4 2. SLOP E OPERA TION • Slopes are a majo r factor related to loss of control and tip-ov er accid ents which can r esult in severe injury or death. All slo pes require e xtra cauti on. If you cannot bac k up the slope or if you feel un easy on it, do not mow it.
5 • Never tam per with safety device s. Check their proper operation r egularly . Use all guards as instruc ted in this ma nual. • After s triking a f oreign objec t, stop th e engine, remove th e wire from the spark plug and tho roughly inspe ct the mow er for any d amage.

9 PO WER T AKE-OFF (PTO) SWITCH Figure 7 The PTO swit ch is loca ted on the ri ght control p anel. (See Fig ure 7) It con trols the e ngagement o f the cuttin g blades. When t he switch is: • UP : The cu tting blad es are engag ed (blad es are tu rning).
10 DRIVE HANDLES The drive h andles (le ft and right) are l ocated at th e top of the con trol tower. (See Figu re 8) The drive ha ndles are used to move , steer, and stop t he Z-series.

12 SECTION 5: OPERATION BEFORE OPERA TING 1. Study thi s manual c arefully. It has been provide d to help y ou safely operate an d maintai n this uni t. 2. Familiar ize yours elf with a ll inst ruments and co ntrols. 3. Fill the fu el tank accordi ng to the MA INTENTANCE sec tion.
13 1. Sit in th e seat of th e tractor fa cing forwar d with yo ur feet str addling th e control to wer. 2. Push the chok e lever to the fu ll choke p ositio n (all the way towa rd the front of the tr actor). 3. Push the throttl e lever to the fast (rabbit) posi tion (all the way toward the front of the tractor ).
14 QUICK REFERENCE CHART The Z-series c an turn with a zero radius . The Z-series uses t he rear tires to tur n. When turning w ith a zero radius , the rear tire s are used as the pivot po int. A conventi onal tractor can ma ke a circle bu t it needs a turning radi us, usuall y based on the distance betwe en the front and rear wheels.
15 MO WING For best res ults, consid er the fol lowing rec ommendati ons: • Mow the first two laps with the discha rge poin ting tow ard the c enter. • Mow the next two laps with th e discharge poi nting outside (aw ay from center) for a balanc ed cut and improved app earance .
16 WARN ING: Th e hydraulic r elief lever s are near to e ngine parts t hat can be HOT . To avoid in jury, wait until engine pa rts have cool ed before disengag ing. 1. Positio n the Z- series on a flat and level surfac e. 2. Engag e the parkin g brake .

18 7. Pull up on the con trol tower c over and s lide up a nd over the c ontrol tower. 8. Remove both s afety switches fro m their respecti ve holders by squ eezing toge ther on the retaini ng clips while gent ly pus hing upw ard unt il the swi tches c lear t he bracke ts.
19 16. Rem ove quarter i nch by sev en inch p ins from top and bottom holes . 17. Se t parking b rake and start the engin e (set th rottle at f ull spee d). Make sur e that the P TO is off. 18. Rota te rods (leng then or shor ten) to bri ng each hyd rostat to neutral.

21 SECTION 8: MAINTENANCE ENGINE COMP ARTMENT The engine is loca ted behind the ope rator seat. FUEL T ANK The fuel tank f iller cap is lo cated on the l eft-rear fender p anel. Take t he fuel cap off b y unscrewin g. Fill the gas tank from this po int.
22 ADDING HYDRA ULIC OIL WARN ING: N ever overfi ll the hydrauli c units. Damag e can result if the oi l level is not within the operatin g range. Note: When a dding hydra ulic oil, do so in sma ll quantit ies and rec heck the oil lev el before add ing more.
23 REPLA CIN G THE HEAD LAMP BULB 1. Remove the ignitio n key from i gnition swi tch. 2. Detach the bottom of th e rubber boot cover on the drive hand les. 3. Slide th e boot cov er all the w ay up (tow ard the dri ve handles ) to access t he drive ha ndle bolts .
24 Warning: Wh en remov ing the cables from the battery follow order of t he steps to avo id a short between the wrenc h and the fra me. REMO VING THE BA TTER Y 1. Remove the negati ve (black) cable. 2. R emove t he posit ive (re d) cabl e. 3. Unscrew the two wing nuts from the battery rods.
25 SECTION 9: MOWER DECKS The mower d eck must be level h orizontall y (side-to-s ide and fr ont-to-back ) for even cutting. CHECKING THE LEVEL OF THE MO WER DECK - Side to side - Fr ont to Back Figure 19 1. Check the rear ti res pressu re for proper infla tion and track ing.

Remove the be lt from clutch below the engi ne in the rear of the unit. 6. Push the deck as sembly forwar d to disconnect the ret aining arms fro m the deck.

Turn the th readed link the appr opriate dis tance dow n. • Every 1/2 turn =1/ 32” (.03125 ”) • Exampl e: If the front m easurement i s 4.625” the th readed link shoul d be turned 2 full turns (1/8” or 0. 125”) down. 3. Reconnec t the hange r links to the han ger brackets and the r etaining arms to the tracto r.
28 12. Turn th e pulley co untercloc kwise un til the belt i s complete ly off of th e pulley. 13. Locat e the clutch pulley. It is loc ated in the rear of the tractor, below the muff ler. (See Figure 25) 14. Rem ove the be lt from th e clutch pulley.

30 10. Rep eat Step 7 a nd Step 8 f or the other side of th e mower de ck. 11. From th e rear, atta ch the bel t around t he clutch pu lley. 12. En gage tensi on arm b y moving i t into th e bracket t o maint ain belt t ension. 13. Rep lace belt c overs.
31 4. Roll the drive belt down off of the le ft drive pulley. Now, role the dr ive belt down off of the right drive pulley . 5. Remove the driv e belt from the engine pul ley. 6. Now that th e belt is slack , carefully pul l the belt up and over the right hy drostatic cool ing fan.
