6 Over view What you can do with your Network Walkman First, you need to install the SonicStage Software into your computer. You can easily transfer digital audio files from your computer to the built-in flash memory or MagicGate-compatible “Memory Stick Duo” (not supplied), and carry it anywhere to enjoy.

8 On “MagicGate Memory Stick” What is a “Memory Stick”? “Memory Stick” is a compact, portable and versatile Integrated Circuit recording medium with a data capacity that exceeds a floppy disk. “Memory Stick” is specially designed for exchanging and sharing digital data among “Memory Stick” compatible products.
9 Using “Memory Stick” (not supplied) on your Network Walkman Prepare MagicGate-compatible “Memory Stick Duo”. “Memory Stick” is not supplied with your Network Walkman. Although there are several types of “Memory Stick”, MagicGate-compatible “ Memory Stick Duo” is the only media that supports your Network Walkman.

11 Step 2: Char ging the batter y Charge the built-in battery before using your Network Walkman. Connect the AC power adaptor as illustrated below. The control buttons on your Network Walkman are all disabled while it is attached to the USB cradle or the recording USB cradle.

15 Basic Operations Basic Operations T ransferring audio files fr om the computer to your Network W alkman Note Before connecting your Network Walkman to the computer for the first time, be sure to install the SonicStage software from the supplied CD-ROM in your computer.
16 4 Connect your Network Walkman to the computer. 1 Connect the AC power adaptor*. Connect the supplied AC power adaptor to the DC IN jack on the USB cradle or the recording USB cradle, and then to a wall outlet. 2 Connect the USB cradle or the recording USB cradle to the computer.
17 Basic Operations 4 Attach your Network Walkman to the USB cradle or the recording USB cradle. “CONNECT” is indicated in the Network Walkman display, and the access lamp blinks while accessing the computer. Note Be sure to attach your Network Walkman in the arrow direction as illustrated.
18 5 Transfer audio files to your Network Walkman. For information on transferring audio files to the built-in flash memory or MagicGate-compatible “Memory Stick Duo” (not supplied), refer to the separate manual “SonicStage Operating Instructions.
19 Basic Operations Recor ding onto your Network W alkman — Only for NW-MS77DR You can record songs onto your Network Walkman from a digital audio device (e.g. CD player) using an optical digital cable (supplied), or an analog audio device (e.g. cassette tape player) using a connecting cord (not supplied), not via computer.
20 2 Connect the Network Walkman to a digital/analog audio device. 1 Connect the AC power adaptor. Connect the supplied AC power adaptor to the DC IN jack on the recording USB cradle, and then to a wall outlet. 2 Connect the recording USB cradle and the digital/analog audio device.
21 Basic Operations 4 Attach the Network Walkman to the recording USB cradle. Note Be sure to attach your Network Walkman in the direction of the arrow as illustrated below. 3 Start recording. When synchro-recording is cancelled 1 Pause the playback of the CD, etc.
22 Listening to music with your Network W alkman Charge the battery (page 11) and transfer/record (only for NW-MS77DR) audio files to the built-in flash memory or MagicGate-compatible “Memory Stick Duo” (not supplied) (page 15 to 21) prior to listening to music.
23 Basic Operations 2 Start playback. 1 Press the Play/Stop button. 2 Rotate the VOL (+/–) control to adjust the volume. HOLD switch (Set to off.) When the normal playback mode is selected, playback stops automatically after the last song is played*.
24 Listening to music with your Network Walkman (continued) To remove “Memory Stick” (not supplied) Press the “Memory Stick” Eject button and open the “Memory Stick” slot. Push the “Memory Stick” slightly and release it. On other operations z Tip You can switch to the Group mode by pulling the Shuttle switch.
25 Basic Operations Removing the headphones from your Network Walkman This procedure is required when you use the supplied extension headphone cord. 1 Rotate the plug cover counterclockwise to disconnect it from your Network Walkman. 2 Pull the plug cover from the plug in the direction of the arrow.
26 Plug cover Adaptor Attaching the plug cover to the supplied extension headphone cord The extension headphone cord is convenient when your Network Walkman is in your pocket or carrying bag. 1 Slip the headphone plug of the extension cord into the plug cover.
27 Advanced Operations 1 Press the MENU button. The menu screen is displayed. PLAYMODE> 2 Rotate the Shuttle switch to select “PLAYMODE >” and press the Play/ Stop button to confirm. NORMAL 3 Rotate the Shuttle switch to select a desired play mode and press the Play/ Stop button to confirm.
28 Changing the display mode You can view information such as track numbers or titles in the display while music is played or stopped. Change the display mode by operating the Shuttle switch in the Menu mode. • Lap Time: Elapsed time display mode The following will be displayed after a music title and artist name are displayed.
29 Advanced Operations Selecting the group display mode For any menu mode, you can select the group display by pulling the Shuttle switch. 30 Adjusting tr eble and bass (Digital sound pr eset) You can adjust the treble and bass. You can preset two settings, which can be selected during playback.
31 Advanced Operations 4 Press the MENU button The display returns to the normal screen. To adjust the “SOUND 2” setting Select “SOUND :2 >” in 1 of step 3. To cancel the menu mode Select [RETURN] in the menu screen or press the MENU button.
32 Locking the contr ols (HOLD) You can protect your Network Walkman against accidental operation by using the HOLD function when carrying it. Slide the HOLD switch in the direction of the arrow. All operation buttons are disabled. If you press buttons while the HOLD switch is on, “HOLD” blinks in the display.
33 Adjusting the settings of your Network Walkman Adjusting the time setting of your Network W alkman to a computer’ s built-in clock If the function is set to “ON,” the time setting of your Net.
34 4 As you did in step 3, adjust the settings for “month” and “date.” After rotating the Shuttle switch to adjust the “date” setting, press the Play/Stop button to confirm, the display switches to the time setting screen. 1:00 5 Rotate the Shuttle switch to adjust the “hour” setting and press the Play/Stop button to confirm.
35 Adjusting the settings of your Network Walkman Limiting the volume (A VLS) You can set AVLS (Automatic Volume Limiter System) to limit the maximum volume to prevent auditory disturbance or distraction. With AVLS, you can listen to music at a comfortable volume level.

41 Other functions Other functions Erasing audio file (ERASE) You can erase a song stored in the built-in flash memory or “Memory Stick Duo” (not supplied) by track or group (album).
42 Regr ouping songs (REGROUP) The song group function may be disabled* when a song has been deleted from or added to the built-in flash memory or “Memory Stick Duo” by operating the computer in which the SonicStage software is not installed (page 15).
43 Other functions Char ging the batter y with a USB connection (USB CHARGE) The setting enables you to charge your Network Walkman by connecting your Network Walkman to the computer using the dedicated USB cable. You can charge the battery without connecting the AC power adaptor.
44 Formatting memor y (FORMA T) You can use your Network Walkman to format the built-in flash memory or “Memory Stick Duo” (not supplied). If memory is formatted, all data previously stored in the memory will be erased. Be sure to verify the data stored in the memory prior to formatting.
45 Other Information Other Information Pr ecautions On safety • Do not put any foreign objects in the DC IN jack of the USB cradle. • Be sure not to short-circuit the terminals of the USB cradle with other metallic objects.
46 When disposing the Network Walkman This Network Walkman has a built-in nickel metal hydride battery. When you dispose of the Network Walkman, be sure to dispose of it properly. Certain countries may regulate disposal of the battery used to power this product.

48 Tr oubleshooting If you experience any of the following difficulties while using your Network Walkman, use this troubleshooting guide to help you to remedy the problem prior to consult a Sony dealer. Should any problem persist, consult your nearest Sony dealer.
49 Other Information On the display window Symptom The backlight is not turned on. “ s ” is displayed for a title. On charging the battery Symptom Battery life is short. The Charge lamp does not light. The Charge lamp blinks. On the connection with the computer or supplied software Symptom The software cannot be installed.
50 Troubleshooting (continued) Symptom Your Network Walkman is not recognized by the computer when it is connected to the computer. Song cannot be transferred. The number of audio files that can be transferred is not much. (Available recording time is short.
51 Other Information Symptom Audio files are transferred back to the computer without operations occasionally when the Network Walkman is connected to the computer. After connecting the Network Walkman to the computer, “Memory Stick” is displayed but files cannot be found.
52 Troubleshooting (continued) Other Symptom There is no beep sound when your Network Walkman is operated. “Memory Stick” cannot be inserted into the slot. The current time is reset. Your Network Walkman, the USB cradle or the recording USB cradle gets warm.

Message ACCESS AVLS CANNOT PLAY CANNOT REC CONNECT ERROR EXPIRED FILE ERROR FORMAT ERROR Meaning Accessing “Memory Stick”. The volume level exceeds the rated value while the AVLS is enabled.
54 Message GROUP FULL HOLD LOW BATT MEMORY FULL MG ERROR MS LOCKED NO AUDIO NO DATA READ ONLY STICK ERROR TYPE ERROR Meaning The maximum number of groups in the built-in flash memory or the “Memory Stick” has been exceeded. All operation buttons are disabled since the HOLD switch is set to on.
55 Other Information To delete abnormal data from a “Memory Stick” or built-in flash memory If “CANNOT PLAY,” “EXPIRED,” “FILE ERROR,” “STICK ERROR,” or “MG ERROR” is displayed, there is a problem with all or part of the data stored in the “Memory Stick” or the built-in flash memory.
