Black plate (15,1) q Seat Recline WARNING Do not drive with either front seat reclined: Sitting in a reclined position while the vehicle is moving is dangerous because you do not get the full protection from sea t belts. During sudden braking or a collisi on, you can slide under the lap belt and suffer serious inte rnal injuries.
Black plate (16,1) CAUTION When returning a rear-reclined seatback to its upright position, make sure you hold on to the seatback with you r other hand while operating the lever. If the seatback is not supported, it will flip forward suddenly and could cause injury.
Black plate (17,1) Never allow a passenger to sit or stand on the folded seatback while the vehicle is moving: Driving with a passe nger on the folded seatback is dangerous. Allowing a child to sit up on the folded seatback while the vehicle is moving is particu larly dangerous.

Belt clip T o return the seatbacks to the upright position WARNING Always make sure the seat belts are fully pulled out from under the seatbacks: A seat belt caugh t under a seatback after the seatback is returned to its upright position is danger ous.

Head Restraints Y our vehicle is equipped with head restraints on all outboard seats.
Black plate (20,1) Rear outboard seat Removal/Installation T o remove the head restraint, pull it up while pressing the stop-catch . T o install the head restraint, press the uprights into the holes while pressing the stop-catch.
Black plate (21,1) Seat Belt Precautions Seat belts help to d ecrease the possibility of severe injury during acciden ts and sudden stops. Mazda recommends that the driver and all passengers always wear seat belts. All of the seat belt retr actors are designed to keep the lap/shoulder belts out of the way when not in use.
Black plate (22,1) WARNING Always wear your seat belt and ma ke sure all occupants are pro perly restrained: Not wearing a seat belt is extremely danger ous. During a collis ion, occupants not wearing seat belts could hit someone or things ins ide the vehicle or even be thrown out of the vehicle.
Black plate (23,1) CAUTION Belt retraction may become diffic ult if the belts and rings are soiled, so try to keep them clean. For more details about cleaning the seat belts, refer to “ Cleaning the Lap/Shoulder Belt Webbing ” (page 8-52).
Black plate (24,1) q Automatic Locking Mode Always use the automatic locking mode to keep the child-restraint system from shif ting to an unsafe position in the event of an acciden t. T o enable seat belt automatic locking mode, pull it all the way out and connect it as instruct ed on the child-restrai nt system.

Black plate (26,1) q Unfastening the Seat Belt Depress the button on the seat belt buckle . If the belt does not fully retract, pull it out and check for kinks or twists. Then make sure it remains untwisted as it retracts. Button NOTE If a belt does not fully retract, inspect it for kinks and twists.
Black plate (27,1) Front Seat Belt Pretensioner and Load Limiting Systems For optimum protection, the driver and front passenger seat belts are equipped with pretensioner and load limiting systems. For both these syst ems to work properly you must wear the seat belt properly .
Black plate (28,1) Do not modify the components or wiring, or use electronic testing devices on the pretensioner system: Modifying the componen ts or wiring of the pretensioner system, including the use of electronic testing devices is dangerous.
Black plate (29,1) q Air Bag/Front Seat Belt Pretensioner System W arning Beep If a malfunction is detected in the air bag/ front seat belt prete nsioner systems and the warning light, a warning beep sound will be heard for about 5 seconds every minute.
Black plate (30,1) Do not use an imprope r extender: Using a seat belt extender that is for another person or a different vehicle or seat is dangerous. The seat belt will not provide adequate protection and the user could be seriously injured in an ac cident.
Black plate (31,1) Seat Belt W arning Light/Beep The seat belt war ning light illuminates and a beep sound will be heard if the driver's seat belt is not fastened when the ignition is switched ON. Conditions of operation Condition Result The driver's seat belt is not fastened when the ignition is switched ON.

SRS air bags are designed to work together with the seat belt s to help to reduce injuries during an accident. The SRS air bags a re designed to provide furt her protection for passen gers in addition to the seat belt functions.
Black plate (55,1) q Front Passenger Air Bag The front passenger air bag is mounted in the front passenger dashboard. The inflation mechanism for the front passenger air bag is the same as the drive r's air bag, as mentioned above. For more details about air bag deployment, refer to “ SRS Air Bag Depl oyment Criteria ” (page 2-47).
Black plate (56,1) q Side Air Bags The side air bags are mounted in the outboard sides of the front seatb acks. When the air bag crash sensors detect a side impact of greater than moderate force, the system inflates the side air bag only on the side in which the vehicle was hit.
Black plate (57,1) In a side impact: Greater than moderate impa ct to one side of the vehicle will cause the curtain air bag on that side only to infl ate. The side and curtain air bags will deploy only on the side the vehicle recei ves the force of the impact.
