Chapter 1. Safety information This chapter presents following safety information that you need t o be familiar with befor e you service a ThinkP ad Notebook.
Electrical safety Observe the following rules when working on electrical equipment. Important: Use only appr oved t ools and test equipment. Some hand tools have handles cover ed with a soft mat erial that does not insulat e you when working with live electrical curr ents.
– Use caution; do not become a victim yourself. – Switch off power . – Send another person to get medical aid. Safety inspection guide The purpose of this inspection guide is t o assist you in identifying potentially unsafe conditions.
Notes: 1. Use pr oduct-specic ESD pr ocedures when they ex ceed the r equirements noted her e. 2. Mak e sur e that the ESD pr otective devices you use have been certied (ISO 9000) as fully effective. When handling ESD-sensitive parts: • Keep the parts in prot ective packages until they ar e inserted into the product.
Before the computer is powered on after FRU r eplacement, make sure all screws, springs, and other small parts are in place and ar e not left loose inside the computer . V erify this by shaking the computer and list ening for r attling sounds. Metallic parts or metal akes can cause electrical shorts.
DANGER Though the main batt eries have low voltage, a shorted or grounded battery can produce enough current to burn personnel or combustible materials.

Chapter 2. Important service information This chapter pr esents following important service information that applies t o all machine types supported by this manual: • “Str ategy for r eplacing FRU.
• Some computers have both a processor boar d and a system board. If you ar e instructed t o replace either the pr ocessor boar d or the system boar d, and replacing one of them does not corr ect the problem, reinstall that board, and then replace the other one.
• The MTM portion of the machine label is the 4-digit MT and 3-digit model, wher e model =“C T O” (Example: 1829-CT O). The PRODUC T ID portion of the machine label is the 4-digit MT and 3-digit CMV model (Example: 1829-W15). • The PEW recor d is the 4-digit MT and 3-digit model, where model =“C T O” (Example: 1829-CT O).

Check that power is supplied when you turn on the computer . 5. T urn off the comput er . 6. Disconnect the ac adapter and install the char ged battery pack.
P erform oper ational char ging. If the battery status indicator or icon does not turn on, r emove the battery pack and let it r eturn to room temper ature. Reinstall the battery pack. If the char ge indicator or icon still does not turn on, r eplace the batt ery pack.

Chapter 4. Related service information This chapter pr esents following information: • “Restoring the factory cont ents by using Pr oduct Recovery discs” on page 35 • “Restoring the fact ory.
Restoring the factory contents by using Recovery Disc Set When the har d disk drive (HDD) or solid state drive (SSD) is replaced because of a failure, no product r ecovery progr am is on the new drive. In this case, you must use the Recovery Disc Set for the computer .
Note: The r est of the r ecovery pr ocess is fully automated and no action is r equired by you. The computer will restart int o the Micr osoft Windows desktop several times and you might experience periods when no activity is apparent on the scr een for several minutes at a time.
How t o remove the power -on password T o remove a POP that you have forgotten, do the following: (A) If no SVP has been set: 1. T urn off the comput er . 2. Remove the battery pack. F or how t o remove the batt ery pack, see “1020 Battery pack” on page 63.
7. T ype the current mast er HDP in the Ent er Current P assword eld. then leave the Enter New P assword eld blank, and pr ess Ent er twice. 8. P ress F10. 9. Select Y es in the Setup Congur ation window . Both user HDP and mast er HDP will have been r emoved.
• The ring indicator (RI) is signaled by a serial device or a PC C ard device. ( does not support the ring indicator (RI) resume by PC Car d device.) • The time set on the r esume timer elapses. Note: The computer does not accept any input immediately aft er it ent ers sleep (standby) mode.
A numeric error is displayed for each err or det ected in POS T or system operation. In the displays, n can be any number . If no numeric code is displayed, check the narr ative descriptions of sympt oms. If the sympt om is not described ther e, go to “Int ermittent pr oblems” on page 48.

Before servicing ThinkP ad X200 T ablet and X201 T ablet Removing the SIM card: Some models of the ThinkPad X200 T ablet and X201 T ablet you are servicing might have the SIM car d that the customer has been installed. If the computer you are servicing has the SIM car d, remove it before you start the servicing.
