EAU00027 INSTRUMENT AND CONTROL FUNCTIONS 3 3-1 EAU00029 Main switch/steering lock The main switch/steering lock con- trols the ignition and lighting systems, and is used to lock the steering. The various positions are described below. EAU00036 ON All electrical systems are supplied with power, and the engine can be started.

To engage the clutch, release the lever. The lever should be pulled rapidly and released slowly for smooth clutch operation.

Quickly turn the fuel cock lever to this posi- tion if you run out of fuel while riding, otherwise the engine may stall and will have to be primed (see “PRI”).

Raise the side- stand or lower it with your foot while holding the motorcycle upright. NOTE: The built-in sidestand switch is part of the ignition circuit cut-off system, which cuts the ignition in certain situ- ations.

PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REP AIR 6 6-8 To install a spark plug 1. Measure the spark plug gap with a wire thickness gauge and, if necessary, adjust the gap to specification. 2. Clean the surface of the spark plug gasket and its mating sur- face, and then wipe off any grime from the spark plug threads.
6-9 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REP AIR 6 NOTE: If a torque wrench is not available when installing a spark plug, a good estimate of the correct torque is 1/4–1/2 turn past finger tight. However, the spark plug should be tightened to the specified torque as soon as possible.

If oil is leaking, immediately turn the engine off and check for the cause. 10. Turn the engine off, and then check the oil level and correct it if necessary.

If the center tread depth reaches the specified limit, if the tire has a nail or glass fragments in it, or if the sidewall is cracked, have a Yamaha dealer replace the tire imme- diately.

Keep in mind that the battery tends to dis- charge more quickly if the motorcycle is equipped with optional electrical accessories.

If the motorcycle will not be used for more than one month, remove the battery, fully charge it, and then place it in a cool, dry place. 2. Any problem in the fuel, compression, or ignition systems, for example, can cause poor starting and loss of power.
