10 Introduction —Continued Supported Discs The RD V -1.1 supports the following discs. • Some audio CDs feature copy protection that doesn’ t conform to the official CD standard. Since these are nonstandard discs, they may not play properly in the RD V -1.
11 Introduction —Continued Video CDs The RD V -1.1 supports V ersion 1.1 and V ersion 2.0 of the V ideo CD standard. V ersion 2.0 supports PBC (Playback Control). • V ideo CD (V ersion 1.1) On the RD V -1.1, the contents of V ideo CDs that con- form to V ersion 1.
12 Introduction —Continued ■ D VD-VR D VD-VR discs contain programs, which may be subdivided into cells. They may also contain playl- ists. ■ CD CDs contain tracks. ■ MP3 MP3 discs contain MP3 tracks organized into fold- ers. ■ JPEG JPEG discs contain pictures organized into folders.
13 Introduction —Continued ■ AES/EBU: A digital audio connection format simi- lar to coaxial but found mainly on professional digital audio equipment. Balanced XLR cables are used for bet- ter noise immunity and longer cable runs. ■ CD-R (compact disc recordab le): A type of CD that can be recorded only once.
14 Introduction —Continued ■ MP3 (MPEG 1 A udio Layer 3): Popular com- pressed file format for storing digital music. ■ MPEG1 (Moving Picture Experts Group 1): The compressed digital video format used for VCDs.
15 Bef ore Use The W orldwide model has a voltage selector for compat- ibility with power systems around the w orld. Before you plug in this model, make sure that the v oltage selector is set to the correct voltage for your area. If it isn’ t, use a small screwdri ver to set it as appropriate.
16 Getting to Kno w the RD V -1.1 F or detailed information, refer to the pages in parenthesis. A Po wer switch (43) This is the main power switch. When set to OFF , the RD V -1.1 is completely shutdown. When set to ON, the RD V -1.1 can be set to On or Standby .

25 Connecting This chapter explains ho w to connect the RD V -1.1 to your other A V components. • Read the manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’v e completed all audio and video connections. Optical Digital Outputs The RD V -1.
26 Connecting —Continued Audio i.LINK i.LINK (IEEE 1394) connections can carry up to six (5.1) channels and up to 24-bit/ 192 kHz digital audio, and can be used for multichannel digital audio (D VD-V ideo, D VD-Audio, SACD) and stereo digital audio (VCD, CD, MP3).
27 Connecting —Continued The RD V -1.1 supports sev eral video input formats. The follo wing table shows what’ s output by each video output when each of the various video inputs is selected. It also sho ws whether or not the video is upconv erted to progressiv e video.

37 Connecting —Continued L. Analog Audio Connection (Dolby Digital, DTS, D VD-Audio & SA CD) To fully enjoy the multichannel audio of D VD-Audio and SA CD, you need to connect the RD V -1.1’ s 5.1/7.1- channel analog audio output to a multichannel analog audio input on an A V receiver .
38 Connecting —Continued N. Digital Connection Use an optical, coaxial, or AES/EBU digital audio cable to connect one of the RD V -1.1’ s DIGIT AL 1 (OPTICAL or CO AXIAL) or DIGIT AL 2 outputs (OPTICAL, CO AXIAL, or AES/EBU) to a corresponding digital audio input on your amp or receiv er .
39 Connecting —Continued If your TV supports progressi ve scanning, you can con- nect another video component (satellite/cable tuner , LD player , etc.) to the RD V -1.1 and it will upcon vert inter - laced video to progressiv e. This is also useful when your TV doesn’t ha ve enough video inputs to connect all of your components.
40 Connecting —Continued The RD V -1.1 has an HDMI IN socket, so you can con- nect another HDMI-compatible component, such as an AV receiver . When the video input source on the RD V -1.1 is set HDMI (see page 67), signals receiv ed by the HDMI IN are fed through to the HDMI OUT .
41 Connecting —Continued Y ou can use the following multiroom kits to control the RD V -1.1 when it’ s out of range of the remote controller: • Multiroom kits such as those made by Niles and Xan- tech. Controlling the RD V -1.1 When It’ s Out of Range If the RD V -1.

44 Initial Setup This chapter explains the settings you need to make the very first time the RD V -1.1 is turned on. The very first time you turn on the RD V -1.1, the Initial Setup menu appears onscreen. Here you need to make a fe w settings to get the RD V -1.
45 Initial Setup —Continued Notes: •Y ou can change the language of the onscreen setup menus, and specify your preferred languages for D VD menus, soundtracks, and subtitles on the Language menu (see page 82). • When a D VD doesn’t ha ve menus, soundtracks, and subtitles in different languages, its def ault language is used.
46 Basic Pla ybac k This chapter explains the RD V -1.1’ s basic playback functions. Don’t for get to turn on your TV or projector and select the video input to which the RD V -1.1 is connected. If you’ re using an A V receiv er or hi-fi amp for audio playback, turn that on as well and select the audio input to which the RD V -1.
47 Basic Playbac k —Continued This section explains ho w to start, pause, and stop play- back. Notes: • During playback, you can select chapters or tracks by using the Next [ ] and Pre vious [ ] buttons. The first press of the Previous [ ] b utton selects the beginning of the current chapter or track.
48 Basic Playbac k —Continued D VD-V ideo discs usually have a menu from which you can select titles, chapters, and other options, including soundtracks, subtitles, and audio formats (e.g., Dolby Digital or DTS). VCDs that support PBC (Playback Control) may also hav e an onscreen menu (see page 11).
49 Basic Playbac k —Continued W ith the Search function you can select chapters and titles by number . Notes: • During playback you can select chapters directly by using the number buttons. T o select chapter #2, simply press [2] and playback starts.

52 Basic Playbac k —Continued W ith slow-motion playback you can w atch a scene slowly either forw ard or backward. Notes: • There are four slow-motion speeds for D VD-V ideo/ D VD-VR and three for VCD. • Backward slo w-motion playback does not work with D VD-VR and VCD discs.
53 Basic Playbac k —Continued This section explains ho w to play MP3 tracks with the Disc Navigator . Navigating MP3 Discs 1 Load an MP3 disc (page 46). The Disc Navigator appears. Initially , the T rack list shows all of the folders at the root lev el.

57 Ad v anced Pla ybac k W ith the Zoom function you can enlarge an y part of the picture. Notes: • The Zoom function may not work with some D VDs. • The Zoom function can also be used while playback is paused or during slow-motion playback. • The Zoom function cannot be used to zoom menus.
58 Adv anced Playbac k —Continued W ith the Repeat function you can play a disc, title, chap- ter , group, track, or folder (MP3/JPEG) ov er-and-ov er again. Notes: • Repeat playback may not work with some D VD-V ideo discs. • The Repeat function can be used in combination with the Random function (see page 59).
59 Adv anced Playbac k —Continued W ith the Random function you can enjoy a random selection of titles, chapters, groups, tracks, MP3s, or JPEG images. Notes: •T o select the next title, chapter , group, track, MP3, or JPEG image during random playback, press the Next [] button.

77 Configuring the RD V -1.1 —Continued i.LINK Output Setting This setting is used to configure the i.LINK sockets for use with SA CD. It also affects D VD-Audio output. Off (default) SA CD audio is output by the analog audio outputs but not the i.
78 Configuring the RD V -1.1 —Continued 1 Use the Up and Down [ ]/[ ] buttons to select Speaker Set- ting, press the [Enter] button, use the Up and Down [ ]/[ ] b ut- tons to select On, and then press the [Enter] button. When the Speaker Setting is set to Of f, these settings cannot be selected.

80 Configuring the RD V -1.1 —Continued Setting Levels With the T est T one AV Synchronization When using progressiv e scanning you may find that the picture and sound are out of sync. W ith this setting you can delay the audio to correct this. There are three setup memories (1, 2, 3) for storing settings for up to three components.
