3.2.2. Current DHCP Mappings Fi g. 20 Current DHCP mappings. On this page, all the current static or dynamic DHCP mappings ar e shown. A DHCP mapping is a cor- re spondence relationship between an IP addr ess assigned by the DHCP server and a computer or device that obtains the IP addr ess.
3.3. General Operations 3.3.1. Selec ting an Operational Mode Fi g. 22. Operational modes settings. Th e SMC2582W-B suppor ts 3 operational modes for meeting various wir eless connectivity require- ments: • Access P oint (AP). Th e AP mode enables IEEE 802.
between an IEEE 802.11 Station (ST A) and an IEEE 802.11 Access Poin t (AP). An ST A is usually a client computer (PC or PDA) with a WLAN net work int er face card (NIC). • WDS. Th is type of wireless link is specified in the IEEE 802.11 standard for communica tion between two IEEE 802.
backup , and configuration restor e can be achieved via HTTP or TFTP . The HTTP-based way is suggest- ed because it’ s more user-friendly . Howev er , due to different beha vior of different Web br owser ty pes and versions , HT TP-based firmware management oper ations may not w ork properly with some W eb bro wsers.
To restore configuration of the SMC2582W-B by HTTP: 1. Click Browse and then select a correct configuration .he x file. Y ou have t o make sure the file name is the SMC2582W-B’ s MAC addr ess. The firmware file pa th will be shown in the Fi rmware file name text box.
Fig. 30. TFTP Ser ver . NOTE: After th e dialog box of the TFTP ser ver pr ogram appears, be sure to specify the wo rking folder within which the downloaded firmware files r eside. NOTE: Make sur e the Accept r ead requests check bo x of TFTP Ser ver is selected.
To back up configuration of the SMC2582W-B by TFTP: 1. Get a computer that will be used as a TFTP server and as a managing computer to trigger the backup process. 2. Connect the computer and one of the LAN Ethernet switch port with a normal Ethernet cable.

S et the Access control type to in cl usive. 3. Specify the MAC address of a wireless clien t to allow access , and then click Add.
3.6. Configuring Advanced Settings 3.6.1. Pack et Filters Th e SMC2582W-B provides lay er 2 (Ethernet T ype Filters), layer 3 (IP Pr otocol F ilters), and layer 4 (T CP/UDP Port Filters) filtering capabilities. The configuration pr ocesses for the filters ar e similar .
source IP addr ess range (Sourc e IP Address AND Sour ce Subnet Mask), and destination IP address r ange (Destination IP Addr ess AND Destination Subnet Mask). A source (destina tion) IP address range is determined b y per forming an AND operation on the source (destina tion) IP address field and the sour ce (destination) subnet mask field .
3.6.2.3. Syst em Log Fi g. 53. System log settings. Sy stem events can be logged t o the on-board RAM of the SMC2582W-B (Local log) or sent in the form of SNMP trap (Remote log by SNMP trap) or BSD Sy slog (Remote log by BSD Syslog) to a remote SNMP tr ap monitoring server or remote Syslog server , respectively .
To s p e c i f y a trap target: 1. T ype the IP address of the target host. 2. T ype the Co m m u n i ty for the host. 3. S elect the corresponding check box next to the IP addr ess text box.
Appendix A: Default S ettings TIP: Pr ess the Default switch on the housing of a pow ered-on SMC2582W-B t o reset the configuration settings t o factor y-default values.
Appendix B: T roubleshooting Check the following first: • Mak e sure that the pow er of the SMC2582W-B is on and the Ethernet cables ar e connected firmly to the RJ-45 jacks of the SMC2582W-B . • Mak e sure that the LED AL V of the SMC2582W-B is blinking to indica te the SMC2582W-B is wor kin g.
For a w ire le ss client computer to communica te with a corr espondent host on the Internet by the host’ s domain name (e.g. http://www .wi-fi.com), it first sends a DNS request to a DNS server on the Internet. The DNS request trav els first to the AP , then the AP relays this request to the default ga te- way of the client computer .
• So l v e the preceding pr oblem first. • Ar e the IP address of the SMC2582W-B and the IP addr ess of the client computer in the same IP subnet? • If y ou cannot find any incorr ect settings of the SMC2582W-B, the default gatew ay may be rea ll y d own or there are other communica tion problems on the network backbone .
• My SMC2582W-B stops working and does not respond t o W eb management requests. • The firmwar e of the SMC2582W-B may be stuck in an incorr ect state. • Unplug the power c onnector from the power jack, and then re-plug the connector to re star t the SMC2582W-B.
