6 GENERAL SERVICE: 1. Never run an engine indoors or in a poor ly ventilated area. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless, and de adly gas. 2. Before cleaning, repair ing, or inspecting, make certain the blade( s) and all moving parts have stopped.

10 SECTION 5: TRACTOR SET-UP Gas and Oil Fill-up Use only clean, fresh (under 30 da ys old), unleaded gasoline. Fill tank to no more than 1/2 inch below the top of the filler neck to allo w space for fuel expansion. WARNING: Use extreme ca re when handling gasoline.
11 Setting the Gauge Wheels and Roller Gauge Wheels Select the height posit ion of the cutting deck by placing the deck lift lever in any of the six dif ferent cutting height notches on the ri ght fender. Adjust the deck whee ls so that they are between ¼-in ch and ½-inch above the gr ound as follows.

13 Thro tt l e C on t rol The throttle co ntrol lever is located on the right side of the tractor’s dash panel. This lever controls the spee d of the engine.
14 Systems Indicator Monitor / Hour Meter LCD Located in the center of the tra ctor’s cons ole, the systems indicator monitor reco rds, and displays on its LCD, hours of trac tor operati on whenever th e ignition key is rotated out of the STOP po sition.
15 SECTION 7: OPERATING YOUR GARDEN TRACTOR Safety Interlock System This tractor is equipped with a safet y interlock system for the protection of the ope rator. Before each use, check the safety interlock system f or proper operation. If the interlock system should ever malfunction, do not operate the t ractor.
16 Starting the Engine WARNING: Do not operate th e tractor if the interlock system is malfunctioning. This system was designed f or your saf ety and protection. NOTE: Refer to th e TRACTOR SET-UP on page 1 0 of this manual for Gasolin e and Oil fill-up instructions.
17 Driving On Slopes Refer to th e SLOPE GAUGE on page 9 to help determine slopes where you may operate the tractor safely. WARNING: Do not mow on inclines with a slope in excess of 15 deg rees (a rise of approximatel y 2-1/2 feet every 10 f eet). The tractor could overturn and cause seri ous injury.
18 Engaging the PTO (Blades) Engaging the PT O transfe rs power to the cutting deck or other (sep arately available) attach ments. To engage the PTO, proceed as follows: • Move the thrott le control lever to the FAST (rabbit) position. • Pull the PT O/Blade Engage knob outwar d into the engaged (ON) positi on.
19 SECTION 8: MAKING ADJUSTMENTS WARNING: Ne ver atte mpt to make any adjustments while the engine is running, Leveling the Deck NOTE: Check the tractor’ s tire pressure before performing any de ck leveling adjustments. Refer to Tires on page 26 for informati on regarding tire pressure.
20 P arking Brake Adjustment WARNING: Never attempt to a djust the brakes while the engin e is running. Always disengage PTO, stop engine and remove key to prevent uninten ded starting.
21 SECTION 9: MAINTAINING YOUR GARDEN TRACTOR NOTE: Refer to Maintenance Chart on page 31 for a reference of recommend ed maintenance intervals. WARNING: Before performing any maintenance or rep airs, disengage PTO, set parking brake, st op engine and remove key t o prevent unint ended starting.
22 IMPORT ANT : The engine may overheat and/or damage may result if the oil level is below the ADD or over the FULL on the dipstick. • Reinstall the oil fill cap/dips tick securely onto the oil fill tube. IMPORT ANT : The oil fill cap/dip sti ck must be installed securely onto the tube at all ti mes when the engine is operating .

Severe engine damage could result from a failure to do so. • Start the tractor engine and allow it to run fo r thirty seconds, then stop the eng ine and remove the ignition key.
24 • Check the gap using a feeler gauge and adjust, if necessary, by carefully bending th e ground electrode. See Figu re 14. Set the spark plug gap to 0.030 (. 76 mm). Figure 14 • Reinstall each spar k plug into the cylinder head. Torque the spark plug to 28/3 2 ft.
25 Lubrication WARNING: Before lubricatin g, repairin g, or inspecti ng, always d isengage PTO, se t parking brake, st op engine and remove ke y to prevent unint ended starting. Engine Refer to Engine on page 21 for instruction regarding all engine-related lub rication.
26 SECTION 10: SERVICE WARNING: Before servicing, repairing, o r inspecting, always d isengage PTO, set parking brake, stop en gine and remove key to prevent unint ended starting. Tire s WARNING: Never exceed the maximum inflation pressure shown o n the sidewall of the tire.
27 IMPORT ANT : When replacing t he blade, be sure to install the blade with the side of the bla de marked ‘‘Bottom’’ (or with a part number stamp ed in it) facing the ground when the mower is in the operating position. IMPORT ANT : Use a torque wrench to tighten the blade spindle hex flange nut to be tween 70 lbs-ft.
28 • Gently slide the cu tting deck toward the front of the tractor allow ing the hoo ks on the deck to rele ase themselves from the deck stabilizer rod.

Engine If the engine will be out of service for two months or more, use the following storage pr ocedure: • Clean the exte rior surfaces of the engine.
