Chapter 2. Important service information This chapter pr esents following important service information that applies to all machine types supported by this manual: • “Str ategy for r eplacing FRUs.
Attention: The drive startup sequence in the computer you are servicing may have been changed. Be extr emely car eful during writ e oper ations such as copying, saving, or formatting. If you select an incorr ect drive, data or progr ams can be overwritten.

What to do rst When you do r eturn a FRU, you must include the following information in the parts ex change form or parts return form that you attach to it: 1. Name and phone number of service technician 2. Date of service 3. Date on which the machine failed 4.
Checkout guide Use the following pr ocedures as a guide in identifying and corr ecting pr oblems with the ThinkP ad Notebook. Note: The diagnostic tests ar e int ended to test only ThinkP ad pr oducts. The use of non- ThinkP ad products, prot otype car ds, or modied options can lead t o false indications of errors and invalid system responses.
3. T urn on the computer . If the computer cannot be power ed on, go t o “P ower system checkout” on page 34, and check the power sources. If an error code appears, go t o “Symptom-t o-FRU inde x” on page 43. 4. When the ThinkP ad logo comes up, immediately press F12 to enter the Boot Menu.

P ower system check out T o verify a symptom, do the following: 1. T urn off the computer . 2. Remove the batt ery pack. 3. Connect the ac power adapt er . 4. Check that power is supplied when you turn on the comput er . 5. T urn off the computer . 6.
P erform oper ational char ging. If the battery status indicator or icon does not turn on, r emove the battery pack and let it r eturn to room temper ature. Reinstall the batt ery pack. If the char ge indicator or icon still does not turn on, replace the battery pack.

Attention: If the user HDP has been forgott en, check whether a mast er HDP has been set. If it has, it can be used for access to the hard disk drive. If no master HDP is available, neither Lenovo nor.
2. When the ThinkP ad logo comes up, immediately press F1 t o enter the ThinkP ad Setup pr ogram. When the POP icon is appearing on the scr een, enter the POP . 3. Select Security , using the cursor directional keys t o move the menu. 4. Select P assword .
P ower management T o r educe power consumption, the computer has thr ee power management modes: scr een blank, sleep (standby in Windows XP), and hibernation. Screen blank mode If the time set on the “T urn off monit or ” timer in the oper ating syst em expir es, the L CD backlight turns off.
• The system is powered off. Note: If the comput er enters the hibernation mode while it is dock ed to the docking station, do not undock it before r esuming normal operation. If you do undock it and then try to r esume normal oper ation, you will get an err or message, and you will have to restart the system.

Intermittent pr oblems Intermittent system hang pr oblems can be due to a variety of causes that have nothing to do with a hardwar e defect, such as cosmic r adiation, electr ostatic dischar ge, or software err ors. FRU replacement should be considered only when a pr oblem recurs.

• T orque driver If you have a tor que driver , refer to the “T orque” column for each step. • Make sure that you use the correct scr ew. If you have a t orque scr ewdriver , tighten all screws rmly to the tor que shown in the table. Never use a screw that you removed.

Chapter 8. Removing and replacing a FRU This chapter presents directions and dr awings for use in removing and replacing a FRU . External CRU statement to customers : Some problems with your pr oduct can be r esolved with a replacement part you can install yourself, called a “Cust omer Replaceable Unit” or “CRU .
Before servicing ThinkP ad T420 and T420i Some models of the ThinkP ad T420 and T420i you are servicing might have the SIM car d that the cust omer has installed. If the comput er you ar e servicing has the SIM card, r emove it befor e you start the servicing.
1010 Battery pack Important notice for replacing a battery pack: Lenovo ThinkV antage T oolbo x (in Windows 7) has an automatic battery diagnostic that det ermines if the battery pack is defective. A battery pack FRU should not be r eplaced unless this diagnostic shows that the battery is defective.
