13 Introduction Channel Lockout — Y ou can lock out any system, group, frequency , or channel while scanning. If you lock ou t a system or group, an y channels belonging to that system or group are also locked out. Frequency Loc kout — Y ou can lock out up to 5 00 frequencies (250 permanently locked out + 250 temporarily locked out).
14 Automatic Channel Step — Accepts frequencies on any valid channel step, even if it does not fall within the band plan’s default step. Frequency S tep — Let s you select a fre quency step (5, 6.25, 7.5, 8.33, 10, 12.5,15, 20, 25, 50 or 100 kHz) for manual mode and search mode.
15 Introduction Control Channel Only Scanning — If the scanner is set to scan a Motorola system, you can set it so it scans using only contro l channel data. Y ou do not have to program voice channel frequencies in to memory in this mode as long as all possible control chan nels are programmed.

24 Repeater Operation Repeater systems use two frequ encies: one transmits from the radio to a central repeater; the other tr ansmit s from the repeater to other radios in the system. With a repeater-based system, the repeater is located on top of a t all building or on a radio tower that provides great visibility to the area of operation.
25 Understanding Scanning and the BCD996T T runked Scanning While conventional scanning wor ked great while there were only a few group s wanting to use the fr equencies, with the advent of smaller , lower-cost radios more and more agencies and businesses wanted to take advant age of the utility of 2-way radio.

The computer then assigns that talk group to a specific voice channel and transmits that dat a over the control channel.

31 Setting Up Your Scanner Setting Up Y our Scanner These guidelines will help you install and set up your new scanner: The BCD996T can be place d on a convenient surface in your home as a base station, and co nnected t o a standard o utlet that supplies 1 20V AC, 60 Hz.
32 T o secure the radio, by means of the mounting bracket, to a surface, follow the steps below: 1. Attach the four protective rubber fe et to the moun ting bracket when you casually use the scanner on a flat surfac e.
33 Setting Up Your Scanner Insert the connector of th e supplied indoor telescopin g antenna to the BNC Antenna Connec tor and apply moderate pressure to secure it.

35 Setting Up Your Scanner 1. Remove the bracket if previously attached. 2. Remove the four Philips screws on the rear that secure the outer metal case and pull of f the case with care. 3. Install the DIN sleeve into the opening in your dashboard, lip facing out.
36 Removing the Scanner from the DIN-E Sleeve If you plan to connect other devices or wires to the r adio, such as a GPS unit, at a later time, you should plan to remove the scanne r from the DIN-E sleeve. This is easily done using the provided Removal Keys.
37 Setting Up Your Scanner Once the original radio is re moved from the vehicle dash an d the fit of the scanner is correct, be sure to connect all the power , audio, antenna, and any other cables or wires, to the scanner before the scanner is secured.

Y ou can, for example, rotate the knob s as well as press them to achieve a dif ferent result. Pressing a key briefly can produce one resu lt while pressing and holding, gives a different result.

48 Locking/Unlocking Systems Follow these steps to lock out a system so tha t it does not scan even if its quick key is selected. 1. T a p F to switch to the Function Mode then rotate the control to select the desired system. 2. Press [L/O] to temporarily lock out the system.
49 Operation T o toggle between ID Scan and ID Search, press F then press [SCAN/SEARCH] while the scanner is scanning the system. If the scanner does not scan the system l ong enough for you to easily do this, press F and rotate the Scroll Control to select the changed syste m.

52 Optimizing P25 Performance Y ou can optimize the scanner ’ s performance with digital APCO 25 systems. Follow these steps for each system where you ca n hear APCO 25 traffic. Notes: These steps work only when you can clearly receive the system. If you are in a weak-signal area or receive interference, these steps will not work.
53 Optimizing P25 Performance • The next to last line on th e display now shows the digit al error rate and the AUT O decode threshol d sta rt level (0-20). • The last line on the display shows the decode threshold levels for the system. Allow the scanner to monitor channel activity for severa l minutes.
54 Using the Menu The BCD996T incorporates an ef fective menu system that lets you make all the necessary setting options required to program the scanner and effectively use the many features. T o use the menu, press [MENU] . Y ou immediately see the screen display the menu title at the top and three of ten menu options beneath.

95 Searching and Storing The scanner st arts custom search of the custom search range you selected, stopping on any tran smission it finds and displaying the frequency . T urn the Scroll Control to change the sear ch direction. An arrow appe ars, showing the current search direction.
96 Set Delay Time — lets you set the amount of time the scanner will delay before continuing to sear ch after a transm ission end s. Set Modulation — let s you set the custom search range’s modulation type. Set Attenuator — lets you set whether the scanner will attenuate reception by 20 dB during search.
97 Searching and Storing for your metropolitan area that are unlocked and have the ir System Quick key enabled. In addition to this scan yo u can search any of the preprogrammed service or custom search ranges. While scanning, press F . 99 Searching and Storing Saving a Found Channel (Quick Save) If you hold on a channel or receive a de sired channel, you can save it by pressing [E YES ] instead of using Direct Entry . The alpha data is also stored. If a GPS unit is attach ed, the longitude and latitude dat a is save d and becomes th e name of that channel.
