Charms help you do the things you do mos t often, like search, share, print, and chang e settings.

© 2013 Microsoft Page 12 How do I right-click using touch? The equivalent of a right-click with your mouse i s to press and hold your finger on something for a couple seconds, then l et go and tap the option you want. To try this out, try cop ying and pasting text using touch.

Power states: On, off, standby, and restart Here’s what you need to know about the Surface pow er states. On, off , standby , and r estar t On or wake When Surface is o ff, press and release th e power button.

Choose the display se ttings that you wa nt to use when Surface is run ning on battery and wh en it's plugged in. 4. Tap or click Save chan ges . © 2013 Microsoft Page 19 The touchscreen The 10.6-inch diagona l, multi-touch screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio — perfect for w atching HD videos and optimized for multi-tasking with side- by -side apps. Lik e a smartphone, you can int eract with Surface by touching t he screen.
© 2013 Microsoft Page 20 Screen brightness By default, Surfac e automatically adjusts screen brightn ess for the light conditions. You can change this or s et the brightness to whatever you’ d like. Here’s ho w: 1. Open the Settings char m, and then tap or cli ck Change PC settin gs .
© 2013 Microsoft Page 21 Add your email accounts You can add your email accounts from Out look, Gmail, AOL, Yahoo! , and even your work email (Exchange ActiveSync ). To add an email account: 1. Open Mail (from the Start screen, tap or cl ick Mail ) .
© 2013 Microsoft Page 22 Outlook Express, Windows Mail, o r Windows Live Mail If you’ve been using Outloo k Express, Window s Mail, or Windows Live Ma il, you can move your e mail and add ress book from your old P C to the cloud. On ce you do this, you can a ccess your emai l and contacts in the Mail an d People apps on Surface.
© 2013 Microsoft Page 23 Show the k eyboard f rom the des ktop The on- screen k eyboard doesn’t automatically app ear if you’re in the desktop. In stead, you need to tap or cli ck the Keyboard icon on the taskbar (lower -right corner of the scre en).

© 2013 Microsoft Page 25 Lock screen When you wake up Surface, th e battery status appe ars on the lock screen (lower - left corner). Charms When you swipe in from the right- edge of the screen, the battery status appears in the low er- left corner of the screen (see picture) .
© 2013 Microsoft Page 26 Note The USB port is o nly for charging. Device s connected to the USB chargi ng port aren’t recognized by Surface. If you want to us e a USB device, plug it into the USB port on Surface. Find out more about this in the Add a device section of this guide.

Touch You can use your fing ers to interact with Surfa ce. For example, drag your finger across the Start scr een to scroll and tap a tile to op en it.

© 2013 Microsoft Page 31 T ype Cover Type Cover is a slim v ersion of a tradition al keyboard with moving keys. It gives you the speed and feel of a laptop keyboard. Just like the Touch Cover keyboard, Type Cover magn etically clicks into place and d oubles as a cover for your Surface.
© 2013 Microsoft Page 32 How do I change the trackpad settings? A Trackpad Settings app i s available in the Windows St ore. To install the app: 1. Open the Store app, and then type trackpa d settings . 2. Tap or click Trackpa d Settings from the s earch results and then tap o r click Install .
© 2013 Microsoft Page 33 Mouse You can use the tra ckpad on Touch Cover or T ype Cover when you need a mouse, or you can conn ect a USB or Bluetooth mouse . To use a USB mouse, pl ug the transceiver i nto the USB port on your Surface. To use a mouse wi th Bluetooth , s ee the Add a Bluetooth device section in this g uide.
© 2013 Microsoft Page 34 Ac co un ts A user account is a coll ection of settings that you us e to interact with your Surfa ce and personalize Windo ws RT to work the way you want. To use your Surface, you sign in with your user account. There are two types of us er accounts: a local account o r a Microsoft account.
© 2013 Microsoft Page 35 the Internet. Man y of the settings, preference s, and apps associated with your Micr osoft account can "follow " you between different PCs.
© 2013 Microsoft Page 36 There are three types of a ccounts. Each type gives you a differ ent level of control: Standard accounts are for everyday use.
© 2013 Microsoft Page 37 Family Safety, you — or at least one designat ed parent — ne eds an administrator account. The kids you choose to monitor each need a stand ard user account. To find out how to us e Family Safety, see th e topic Set up your kids' account in Family Safe ty on Windows.
© 2013 Microsoft Page 38 Si g n in an d ou t If you don’t use Surfa ce for a few minutes the scre en turns off and locks, just lik e a smartphone. When this happens, you’ll need to unlock your Surface to us e it. Note To find out how to change this, se e Change when the screen dim s and turns off in this guide.
© 2013 Microsoft Page 39 Switch to anothe r account If you share your Surf ace with someone else, you can switch to ano ther account o n your Surface without signing out or closing your apps. Here’s how: 1. From the Start screen, t ap or click your account picture in the upper -right corner.

Account password If you use a strong pa ssword and change it regul arly, you can help keep your Surf ace more secure.
© 2013 Microsoft Page 41 1. Open the Settings char m, tap or click PC s ettings , then tap o r click Users . 2. Under Sign-in option s, find the Require a password after the display is off for setting. This setting might not be availabl e if you’ve added a work e mail account to the Mail app.

© 2013 Microsoft Page 45 To switch between a ll apps (desktop and Window s Store apps), hold dow n the Alt key and press the Tab key repeatedly to switc h between apps. Wh en you get to the app you w ant, just let go. Use two apps side by side (snap apps) Keep an eye on your music playlist while you work on a rep ort.

© 2013 Microsoft Page 47 App settings The Settings charm is context sensitive, meaning that what you can do depends on where you are. Wh en you open Settings, the i tems in the upper-right corner change depending on wh ere you are. For example, if you open Settings from an app, you ’ll see settings for that app.
© 2013 Microsoft Page 48 Wi n do ws St ore Discover a variety of gr eat apps in the W indows Store. Yo u can check out the feat ured apps, or browse app s by category li ke Surface Picks or Games. I n each category you can browse apps in groups such as Top fr ee, Top paid, and New releases.
© 2013 Microsoft Page 49 Swipe in from the right -edge of the screen, tap o r click the Search charm, and then type the app you’re looking for . 4. Ta p or click an app to learn about it and r ead reviews. 5. Tap or click Buy , Try , or Install .
© 2013 Microsoft Page 50 Office apps can’t be unins talled. App updates Apps are periodically upd ated by app d evelopers and the Store tile tells you wh en updates are available. For example, a “ 4 ” on the Store tile means that four of your apps have updates.

Sign in to the billing w ebsite using your Microsoft account. 5. Tap or click transactio ns , and then choose fro m the options to view your billing h istory.

Add your accounts One of the first things you’ll want to do with your new Surface is add your accounts — lik e Outlook.com, Gmail, Skype, Facebook, T witter, LinkedIn — to your Microsoft account .

© 2013 Microsoft Page 54 To move a tile, drag it up or down, and then drag it where you want it. Resize a tile If a tile isn't fitting i n the spot you want, you can usually make i t larger or smaller. Here’s how: Swipe down on the tile (or r ight click), then tap or cli ck Larger or Smaller .
© 2013 Microsoft Page 55 Sync your settings When you sign in with a Microsoft account , Surface is connected to th e cloud. This means th at many of your personal settings and p references are stor ed on Microsoft servers online, and ar e synced to any Windows 8 o r Windows RT PC that you sign in to.
© 2013 Microsoft Page 56 Add languages You can add langu ages so that you can read and type in different languages. On ce you add a langu age, you can choose your displa y language — thi s is the language you see mos t often in Windo ws and in your apps — and switch b etween different languages a s you type.
© 2013 Microsoft Page 57 Pin or unpin a desktop app from the taskbar You can pin or unpin a desktop app (such as the Offi ce apps) to th e desktop taskbar. Here’s how: 1. Go to the Start screen and t ype the Office app that you want to pin to th e taskbar (Wo rd, PowerPoint, Excel, or OneNote) .
© 2013 Microsoft Page 58 Printer that is connec ted to another PC If someone else in your home already has a printer ins talled, you can join the Ho megroup and print to th is printer. ( The PC that the printer is co nnected to must be turned on and the prin ter must be compa tible with Windows RT .

Wi th W indows RT, you can update or instal l drivers only through Windows Up date. Printer compatib ility Windows RT is comp atible with printers that ar e certified for Windows RT.

Windows comes with four libraries: Docu ments, Music, Pictures, and V ideos. It's a good idea to put your files in their corresponding libraries to make sur e they show up in your apps .

You can also use either c amera to take pi ctures. A privacy light appears wh en either camera is on , so there are no surpris es.
