12 Remote Contr oller Notes: • If the remote control ler doesn’t w ork reliably , try replacing the batteries. • Don’t mix ne w and old batteries or dif ferent types of batteries. • If you intend not to use the remote controller for a long time, remove the batteries to prevent damage from leakage or corrosion.

When Using an RI Dock: • Connect the RI Dock to the T APE IN or GAME/TV IN L/R jacks. • Set the RI Dock’ s RI MODE switch to HDD or HDD/DOCK. • Set the A V receiv er’ s Input Display to DOCK (see page 48).
18 About Home Theater Thanks to the A V recei ver’ s superb capabilities, you can enjoy surround sound wi th a real sense of movement in your own home—just lik e being in a movie theater or concert hall. With D VDs you can enjoy DTS and Dolb y Digital.
19 Connecting the A V Receiver • Before making an y A V conne ctions, read the manuals supplied with your other A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’v e completed and double-checked all A V connections.
20 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Speaker Configurat ion For the best surround sound e xperience, you should con- nect sev en speakers and a power ed subwoofer . The following tabl e indicates the channels you should use depending on the numb er of speakers that you ha ve.
21 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Speaker Connectio n Precaution s Read the following before connecting your speak ers: • North American model s: Only connect speakers with an impedance of 6 ohms or higher .
22 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued The FR ONT SPEAKERS L/R and SURR B A CK SPEAKERS L/R terminal posts can be used with front speakers and surround back speakers respecti vely , or bi- amped to provide separate tw eeter and woofer feeds for a pair of front speake rs that support bi-amping, pro- viding improve d bass and treble performance.
23 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop ante nna, and how to connect commercially a vailable outd oor FM and AM antennas. The A V recei ver wo n’t pick up an y radio signals without any an tenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .
24 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Connecting an Outdoo r FM Antenna If you cannot achie ve good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a co mmercially a vailable out- door FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, but usable results can sometimes be obta i ned when installed in an attic or loft.

29 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Hooking Up the Multichannel D VD Input If your D VD player supports multichannel audio formats su ch as DVD- Audio or SA CD, and it has a multichannel analog audio output, you can c onnect it to the A V recei v er’ s multichannel D VD input.

35 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued About HDMI Designed to meet the demands of digita l TV , HDMI (High Definition Mul timedia Interf ace) is a ne w digital interface standard for connecting TVs, projectors, D VD players, set-top boxes, and other video components.

43 Fir st Time Setup This section explains the settings that you need to make before using the A V receiv er for the v ery first time. Carry out the settings for th e A V receiv er b y using the Onscreen Setup Menu. ■ Menus f o r First Time Setup Using the Onscreen Setup Men us 1 Press the [Receive r] button f ol- lowed b y the [Setup] button.
44 First Time Setup —Contin ued If the impedance of any speaker is 4 ohms or more b ut less than 6, set the minimum speaker impedance to 4 ohms (not North Am erican model). If you’ ve connected your front speakers to th e FR ONT SPEAKERS and SURR BA CK SPEAKERS terminal posts for bi-amping, you must change the Speak ers T ype setting.
45 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect your TV to the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT , set the H DMI Monitor setting to No so that the onscreen setup menus are displayed and composite video and S-V ideo sources are upcon verted* and output by the COM PONENT VIDE O OUT .
46 First Time Setup —Contin ued HDMI Input Setup If you connect a video component to HDMI IN, you must assign that input to an input selector . For example, if you connect your D VD player to HDMI IN 1, you must assign HDMI IN 1 to the D VD input selector .
47 First Time Setup —Continued Component Video Setup If you connect to a COMPONENT VIDEO IN, you must assign it to an input selector . For example, if you connect your D VD player to COMPONENT IN 3, you should assign it to the D VD input selector .
48 First Time Setup —Contin ued If you connect an -capable Onkyo MiniDisc recorder , CD recorder , or RI Dock to the T APE IN/OUT or GAME/TV IN jacks, for to work properly , you must change this se tting. This setting can only be changed on the A V recei ver.
49 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect a component to a digital input jack, you must assign that jack to an i nput selector . For e xample, if you connect your CD player to the OPTICAL IN2 jack, you should assign that jack to the CD input selector .
50 First Time Setup —Contin ued Y ou must specify the TV system used in your area. Note: This procedure can also be perform ed on the A V receiv er by using its [Setup] b utton, arrow b uttons, and [Enter] button. TV Format Setup (not North American model) 1 Press the [Receiver] button fol- lowed by the [Setup] button.
51 First Time Setup —Continued Y ou must specify the AM frequency step used in your area. Note that when this setting is c hanged, all radio presets are deleted. Note: • This procedure can also be performed on the A V recei ver by using its [Setup] button, arro w buttons, and [Enter] button.
52 First Time Setup —Contin ued W ith the supplied speaker setup microphone, the Audyssey MultEQ XT function ca n measure the number of speakers connected, their sizes, crosso ver frequencies, and the distance from each speak er to the listening posi- tion and calculate the optimal speaker settings for your listening en vironment automatically .
53 First Time Setup —Continued 1 T urn on the A V receiver a nd the connected TV . On the TV , select the input to which the A V rec eiv er is connected. 2 Put the speaker setup micro- phone at measurement point 1 (page 52), and connect it to the Setup Mic jack.
54 First Time Setup —Contin ued Notes : • When the automat ic speaker setup is comple te, the Equalizer Settings (page 93) will be set to “ Audyssey . ” • Y ou can cancel the automa tic speaker setup at any point in this procedure si mply by disconnecting the setup microphone.

58 Basic Oper ations —Continued The multichannel D VD input is for connecting a compo- nent with a 7.1-channel anal og audio output, such as a D VD-Audio or SA CD-capable DVD player , or an MPEG decoder .
59 Basic Operations —Continued Y ou can adjust the brightness of the display . Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiver . Tip: Y ou can specify how much the output is muted with the Muting Le vel setting (see page 103). W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiv er to turn off aut omatically after a specif ied period.
60 Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vorite stations as presets for quick selection. Listening to the Radio T uning into Radio Stations ■ Auto T uni ng Mode When tuned into a station, the T UNED indicator appears.

Selecting XM Satel lite Radio Signing Up for XM Satellite Radio Once you ha ve installed th e XM Mini-T uner and Home Dock, you are ready to subscr ibe to XM Satellite Radio.

82 Using the Listening Modes —Continued The A V receiver’ s listening modes can transform your listening room into a movie th eater or concert hall, with high fidelity and stunning surround sound. Direct In this mode, audio from the input source is output directly with minima l proces sing, providing high-f idel- ity reproduction.
83 Using the Listening Modes —Continued DTS-ES Matrix This mode is for use with DTS-ES Matrix soundtracks, which use a matrix-encoded back-channel for 6.1/7.1- channel playback. Use it with D VDs that bear th e DTS- ES logo, especial ly those with a DTS-ES Matrix soundtrack.
84 Using the Listening Modes —Continued Onkyo Original DSP Modes Mono Movie This mode is suitable fo r old movies and other mono sources. The center speak er outputs the sou nd as it is, while rev erb is applied to the sound output by the other speakers, gi ving presence to ev en mono material.
85 Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the selected input source to a component with re cording ca pability , and how to record aud io and video from differen t sources. Notes: • The surround sound and D SP listening modes cannot be recorded.
86 Adv anced Operations W ith the Late Night function, you can reduce the dynamic range of Dolby Digita l, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby T rueHD material so th at you can still hear quiet parts e ven when listening at lo w volume le vels—ideal for watching mo vies late at night when you don’t w ant to disturb anyone.

88 Adv anced Setup —Continued Some of the setti ngs in this section a re set automatic ally by the Au tomatic Speak er Se tup function (see page 52).
89 Adv anced Setup —Continued Low-P ass Filter for t he LFE Channel W ith this setting, you can specify the cutoff frequenc y of the LFE channel’ s low-pass fi lter (LPF), which can be used to filter out unw anted hum. The LPF only applies to sources that use the LFE channel.
90 Adv anced Setup —Continued Double Bass W ith the Double Bass func tion, you can boost bass out- put by feeding bass sounds fro m the front left and right channels to the subwoofer . This function can be set only if the Sub woofer setting in ste p 4 is set to Y es, and the Front setting in step 5 is set to Full Band .
91 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Dista nce Here you can specify the dist ance from each speaker to the listening position so that the sound from each speaker arri ves at the listener’ s ears as the sound designer intended.
92 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Le vel Calibration Here you can adjust the le vel of each speaker with the bui lt-in test tone so that the v olume of each spea ker is the same at the listening position. Notes: • The speakers cannot be cali brated while the output of the A V receiver is muted.
93 Adv anced Setup —Continued Equalizer Se tting Here you can adjust the EQ of individual speakers. T o set the volume of indi vidual speakers see page 92. 1 Press the [Receive r] button f ol- lowed b y the [Setup] button. The main menu appears onscreen.
94 Adv anced Setup —Continued Notes: • When the listening mode is se t to Direc t, no ef fect will be produced. • Depending on the input sour ce or listening mode, the Equalizer settings may not produce the desired ef fect.
95 Adv anced Setup —Continued Subwoofer Input Sensitivity Some DVD players output the LFE channel from their subwoofer output at 15 dB higher than normal. Y ou can change the subwoofer sensitivity to match your D VD player . Note that this sett ing only aff ects signals con- nected to the SUBW OOFER input jack of the multicha n- nel D VD input.

97 Adv anced Setup —Continued PL II x/Neo: 6 Music Mode Settings These settings provide for pl aying an y 2-channel digital source such as Dolby Digita l, o r 2-channel analog/PCM source in the Dolby PLIIx Music listening mode.
98 Adv anced Setup —Continued Y ou can assign a default list ening mode to each input source that will be selected aut omatically when you select each input source. For example, you can set the default listening mode to be used with Dolby Digital input signals.
99 Adv anced Setup —Continued Note: This procedure can also be performed on the A V receiv er by using its [ Setup] button, arro w buttons, and [Enter] butto n. IntelliV olume Y ou can set the input lev el for each input source. This is useful if some of your A V components are louder or qui- eter than others.
100 Adv anced Setup —Continued Correcting Sound and Picture Sync When using progressiv e scanning on your DVD player , you may find that the picture and sound are out of sync. W ith this setting, you can correct this by delaying the audio signals. Y ou can set it from 0 to 250 milliseconds (msec) in 5 millise cond steps.
