V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 1 W ELCOME Congratulations on purchasing your Visioneer 9450 scanner . With this scanner , you can quickly scan stacks of items, single pages, color photos, or other paper items to place their electr onic images on y our computer .

S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER 5 Installing Installation is a quick, four-step process: ■ assemble the scanner ■ install the software ■ connect the scanner to your computer ■ set up the P aperP ort software to scan with y our scanner . S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER All the components to assemble the scanner are included in the bo x.
6 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 2. Slide the locking tab on the bottom of the scanner to its unlocked position. 3. Insert the slots (A) on the Paper Guide onto their tabs (B) on the scanner and slide the Guide down into place. The catch tabs (C) “ snap ” into place.
S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER 7 4. Insert the P aper Guide Extension into the Paper Guide and “ snap ” its tabs into place. 5. Insert the P aper Stop onto the back of the scanner and slide it downward to “ snap ” its tabs into place. Y ou ’ re now ready to install the software.
8 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE The P aperP or t CD includes all the necessar y installation files, as well as the P aperP or t software files and other software files. T o install the scanner softwar e: 1.
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 9 3. Select Install Scanner Software . The next Installation screen appears. 4. Select Install Scanner . Installation begins. F ollow the instructions on the scr een. If your computer is running Windows 2000 or Windows XP , your Installation CD might include ISIS driver software.
10 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 5. During installation of the scanner softwar e, a message instr ucts you to connect the scanner to the computer. Do not click the Finish button yet. Connect the scanner as described below and then, when the connections ar e complete, click Finish in this dialog box.
S TEP 3: C ONNECT THE S CANNER 11 T o connect the scanner: 1. Plug the ADF cable into the ADF por t on the body of the scanner . 2. Plug the pow er supply into its power port on the scanner . 3. Plug the power cord into the power supply and then into a wall outlet.
12 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 4. Plug the USB cable into the USB por t on the scanner. The USB port is identifi ed by its USB symbol. 5. Plug the USB cable into a USB por t on the computer, keyboard, or into a USB hub. If the plug does not attach easily , make sure that you are plugging it in correctly .
S TEP 3: C ONNECT THE S CANNER 13 6. T urn on the power switch. The status lights come on and fl ash indicating that the scanner is receiving power . Y our computer recognizes that a scanner has been plugged into the USB por t and automatically loads the appr opriate software to run the scanner .
14 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 9. F ollow the instr uctions on the screen. 10. When installation is fi nished, restart your computer . 11. If you removed the CD from the CD drive and want to install other software, reinsert the CD into the driv e.
L OADING D OCUMENTS TO S CAN 15 Scanning This section explains how to scan documents with y our Visioneer 9450 scanner . L OADING D OCUMENTS TO S CAN Y our scanner can scan a stack of documents or a single item. T o load a stack of documents in the A utomatic Document Feeder: 1.
16 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 2. Load your stack of documents face up , with their tops into the Automatic Document F eeder . T o load a single item: 1. Place the item on the scanner glass, face down. 2. Align the item with the arr ow on the reference frame.
S CANNING I TEMS 17 S CANNING I TEMS Y ou scan from the PaperP ort software (or other T wain software). T o scan an item: 1. If the P aperP or t software isn ’ t currently running, click the Windows S tart button and fr om the Pr ograms menu, choose the ScanS oft P aperP or t program.
18 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE The F olders P ane (which shows folders for organizing y our scanned images) is replaced by the Scan P ane. Y ou use the Scan Pane for scanning. 3. F rom the Scanner dr op-down menu, select your Visioneer 9450 V1.
S CANNING I TEMS 19 7. F rom the scanner dr op-down menu, choose whether you are going to scan a single item ( Flatbed ) or a stack of items ( ADF ). 8. If you want to see what the scanned image will look like befor e scanning its final image, click the Pr eview button.
20 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE On the P aperP ort Desktop: ■ The name of the scanned image is the day , date, and number of scanned items that day . F or example, in the sample abo ve, the stack of documents is the second scanned item so it is follo wed by a (2).

Using those options you can produce the best possible scan of your documents, color photos, magazine ar ticles, business cards, or any other items you scan.
22 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE white material. This setting produces the smallest fi le size for scanned items. ■ Halftone —scans the image so it appears to consist of gray tones. A pop-up menu appears so y ou can choose one of the halftone options.
A DJUSTING THE I MAGE WITH THE S CAN M ANAGER 23 B RIGHTNESS AND C ONTRAST Sometimes an item is scanned with the brightness and contrast set to be too light or too dark. For example, a note written with a light pencil may need to be scanned dar ker to improve legibility .
24 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE P REVIEW A UTO -A REA The item you ’ re scanning may not fill the scanner glass. In that case y ou can preview the item and use the Preview Auto-Area button to automatically set the size of the scanned image.

F or example, if you ’ re scanning a photograph and want to focus on one section, manually setting the output siz e removes the rest of the photograph from the final scanned image.

Y ou can set the area by typing numbers into those boxes.
A DJUSTING THE I MAGE WITH THE S CAN M ANAGER 27 R EVERSING THE I MAGE The Scan Manager has an Invert button and a M irror button for reversing the scanned image. Invert reverses the black and whites or the colors of an image. Mirroring flips the image 180 degrees.
28 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE A DJUSTING C OLOR AND G RAY I MAGES The Scan Manager has three buttons—Descreen, Sharpen, and Auto Level—for quickly adjusting color and gray images. These buttons do not apply to black and white or halftone images.
A DJUSTING THE I MAGE WITH THE S CAN M ANAGER 29 T o descreen an image: 1. Click the Descreen button. 2. Choose the appropriate option fr om the Descreen pop-up menu. W atch the preview image as y ou select various options to see which one is best for your final scanned image.
30 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE A UTO L EVEL Y our scanner can analyz e a color image to automatically determine the best settings to match the colors of the original image. Click this button to let the scanner automatically adjust the color settings.
A DJUSTING THE I MAGE WITH THE S CAN M ANAGER 31 H IGHLIGHT /S HADOW L EVELS Images have light and dark areas. The highlight is the lightest spot on an image; shadow is the darkest spot. The range of colors betw een the highlight and shadow determines the range of colors of the image.
32 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. Enter new settings in the bo xes for the three levels, or drag the small triangles at the bottom of the histogram. As you change the settings, the histogram changes to r eflect the ne w levels. 4. Click P review to see the effect of the ne w settings on the previe w image.
A DJUSTING THE I MAGE WITH THE S CAN M ANAGER 33 2. F rom the Channel dr op-down menu, choose RGB to adjust the gamma of all the channels together, or choose a single channel if available. 3. Drag the line up or down to set a ne w gamma. The input and output values represent values on the horiz ontal and vertical axes for the ne w gamma setting.
34 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Each color is paired with its complementar y color , so as you drag a triangle you are increasing a color while decreasing its complementar y color . 3. Click P review to see the effect of the ne w settings on the previe w image.
A DJUSTING THE I MAGE WITH THE S CAN M ANAGER 35 C OLOR D ROP - OUT Color drop-out is the ability of your scanner to automatically r emove one color from a scanned item.
36 V ISIONEER 9450 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE T o drop the color out of a black and white, or grayscale image: 1. F rom Color Mode menu, choose Black and White or Halftone , or 8-Bit G ray . The Color Drop-out icon becomes activ e. 2. Click the Color Drop-out icon.
C LEARING P APER J AMS 37 C LEARING P APER J AMS If your scanner stops scanning due to a paper jam in the Automatic Document F eeder , a warning dialog bo x appears after a fe w moments. T o clear a paper jam: 1. Open the Automatic Document F eeder cover .

Occasional cleaning, however , can help ensure continual optimal per formance. C LEANING THE S CANNER G LASS Scanning items that have excessive amounts of dir t or dust may dir ty the glass.
C ARE AND M AINTENANCE 39 R EPLACING THE ADF P AD A SSEMBLY The ADF pad spring may begin to w ear out after 150,000 scanned pages. Pr oblems with documents feeding into the ADF is an indication that the pad spring may be w earing out. Y ou received a replacement pad in the original scanner bo x, and you can also order a new one.

T ROUBLESHOOTING 41 P roblem: During installation I got the err or message: P aperP or t Installation is not complete. What do I do? The installation procedure was not successful. Y ou need to reinstall the P aperP or t software. P roblem: I got the error message: PaperP or t cannot allocate enough memor y to perform internal critical operations.
