Printing Methods 24 2 Duplex printing 2 The supplied printer drivers for Windows ® 2000 or greater and Mac OS X 10.3.9 or greater all enable duplex printing. For more informat ion about how to choose the settings, see the Help text in the printer driver.

You can choose one of the preset waterma rks, or you can use a bitmap file or text that you have created. When you use a bitmap file as a watermark, you ca n change the size of the watermark and put it anywhere you like on the page.

Control Panel 76 4 LED Printer status Sleep mode The printer is in sleep mo de. Pressing Go wakes up the p rinter from sleep mode to ready mode. Ready to print The printer is ready to pr int. Warming up The printer is warming up. The Status LED will turn on for 1 second and off for 1 second.
Control Panel 77 4 Receiving data The printer is either re ceiving data from the computer , process ing data in memory or printing the data. The Status LED will turn on for 0.5 seco nds and off for 0.5 seconds. Cooling down The printer is cooling down .
Control Panel 78 4 Drum life will end soon The drum unit is near the end of its lif e. We recommend th at you get a new drum unit to replace the current on e. See Replacing the drum unit on pa ge 101. The Drum LED will turn on for 2 seconds and off for 3 seconds.

If you see the service call indication shown above, turn off the power switch, and then turn it back on and try to print again.

Make a note of the indication, referring to the table on page 81, and report the error status to your dealer or Brother Customer Service. Options 89 5 SO-DIMM (memory module) 5 For HL-5340D The HL-5340D printer has 16 MB of standard memory and one slot for optional memory expan sion. You can expand the memory up to 528 MB by insta lling dual in-line memory modules (SO-DIMMs).
Options 90 5 Installing extra memory 5 a Turn off the printer power switch, and th en unplug the printer. Disconnect the interface cable from the printer. IMPORTANT Be sure to turn off the printer power switch before you in stall or remove the DIMM. b Remove the DIMM cover.
Options 91 5 e Put the DIMM cover back on . f Reconnect the interface cable to your printer. Plug th e printer back in, and then turn o n the power switch. Note To make sure that you have installed the DIMM properly, you can print the printer settings page that shows the current memory si ze.
92 6 6 Routine Ma intenance6 You will need to replace certain parts and clean the printer regularly. Replacing the consumable items 6 You will need to repla ce the consumable ite ms when the machine indicates tha t the life of the consu mable is over.
Routine Maintenance 93 6 Toner cartridge 6 The life of the original to ner cartridge that came with the printer may be either a standard 1 or high yield toner cartridge 2 , and depends on the model a nd country you bought the printer in. 1 Standard toner cartridges print approximately 3 ,000 A4 or Letter-size single-sided pag es.
Routine Maintenance 94 6 Replace Toner message 6 The printer will stop printing un til you replace the toner cartridge with a new one. Replacing the toner cartridge 6 Note • To ensure high quality printing, we recommend that you use only genuine Brother toner cartridges.
Routine Maintenance 95 6 b Take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. IMPORTANT We recommend that you put the drum unit and toner cartridg e assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.
Routine Maintenance 96 6 WARNING DO NOT put a toner cartridge into a fire. It could explode, resulting in injuries. Use neutral detergents when cleaning the printer.
