1-1 1. PRINCIPLE OF THE AUT OPILOT 1.1 Principle of A utopilot An autopilot is an auto mat ic device f or steering a vessel and maintaining its heading in an int ended direction.

3-1 3. STEERING MODES The NA Vpilot-500 system is capable of six primary steering modes: STBY (manual), AUT O, NA V , TURN, REMOTE (FU and NFU) and DODGE. 3.1 STBY Mode After turning on the power , the equipment goes to the STBY mode. This is a manual st eering mode.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-2 3.2 A U T O Mode 3.2.1 Using the A UT O mode The NA Vpilot-500’s AUTO mode steers the boat autom at ically on a course set by the operator . Note: The AUTO mode will not com pensat e f or the effects o f wind or tide, w hich can push you off course in the ath wart ship direction.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-3 3.2.2 A D V ANCED A UTO mode AUTO mode will maintain a set course, but your vessel’s course may be shift ed by the effects of current or wind. ADV ANCED AUT O mode m aintains a set course while compensat ing for the effects of wind and tide.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-4 3.3 NA V Mode 3.3.1 S t arting the NA V mode If a dest inat ion waypoint is set on a GPS / Plotter , t he NA Vpilot -500 can receive this inf orm ation and guide t he boat to the dest ination waypoint as determ ined by the plotter .

ST EERING MODE 3-5 3.3.2 Selecting sailing method of NA V mode W hen your v essel goes off course while navigat i ng between the ori gin (previous waypoint) and your current dest inat ion waypoin t because of a remot e control command, et c. the NA V mode uses one of t w o m et hods to get back on course: COURSE or XTE.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-6 3.3.3 Sw itching wa y p oint W hen you arrive at a waypoint on a route while in the NA V mode, you can switch to the next waypoi nt automat ically or manually . The AUT O setting will automat ically switch to the ne xt destination way point when yo ur boat is within the arrival alarm area (set on the plotter).
3. ST EERING MODE 3-7 3.3.4 Selecting the boat’s steering behavior af ter arriving at your destination w aypoint The “Fishing m ode” can be enabled and set up control your boat’s steering behavior after it reaches t he last waypoint in a route.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-8 3.4 TURN Mode The [TURN] key provides the various turning m otions depe ndi ng on the m ode in use. There are five different turn type; 180º or 360º t urns (for AUTO mode only), ORBIT , SPIRAL and FIGURE EI GHT . All turn type are avail able i n clock wise and counterclockwise direct ion.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-9 180º TURN (for A U T O mode on l y ) This function changes t he current set course by 180º i n t he opposit e direct ion. After the 180º turn completely , the message “TURN CO MPLETE D” ap pears. Return to the AUTO mode by pressing the cour se control knob.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-10 ORBIT W hen ORBIT is enabled, your boat will orbit around t he boat’s current position. If ORBIT is enabled while in t he NA V mode, the boat orbits around the (last) waypoint. This function requires a pl otter or GPS be connected.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-1 1 5. Rotate the course control knob t o select " ◄ ORBIT" or " ORBIT ► ", and then press it. The message “ST AR T TO T URN BY FISHING M ODE” appears, and the boat runs for the distance se t at step 3, and then sta rts makin g an orbit similar to the figure on the previous pa ge.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-12 SPIRAL The boat will spiral in t he direct ion of current heading (ST BY), set course (AUTO) or the course to the next waypoint (NA V) that was active at the m oment that the SPI RAL mode is selected. The radius of t he “spiral” can be set in the menu.
3. ST EERING MODE 3-13 5. Press the [T URN] key to show the TURN menu. 6. Rotate the course control knob t o choose “RADIUS O F O RBIT ”, and then press it. The current value is circumscribed w ith a double rectangle. 7. Rotate the course control knob t o set the spiral speed.
3. ST EERING MODES 3-14 FIGURE E IGHT After the boat has traveled the dist ance "d" set on the m enu, it starts turning in a figure eight pat tern, autom atically returni ng t o the position where t he figure eight mode was initiated. The “d” is set on menu as RADIUS OF ORBI T .

ST EERING MODE 3-15 Naviga ting to T LL point W hen TLL (T arget Lat itude and Longit ud e) data is input f r om a radar or echo sounder connected in th e STBY , AUT O or NA V m ode, the TURN menu appears. Then, you m ay choose how to progress towards that position, from ORBIT (port direction, starboard direct ion) or FIGURE EIGHT .
3. ST EERING MODES 3-16 3.5 REMOTE Mode Four types of opt ional remote controllers m ay be connected to the NA Vpilot-500. These are used to oper ate the Navpilot - 50 0 fr om a rem ote location. Dial t ype remote contro l ler (F AP-5551, 55 52) This remote controller can onl y be used when in the STBY , AUT O or NA V m ode.

ST EERING MODE 3-17 The FU is one of auto s teering modes, which outputs an absolu te value determined with the course control knob to driv e the rudder , thus changing the ship’ s course at a given r ate of change towards a set point.. 2. Rotate the dial on the re mot e cont roller to set the rudder angle.

W hen t he menu is accessed while in either the AUTO or NA V modes, only the m enu items that are most frequent ly used in those m odes are shown.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-2 4.1.1 Setting pa rameters The P ARAMETER SETUP menu sets various paramet ers f or the control of the NA Vpilot -500. 1. In the STBY mode, press the [MENU] key to open the ST BY mode menu. 2. Rotate the course control knob t o select “P ARAMETER SETUP”.

FULL-AUTO: Auto adjustment and self-learning are on. SEMI-AUTO: Auto adjustment is on, self-lear ning is off.

4. MENU OPERA TION 4-5 WEA T HER W hen the sea is rough, the boat’s heading fluct uat es to port and starboard. If the rudder is driven very oft en to maintain t he set course, the helm mechanism m ay wear out. T o prevent this, the weather adj ustment makes the NA Vpilot -500 insensit ive t o minute course deviations.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-6 Set rudder gain so that t he boat does not m ake fr equent yaw . The f igure sho wn below provides general guide lines f or setting rudder gain.
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-7 Adjusting th e sensiti vity in mon i toring the boat’s trim The NA Vpilot-500 continuall y monit ors the boat’s trim in order to keep the t r im sensitivity optimum . A lower setting is common because boat’s trim usually does not change quickly .
4. MENU OPERA TION 4-8 When towing a net W hen a boat is in tow of the fishing gear , its stern is “dragged” by the net . This causes the boat to stray f rom its intended course. T o keep t he boat on course, you need t o adj ust the trim manuall y , which can be bothersom e.

5. ALARM S 5-2 5.1.1 Selecting the alar m buzzer Y o u m ay choose the buzzer f r om which to outp ut the audio alarm as follows. Note: If “INTERNAL + EXTERNAL BUZZER” is selected, t he external buzzer sounds when turning th e NA Vpilot-500 off. 1.
