2 Introduction The Hart Scientif ic Model 9105/9107 dry-well calibrator may be used as a por - table instrument for cal ibration of tem perature probes. The 9105 operates o ver the range of –25°C and 140°C. The 9107 operates o ver the range of –45°C to 140°C.
3 Specifications and Environmental Conditions 3.1 Specifications The following table lists the specifications for this instru ment. Accuracy speci - fications are applicable for a one-year calibration interval.

5 Quick Start 5.1 Unpacking Unpack the dry-well carefully and inspect it for a ny damage that may ha ve oc - curred during shipment. If there i s shipping damage, notify t he carrier immediately .
“PO WER” switch . The dry-well will turn on and begin to heat to the pre vio usly programmed temperature set-point. The front panel LED display will indicat e the actual dry-well temperature. The 9107 is f ield switchable between 115 V and 230 V .

Po wer Entry Module (9107) - The power switch is located on the po w er entry module (PEM). The PEM also houses the fuses.The supply v oltage for the unit is indicated on the PEM. Serial Port - This D-9 connector is for interf acing the calibrator to a computer or terminal with serial RS-232 communications.

7 General Operation 7.1 Calibrator Set-Up Place the calibrator on a flat surface with at least 6 inches of free space around the instrument. Overhead clearance is required. DO NO T place under a cabinet or other structure.Plug the power cord into a grounded mains out let.
7.3 Setting the T emperature Section 8.3 expl ains in detail how t o set the temperature set -point on the cali - brator using the front panel ke ys. The procedure is summarized here. (1) Press “SET” twice to access the set-point value. (2) Press “UP” or “DOWN” to change the set-point value.

8.6 Ramp and Soak Program Menu The ramp and soak program feature allows t he user to program a number of set-points and ha ve the dry-well aut omatically c y cle between the temperat ures, holding at each for a determined length of time. The user can select one of four dif ferent cycle funct ions.

8.11.1.2 ALPHA This probe parameter refers to the a verage sensiti vity of the probe between 0 and 100°C. The value of this parameter is set at the f actory for best instrument accuracy . 8.11.1.3 DEL T A This parameter relates to th e second order nonlin earity of the sensor .

LF= OFF New linefeed setting 8.11.4 IEEE-488 Parameters The calibrator may optionally be fitted with an IEEE-488 GPIB interf ace.
8.11.5 Calibration Parameters The user has access to a number of the instrument calibration constants namely CTO, B0, and BG. These v alues are set at the factory and must not be altered. The correct values are important to th e accurac y and p roper and safe operation of the calibrator .
9 Digital Communication Interface The dry-well calibrator is capable of communicating with and being controlled by other equipment through the digital interface. T wo types of digital interface are av ailable — the RS-232 serial interface and the IEEE-488 GPIB interface.

9.1.3 Serial Operation Once the cable has been attached and the interface set up properly the control - ler will immediately begin transmitting temperature readings at the pro - grammed rate. The serial communi cations uses 8 data bits, one stop bit, and no parity .
9.3 Interface Commands The various commands for accessing the ca librator functions via the digital in - terfaces are listed in this section (see T able 2 starting on page 47). These com - mands are used with both the RS-232 serial interf ace and the IEEE-488 GPIB interface.

10 T est Probe Calibration For optimum accurac y and stability , allow the calibrator to w arm up f or 10 minutes after power -up and then allow adequate stabilization time after reach - ing the set-point t emperature. After complet ing calibration, all ow the block to cool before switching the po wer off.

10.2.1 V ertical Gradient There is a temperature gradient verti cally in the test well. The heater has been applied to the bl ock in such a way as t o compensate for nominal heat losses out of the top of the dry-well and minimize v ertical temperature gradients.
11 Calibration Procedure 11.1 Calibration Procedure Calibration of thi s instrument should be performed at re gularly scheduled inter - vals by qualif ied authorized personnel in accordance with your company’ s pol - icy . Follo wing is the recommended p rocedure for calibrating this instrument.

12 Maintenance • The calibration instrument has been designed with the utmost care. Ease of operation and simplicity of maintenance have been a central theme in the product development. Therefore, with proper care the instrument should require very little maintenance.
• The ov er-temperature cut-out should be checked ev ery 6 months to see that it is working properly . In order to check the user selected cut-out, fol - low the controller directions (Section 8.2) for setting the cut-out. Both the manual and the auto reset option of the cut-out should be check ed.
13 T roubleshooting 13.1 T roubleshooting In the e vent that the dr y-well appears t o function abnormally , this section ma y help to find and solv e the problem. Sev eral possible prob lem condi - tions are described along with likely causes and solutions.
