EMU26180 Remote control The remote control lever actuates both the shifter and the throttle. The electrical switches are mounted on the remote co ntrol box.
Basic components 13 EMU26190 Remote control lever Moving the lev er forward from the neutral po - sition engages forward gear. Pulling the leve r back from neutral engages reverse. The en- gine will c ontinue to run at idle until the lever is moved about 3 5 ° (a detent can be felt).
Basic components 14 To increase resistance, turn the adjus ter clockwise. To decreas e resistance, turn the adjuster counterclockw ise. W ARNING EWM00030 Do not overtighten the friction adjuster. If there is too much resistance, it could be difficult to move throttle lever or grip, which could result in an accident.
Basic components 15 EMU26141 Power tr im and tilt s witch on r emote control or t iller hand le The power trim and tilt system adjusts the out- board motor angle in relation to the transom. Pressing the sw itch “” (up) trims the out- board motor up, then tilts it up.

Basic components 19 EMU26620 Trim met er (di gital t ype) This meter show s the trim angle of your out- board motor. NOTE: ● Memorize the trim angles that work best f or your boat u nder different conditions. Adjust the trim angle to the desired using the pow- er trim and tilt switch.
Basic components 20 EMU26700 Clock Press the “” (mode) button re peatedly until the indicato r on the face of the gauge points to “” (time). To set the clock, be sure the gauge is in the “” (time) mode. Press the “” (set) button; the hour display will begin blinking.
Basic components 21 CAUTION: ECM00870 Get back to the port soon if a warning de- vice has activated. For c harging the bat- tery, consult your Yamaha dealer. EMU26801 Warning system CAUTION: ECM00090 Do not continue to operate the engine if a warning device has activated.
Basic components 22 ● The engine sp eed will automatically de - crease to about 2000 r/min. ● The low oi l pressure warning indicator will light. ● The buzzer will soun d. If the warning system ha s activated, stop the engine as s oon as it is safe to do so.
Operation 23 EMU26901 Installation CAUTION: ECM00110 Incorrect engine height or o bstructions to smooth water flow (such as the design or condition of the boat, or accessories such as transom ladders or depth finder tr ans- ducers) can create airborne water spray while the boat is cr uising.
Operation 24 tends to occur, thus reducing the propulsion; and if the propeller tips cut the air, the engine speed will rise ab normally and ca use the en- gine to overheat. If the mounting height is too low, the water resi stance will increase and thereby reduce en gine efficiency.
Operation 25 ● Check fuel li ne connections to be s ure they are tight (if equipped Yamaha fuel tank or boat tank). ● Be sure the fuel tank is positioned on a se- cure, flat surface, and t hat the fuel line is not twisted or flattened, or likely to contact sharp objects (if equipped Yamaha fuel tank or boat tank).
Operation 26 EMU27270 Ring Free Fue l Additive Gasoline is a precis e blend of many different substances, each chosen to give certain char- acteristics. Gasol ine blends hav e been changing in rec ent years in response to con- cerns about pollution and resulting emiss ions regulations.
Operation 27 2. Attach the engine stop switch lanyard to a secure place on you r clothing, or your arm or leg. Then install the lock plate on the other end of the lanyard into the en- gine stop switch. A damaged insulator could allow exter nal sparks, which could lead to explosion or fire.
Maintenance 45 When fitting the plug, always cle an the gasket surface and use a new gas ket. Wipe off any dirt from the threads and screw in the spark plug to the correct torque. NOTE: If a torque-wrench is no t available w hen you are fitting a spark plug, a good es timate of the correct torque is 1/4 to 1/2 a turn past finger- tight.
Maintenance 46 ● If you have any question about pr operly doing this procedure, consult your Yamaha dealer. ● Do not perform this procedure on a hot or running engine. Allow the engine to cool. ● There will be f uel in the fuel filt er. Keep away from sparks, cigarettes, flames or other sources of ignition.
Maintenance 47 CAUTION: ECM00490 This procedure must be performed while the outboard motor is in the water. A flush- ing attachment or test tank can be used.
Maintenance 48 3. Put a new gas ket on the oil drain s crew. Apply a light coat of oil to the gasket and install the drain screw. NOTE: If a torque wrench is not available when you are installing the drai n screw, fi nger tighten the screw just until the gasket com es into con- tact with the surface of the drain hole.
Maintenance 49 7. Dispose of used oil acc ording to local regulations. NOTE: ● For more information on the disposal of used oil, consult your Yamaha dealer. ● Change the oil mo re often when operating the engine under adverse conditions such as extended trolling.
Maintenance 50 NOTE: Consult your Yamaha dealer if any operation is abnormal. EMU29171 Checking propeller W ARNING EWM00321 You could be seriously injured if the en- gine accidentally starts when you are near the propeller. ● Before inspecting, removing, or install- ing the propeller, remove the spark plug caps from the spark plugs.
Maintenance 51 EMU29193 Removing the propel ler 1. Straighten the cotter pin and pull it out us- ing a pair of pliers. 2. Remove the propeller nut, washer, and spacer (if equipped).
Maintenance 52 NOTE: If the magnetic gear oil drain screw equipped: remove all metal particles from the screw be- fore installing it. 4. Remove the oi l level plug to a llow the oil to drain completely. CAUTION: ECM00710 Inspect the used oil after it has been drained.

Maintenance 54 2. Always kee p the battery in a good state of charge. Installing a voltmeter will help you monitor your battery. If you will not use the boat for a mo nth or more, remove the battery from the boat a nd store it in a cool, dark pla ce. Completely recharge the battery before using it.

Trouble Recovery 61 ● Avoid accidentally pulling the lanyard during normal operation. Loss of engine power means the loss of most steering control. Also, without engine power, the boat could slow rapidly. This could cause people and objects in the boat to be thrown forward.
Trouble Recovery 62 EMU29760 Treatment of submerged motor If the outboard motor is submerged, i mmedi- ately take it to a Yamaha dealer. Otherwise some corrosion may begin almost immedia te- ly.
