CHAPTER 1. Getting Started Introduction Thank you for purchasing the UMAX Astra 3 400 / 3450 sc anner. This versatile unit is perfect for the home or office. Use this scanner to add variety an d flair to y our docum ents, or to help you share images with others.
System Requirements This section de fines the m inimum requirements necessary to operate either the As tra 3400 / 3450. Please refer to the section below that applie s to your scanne r and c omputer type.
Installing the Software The PhotoDeluxe inst allation proce dure is different for Macintos h and PC computers. Th erefore, we have provided two sep arate sets of instructions. Follow the set of instructions for your computer. Installing Adobe PhotoDeluxe on the PC NOTE: PhotoDeluxe is compatib le with Windows 98, 95 and higher.
FOR MACINTOSH USERS: Whe n the UMAX VistaScan window opens on yo ur desktop, double- click on the UMAX CD Installer icon to begin the software installation. 2. Follow the onscreen instruction s to complete the installation of Presto! PageManager, UMAX VistaScan, OmniPage LE, and the online User’s Guide.
Connecting the USB Cable The instructions for connecting th e hardware interface cable are differe nt for PC and Macintos h users. Refer to the se ction belo w that appli es to your com puter ty pe. PC Connection 1. Locate the USB cable that is provid ed.
2. Plug the UTC cable into the conn ector marked “OPTION” on the back panel of the scanner. Please be sure the small triangular arro w on the pl ug is facing t oward the t op of the scanner. Connecting the Power Adapter 1. Plug the scanner’s power cord int o an electrical outlet.
CHAPTER 2. Your First Scan Before you begin y our first scan, you m ust install the scan ner and the bundled soft ware. Refer t o the Quick Install Guide for in stallation. You can pe rform a basi c scan using any of the so ftware appl ications bu ndled with t his scanne r.
You can change the view of the Preview image usin g t he “Zoom Tool”, or select a sca nning re gion using the “Fra me Selection T ool”. To find out m ore about h ow to use the se tools, cli ck on the use r tips text that appea rs when y our cursor p auses over the tool.
8. Lift the document cove r and place the item face-dow n so the top cente r of th e image aligns with the arrow at the back edge of the object glass. 9. Click the Preview button on the right side o f the VistaScan Beginner wi ndow and t he scanner be gins a low-resolution scan.
CHAPTER 3. Scanning Basics VistaScan is the primary program or driver you use to scan with your Astra 3400 / 3450 scanner. It is a TWAIN-com pliant pro gram, whic h means that it can be run from other program s that support scan ning, like PhotoDeluxe, OmniPage, an d others.
MagicMatch only functions whe n you are scanning in c olor m ode. When yo u are using M agicMatch, it automati cally disables the Le vel/Curve a nd Color Ad ju stment/Balance set tings in the VistaScan Advanced window. Show Ruler The Show Rul er comma nd displays o r hides the rulers that border the top and left sides of the Preview window.
3. Enter the file name under which you want to store the scanned image files (such as TMP) in the File Name text box. 4. Select the file format in which you want to save sca nned images from the File Format drop down list. Printer To specify whi ch printer t o use when printing sca nned images: 1.
3. Enter the file name of t he application executable in t he File Name text box. If you are not sure of th e directory path, click the Browse button to locate the correct path. 4. Select the im age form at in which y ou want to sa ve scanned im ages from the Image Format drop down list.
Scanning an item via the Beginn er window consists of just a few steps: 1. Perform a preview scan of the item to be scanne d by clicki ng the Previe w button. The item is quickly scanned at low-resolution, and is disp layed in the Preview w indow (on the left side of the VistaScan Beginner window) .
Zoom Tool – Lets you enlarge or re duce the view of the im age in the Preview window. To use the Zoom tool: Once the preview im age appears in the Preview window, click on the Magnifying Glass icon. Mo ve your cursor into the Prev iew window and click.
• Text/Lineart documents – use this setting when you want to scan the tex t contained in a document, or when you want to scan simple lineart graphics. • Web Images – use this setting when you want to scan graphics and then use th em on the web.
Changing the Original Document Source The Original Document Source setting identifies the item you want to scan. You can ch oose from the followi ng settings: Flatbed Reflective: Scans paper orig inals (non- transparencies) e.g., pho tographs, document s, and brochures.
Web Photo: Scans an image at the appropriate resolution for display on the monitor. B/W Photo: Scans black- and-white photos u sing 256 shades of gray (ranging from white to b lack) so you get smooth shade tran sitions in your scanned image. B/W Document: Scans te xt docum ents, bla ck-and-whi te line a rt, and ot her bl ack-and-whi te docume nts.
The table below gives you an idea of the file sizes you can expect based on the original image size and the resolution setting you specify. Th ese values are based on scanning images in 24-bit, True Color RGB mode. Im age sizes shown below are gi ven in megaby tes.
2. Enter t he desired resol ution se tting (betwee n 50 and 2 400 dpi) in the Custom resolution #1 box. 3. Repeat step 2 to define the Custom resolution #2 and Custom resolution #3 settings . 4. Click O K. The setti ngs you defi ned appear on the Resol ution sett ing drop do wn menu, under the Custom headin g.
Custom – Ope ns the Custom Descreen window, which allo ws you to specify a cust om line screen value. Refer to the Using Custom Descreen Settings section for information about how to set custo m descreen values.
You can scale the image using any of the scale factors listed below: • 200% • 150% • 100% • 50% • 25% • 10% • Custom You can also specify a custom scale factor by choo sing th e Custom opti on from the Scaling dro p down menu. See the Using C ustom Scaling Set tings section for more information about sp ecifying a custom scale factor.
Using the Auto Adjustment Feature Auto Adjust ment provi des a sim ple wa y to adjust the light and dark valu es of a color or grayscale im age you want to scan. To automatically adjust th e light and dark values: 1. Place the item you want to scan on the scanner object glas s.
Using the Multiple Scan Mode You can select multiple portions of the image you scanned in Preview mode using th e Multiple Frame tool. The Multiple Frame tool allows you to create two or more selection frames in the Preview Window. To create more than one selection fram e: 1.
Adjusting Im age Brigh tness, Contrast , Highlights, and Shadow s When you cli ck on the Bri ghtness/Contrast tab from the Col or Adjustme nt panel a series of slide bars appear. Adj ust the associated tones by dra gging the sli der in one of the ba rs to the left o r right.
Moving the slider on the scroll bar to the right incr eases the brightness of the mid-range gray tones. Moving it to the left dec reases the bri ghtness of the m id-range gray tones. The default set ting is 1.2. Reset Button Click the Reset button to cancel the changes and return the value to the default setting.
The following lists the possible rotate and flip selections: • Flip/Rotate Horizontally – flips th e image horizontally and rotates it 90 degrees coun ter clockwise. • Flip Horizontal – flips the image horizontally. • Rotate 90 CCW – rotates the image 90 degrees counter clockwise.
4. Click the Find/Ref resh Scanner option to re-initialize the scanner. Click the Help option to view VistaAccess online help. Click the Exit opt ion to rem ove the scanner ic on from the Windows Task bar and close VistaAccess. To use VistaAccess from the Macintosh: 1.
5. Click the icon that most closely represents the ite m you are goi ng to scan in the Click To Scan area of the VistaScan Beginner window. The item is scanned, and VistaScan automatically closes. After a moment the VistaShuttle E-Card window appears with the scanned ite m in the default E-Card template.
To use the copy utility: 1. Click on the Start bar. Click the Programs opt ion. Whe n the Program s pop-up menu appears , click the VistaScan option. The VistaScan pop-up menu appears. Click the UMAX Copy Utility selection to open th e program. 2. The UMAX Copy Utility window appears.
CHAPTER 4. Push Button Scanning The defining feature of the Astra 3400 / 3450 is its push button functionality. You can scan an image to e- mail, perform OCR (optical character recognitio n), or even use the scanner as a copy machine by pushing one of the three buttons on the front panel of the scanner.
NOTE: There are three icons in the Pu sh Button Configur ation window. Each icon represents a se parate scanner button function. Clicking on the icon displays a window with variables.
5. Select the desired resolution by clicking on the arrow to the right of the Resolution field and choosing one of the resets from the drop-down menu. 6. Select a scanning intensity level (brightness) by clicking on the arrow to the right of the Brightness field and cho osing the desired bri ghtness le vel from the drop-d own menu.
Configuring the Custom Button Values 1. Click on the Custom icon to open the wi ndow that c ontains the variables you are adjusti ng. NOTE: The Custom icon controls the values fo r both the E- mail and FAX and OCR (optical characte r recognition) features.
8. Click the OK button to save the Custom E-mail push button configur ation settings. The Custom setting is no w configure d to scan and se nd the sc an ned image to the selected e-mail application.
To configure the values for the OCR ( optica l character recognition) function: 1. If the OCR icon is not selected (enclosed in a red box), click the OCR icon. 2. Select the text editing application to use by clicking on the arrow to the right of the OCR Destination field.
CHAPTER 5. SCANNING PROJECTS The UMAX Astra 3400 / 3450 scanner includes bundled software to he lp you with a variety of tasks. This chapter shows you how to make a pe rsonalized calendar, c reate Web-ready images, and even turn a page of text into an online text document that you can edit.

Once you click on the desired image type, the scanne r starts scanning the im age using the appropriate settings. For Macintosh Users: After the scan is complete, a print window appears.

Select an image you want to post on a we b site (i.e., a picture , a postcard, etc.). 5. Lift the document cove r and place the item face-down in t he center of the object glass of the scanner.
Refer t o Chapter 2. Your First Scan for instructio ns on how to start PhotoDeluxe. 2. Place the item you would like to scan (i.e. a picture, a brochure, etc.) face-down so the top center of t he image aligns with the arrow at the top of the o bject glass.
11. Click the Web Page button. A new wi ndow appears allowing you to alter the image. • Click the 1Trim tab to select the portion of the image you want to use.
11. Click and dra g the scanne d form down to the PageType appl ication icon. PageType o pens and automatically displays the scan ned form. 12. Fill in the form text desired using the PageType tools. 13. Save the image when you have fini shed editi ng the form by selecting Save As fr om the Fi le menu a nd entering the relevant inform ation.
4. Click the Cards & More button. 5. Click the Calendars icon, and choose th e Monthly Calendars option from the drop-down menu. 6. Follow the on-screen instructions through step 5, then click the Add tab and choose th e scanner icon. The VistaScan Beginner wi ndow opens au tomatically.
11. Click the Save from the fil e menu to st ore the calenda r page, o r select Print to print the calenda r page. 12. Repeat this process until all calen dar pages are complete. For Macintosh Users: 1. Insert t he PhotoDel uxe CD in your C D-ROM dri ve.
3. Select Caere Applications option. 4. Select OmniPage LE to launch the applicatio n. The OmniPage LE window appears. For Macintosh Users: 1. Double-click the Hard D rive icon. 2. Double-click OmniPage LE . 3. Double-click the OmniPage LE icon. An OmniPage t oolbar appears.
4. Clic k Stop Scanning when you have scanne d all the de sired page s, and ent er the file name, fi le directory, and file type (the format in which you want to save the file). 5. Clic k OK to save the recogniz ed text. 6. Open y our work pr ocessor appli cation.
CHAPTER 6. HOW TO GET HELP The Astra 3400 / 3450 scanners have been designed to be reliable, easy- to-install, and easy-to-use. If you encounter any problems while installing or using your scanner, please follow the solutions ou tlined below. • Consult the online manual.
For Macintosh Users: 1. Place the Adobe PhotoDeluxe CD in the CD-ROM drive. 2. Double-click the PhotoDelux e CD icon on the desktop. 3. Double-click English . 4. Double-click Getting Started.pdf . (If you receive a n error, please install Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.
Installing Acrobat Reader for Macintosh Users To read the Om niPage LE online m anual you nee d to use Adobe Acrobat Reader. If it is not already installed on your computer, follow th e installation instructions below. 1. Place the Astra Scanners C D in the CD-ROM drive.
2. Connect the USB cable to the USB port on the back of t he computer. NOTE: If you unpl ug the sca nner’s power to turn it o ff, you must al so disconnect the USB cabl e from the computer. T o resume use of the scanner, reco nnect the power co rd, an d then the USB Cable.
Macintosh Version Problems and Solutions Problem: When I daisy chain the sca nner wit h other USB capa ble devices, I get a scanne r error. Solution: Many Macinto sh computers have at least t wo USB po rts. We recommend that you connect your scanner directly to one of these ports.
Remove all ot her devices from the USB chain, so t he scanner is the only device on the USB chain. Make sure that the scanner p ower adapte r is plugg ed di rectly into the wall, not into a power strip.
