4A D S L X5v User’s Gui de Overview The X5v is an ADSL modem, a gateway/router, and a VoIP telephone adapter, all contained in one device. The ADSL modem gives you a connection to the Internet through your Internet service provider. The gateway/ro uter provides an interface between the Internet and your own local network.

If you have them, it will make installation a little faster and easier, but don’t wo rry if you don’t have them.

All calls that you dial from the phone attached to the X5v will be VoIP calls so you do not need t o dial # fi rst. I f your comp uter alre ady has firew all software installed: If you have third-party firewall software installed on your computer, such as the Windows XP firewall, you may need to deactivate it before opening por ts by setti ng up a virtual server or a DMZ.

You may need these settings if your Service Provider requires you to make changes or if you want to adjust your caller ID, VoIP ring and dial tone, or VoIP Only Mode.

The X5v is designed so that the basic setup settings are suffici ent for most users. The informat ion in t his chapt er applies t o you if: • Your provider is using 1483 encapsulation.

If your pr ovider is using 1483 Bridged or Routed IP encapsulation, however, you have the option of using a static IP address.

58 ADSL X5v User’s Guide Hacker Log Whenever the firewall prevent s a packet from being delivered because of a perceived s ecurity threat, the Hacker Log feature keeps track. You have the option of specifying which types of messages are logged in and displayed.

Drawing from these groups, or databases, you can then create and apply certain inbound and outbound policies and restrict Internet traffic.
