stop increm ent s from +3.0 to -3.
64 FLASH EXPOSURE COMPENSA TION It is possible to compensate the flas h output level without changing the background’s ex posure. 1 Press th e button after ejecting the flash b y using the Flash Pop-up lever . (The Allocate function guide will be disp layed on the bottom of the LCD mo nitor .
65 AUTO BRACKETING This function of the camera let s you take a sequence of pictures of the same subject at three different exposure levels; Appro priate Exposure, Under Exposure and Over Exposure. If it is dif ficult to determine the proper exposure, please use this function.
66 TIP • If the [ Q uick Prev iew ] in t he [ Capture Settings ] menu is set to other than [ Off ] , three images can be v iewed at a time. It is easy to check the ex posure d ifference between th e images.
67 COLOR MODE It is possible to select the desired Color mode depending on the shooting conditions. In ad dition to the above settings, it is also possible to select Sepia and Monochrome (B&W) photography modes. The Color Mode can be set in the Quick Set Menu ( P.
68 WARNING !! • [ B&W ] and [ Sepia ] can b e selected w hen the Ima ge Quality is set only to JPEG ( FINE , NORMAL , BA SIC ). IMAGE WITH SOUND It is possible to record sound after t aking a picture. This function is convenient for recordin g shooting information at the time of t aking the photograph.
69 WARNING !! • Once Image w ith sound is set, the ca mera will conti nue to hold this setting until [ Off ] is slected in [ Image with Sound ]. TIP • The sound rec ording will be stored as a WAV file. It w ill be stored in the same fol der and have the sa me file name a s the image file.
70 AUTO ROT A TE It is possible to record the vertical image information to ima ges. The Auto Rot ate can be set by [ Cap ture Settings ] ( P. 2 6 ) → [ Auto Rot ate ]. Of f The vertical image inf ormation will not be recorded. On* The vertical image information will be recorded.
71 INTERV AL TIMER It is possible to take pic tures aut omatically at selected int ervals. WARNING !! • The int erval timer shoot ing will be t erminated automatically if the battery is empty. We recommend using the AC adapter “SAC-3” (sold separ etely ).
72 ● When the focus mode is se t t o AF , the AF will be locked at the first frame. From the second frame, pictur es will be t aken with the same focus position as the first frame. ● When the focus mode is set to MF , it is possible to change the focus during the interval time r shoot ing by turning the MF Dial.
73 MY SETTINGS It is possible to customize the Capture Settings. (Up to three patterns can be stored.) The following [ Capture Settings ] ( P. 2 6 ) are available.
74 EXP . KEY ARRANGEMENT The button and the button are used for changing the aperture value, shutter speed and ex posure compensation. It is possible to change the function of them for each Exposure Mode. It is possible to set from [ Capture Settings ] ( P.
75 REVIEWING AND DELETING IMAGES This section explains how to review and delete images af ter they have been captured. TIP • The D P2S may not be able to di splay images c aptured by other cameras, or “DP2S” images that have been r enamed or moved from the DCIM folder on the card.
76 TIP • To manua lly turn off the Qu ick Preview image , press the shu tter button half-way. • It w ill not be possi ble to zoom in t o the preview image, or chan ge to another image w hile the Quick Prev iew is up. REVIEWING IMAGES The pictures captured by the DP2S can be reviewed in various ways.
77 VIEWING ONE IMAGE A T A TIME Press the button on the back of the camera to see the recorded images in Single-Image V iew . WHILE IN SINGLE-I MAGE VIEW : z Press t he button to see the next image.
78 MAGNIFYING IMAGES (ZOOMED-IN VIEW) Reviewed images can be magnif ied, making it possible to check image details and focusi ng. While re viewing i mages, press th e button. The magnification ratio will be changed as follows. Original → X1 .25 → X1 .
79 VIEWING NINE IMAGES A T A TIME (CONT ACT SHEET VIEW) Images can be viewed in a "contact shee t" of nine thumbnail images. While revi ewing ima ges, pres s the bu tton. WHILE IN CONT ACT SHEET VIEW : z Press t he buttons to change the image selection.
80 VIEWING IMAGE S A P AGE A T A TIME (JUMP MODE) Use Jump Mode to browse large sets of images more quickly , or to skip right to the first or last page of images on the card. Press t he button twice from Single-Image View (or once from Contact Sheet View).
81 VIEWING IMAGES WITH SOUND Play sounds that have been recorded with Images ( P. 6 8 ) or play the voice memo function ( P. 9 7 ). 1 When the image with sound is sele cted during image revie w , the Icon and the Contro l Icons a re disp layed on the col or LCD monitor .
82 VIEWING IMAGE INFORMA TION The Image Info Screen contains addit ional information about each image. Press the button several times from the Single-Image or Zoomed-In View .

84 HIST OGRAM The histogra m is a graph depicti ng the distribut ion of brightn ess values in the image for ea ch of the three color cha nnels (Red, Gree n, and Blue) (The h istogram display ed in the Sh ooting Mode is t he distributi on of tones in the im age).
85 VIEWING IMAGES ON A TV The DP2S camera can be connected to a television or a video device using the provided A V cable, allowing the recorded images to be viewed on the television monitor or recorded on video recording media. TO CONN ECT THE CAMERA TO A VIDEO DEVICE 1 Open the connector cover.
86 DELETING FILES This section describes how to delete the files recorded on a card. Files recorded on the card ca n be deleted one at a time or several at once using the Delete Menu. WARNING !! • This chapter refers to still images, sound and movie files.

95 ROT A TING IMAGES It is possible to rot ate the displayed image. The images’ new orientation will be used in all views as well as in the Slideshow . TIP • Images rotate d on the camera w ill be displayed in their rotated orientation in SIGMA Photo Pro.
96 EXPOSURE W ARNING It is possible to indicate the over-ex posed areas by highlighting them in red.
