You shoul d give the right-of-way to any vessels shown in white area (you are the Give-Way vesse l).

This feature permits the engine to be started only w hen it is in neutral .

EMU26180 Remote control The remote control lever actuates both the shifter and the throttle. The electrical switches are mounted on the remote co ntrol box.
Basic components 13 EMU26190 Remote control lever Moving the lev er forward from the neutral po- sition engages forward gear. Pulling the leve r back from neutral engages reverse. The en- gine will c ontinue to run at idle until the lever is moved about 3 5 ° (a detent c an be felt).
Basic components 14 NOTE: The neutral throttle lever will operate only when the rem ote control lever is i n neutral. The remote control lever will operate only when the neutral throttle le ver is in the closed position.
Basic components 15 When constant speed is desired, tighten the adjuster to maintain the de sired throttle set- ting. EMU25990 Engine stop lanyard switch The lock plate must be attached to the engine stop switch for the engine to run. The lanyard should be attache d to a secure pl ace on the operator ’ s clothing, or arm or leg.
Basic components 16 With the main switch i n the “” (start) po- sition, the starter motor turns to start the en- gine. When the ke y is released, it returns automatically to the “” (on) position.
Basic components 17 NOTE: For instructions on using the power trim and tilt switch, see page 36. EMU26161 Power tr im and ti lt switche s (twin binnacle type) The power trim and tilt system adjusts the out- board motor angle in relation to the transom.
Basic components 18 EMU26340 Tilt support lever for power trim and tilt or hydro tilt model To keep the outbo ard motor in the tilted up po- sition, lock the tilt support leve r to the clamp bracket. EMU26382 Top cowling loc k lever (pull up type) To remove the engine top cowling, pull up the lock lever(s) a nd lift off the cowling.
Basic components 19 NOTE: The water separator and engine trouble warn- ing indicators only operate whe n the engine is equipped with the appropriate functio ns. EMU26521 Low oil pressu re warning indic ator If oil pressure drops too low, the warning indi- cator will start to b link.
Basic components 20 NOTE: After the main switch is first turned on, all seg- ments o f the display come on as a test. After a few seconds, the gaug e will change to nor- mal operation. Watch th e gauge when turning on the main swi tch to make sure all seg ments come on.

Basic components 25 NOTE: If the two engines ’ sp eeds are not synchro - nized while cruising, they can be synchro - nized by adjusting trim angl e or throttle. EMU26791 Water separator warning indicator This indicator wil l blink when water has accu - mulated in the water sepa rator.
Basic components 26 Should the overheat warning system of one engine activate, the engine will slow d own and the buzzer will sound. This will cause the other engine to s low down and the buzzer to sound. To switch off the warning activation on the engine not affected by o verheating, turn off the main switch of the eng ine overheating.
Operation 27 EMU26901 Installation CAUTION: ECM00110 Incorrect engine height or o bstructions to smooth water flow (such as the design or condition of the boat, or accessories such as transom ladders or depth finder tr ans- ducers) can create airborne water spray while the boat is cr uising.
Operation 28 EMU26930 Mounting height (boat bottom) To run your boat at optimum efficiency, the water resistance (drag) of the boat and out- board motor must be made as little as possi- ble. The mounting height of the outboard motor greatly affec ts the water resistance.
Operation 29 EMU27102 Preoperation checks W ARNING EWM00080 If any item in the preoperation check is not working properly, have it inspected and repaired before operating the outboard motor. Otherwise an accident could occur. CAUTION: ECM00120 Do not start the engine out of water.
Operation 30 3. Securely cl ose the cap after filling the tank. Wipe up any spilled fue l. EMU27270 Ring Free Fue l Additiv e Gasoline is a precis e blend of many different substances, each chosen to give certain c har- acteristics.
Operation 31 NOTE: The start-in-gear protection device prevents the engine from starti ng except when in neu- tral. 2. Attach the engine stop switch lanyard to a secure place on you r clothing, or your arm or leg. Then install the lock plate on the other end of the lanyard into the en- gine stop switch.
Operation 32 4. Turn the main s witch to “” (start), and hold it for a maximum of 5 s econds. 5. Immediately after the engine starts, re- lease the main switc h to return it to “” (on). CAUTION: ECM00191 ● Never turn the main switch to “” (start) while the engine is running.
Operation 33 hole is blocked. Consult your Yamaha dealer if the problem cannot be located and corrected. ● If the cooling passage is frozen, it may take awhile for water to start flowing out of the pilot hole. EMU27740 Shifting W ARNING EWM00180 Before shifting, make sure there are no swimmers or obstacles in the water near you.
Operation 34 Remote control models Pull up the neutral interlock trig ger (if equipped) and move the remote control leve r quickly and firmly from neu tral to reverse. EMU27820 Stopping engine Before stopping the engine, first let it cool o ff for a few minutes at idle or low speed.

W ARNING EWM00740 Excessive trim for the operating condi- tions (either trim up or trim down) can cause boat instability and can make steer- ing the boat more difficult.
Operation 36 EMU27911 Adjusting boat trim When the boat is on plane, a bow-up attitude results in less drag, greater stability and effi- ciency. This is generally w hen the keel line of the boat is up about 3 to 5 degrees. With the bow up, the boat may have a greater tenden- cy to steer to one side or the other.
Operation 37 W ARNING EWM00250 Leaking fuel is a fire hazard. If ther e is a fuel joint on t he outboard motor, discon- nect the fuel line or close the fuel cock if the engine will be tilted for more than a few minutes.

Run the engine and che ck the filter and lines for leaks. NOTE: If any water is in the fuel, the red ring in the fuel filter unit w ill float.
Maintenance 53 2. Prepare a suitable c ontainer that holds a larger amount than the engine oil capaci- ty. Loosen and remove the drain s crew while holdi ng the container u nder the drain hole. Then remove the oil filler cap. Let the oil drain co mpletely.
Maintenance 54 7. Dispose of used oil acc ording to local regulations. NOTE: ● For more information on the disposal of used oil, consult your Yamaha dealer. ● Change the oil mo re often when operating the engine under adverse conditions such as extended trolling.
Maintenance 55 5. Check that the tilt rod and trim rods are free of corrosion or other flaws. 6. Activate the tilt-down switch until the trim rods have retracte d completely i nto the cylinders. 7. Activate the trim-up switch until the tilt rod is fully extended.
Maintenance 56 ● Check the propel ler shaft oil seal for dam- age. NOTE: If the shear pin equipped: it is des igned to break if the propeller hits a hard underwater obstacle to help protect the propeller and drive mechanism. The prope ller will then spin freely on the shaft.
Maintenance 57 NOTE: If the propeller nut does not align w ith the pro- peller shaft hole af ter tightening to the speci- fied torque, tighten the nut further to align it with the hole. Batteries also generate explosive hydr o- gen gas; therefore, you should always fol- low these preventive measures: ● Charge batteries in a well-ventilated ar- ea.
Maintenance 60 Connect the RED battery cable to the POSI- TIVE (+) terminal first. Then conn ect the BLACK battery cable to the NEGATIVE (-) ter- minal. Connecting an acce ssory battery (optional) 1. Remove the acc essory battery coupler cover from the outboard motor.
