Chapter 1 Getting Started 5 Setting up the Motion C5 The C5 is self-contained, so you can start using it immediately . If you are using a C5 Docking Station, refer to the instructions that came with the docking station. Y ou should connect AC power until the battery is fully ch arged.
6 Chapter 1 Getting Started Step 4: Get familiar with the Motion C5 Motion Computing of fers free Web-based Quick Start T raining that you can use to familiarize yourself with the features of the M otion C5. If you are new to pen-based computing, you ca n use the t raining to get st ar ted quickly.
7 Fe a t u r e s 2 The Motion C5 has the power and featur es of a traditional computer , while giving you the added mobility and v ersatility of a por table computer .
8 Chapter 2 Featu res Pe n An important difference between traditional PC s and the Motion C5 is that you frequently use a pen instead of a mouse and keyboard to interac t with th e computer . The pen includes a pressure- sensitive tip, a function button, and an eraser .
Chapter 2 Featu res 9 F ront panel buttons Y ou can use the buttons on the front of the C5 to per form many functions without having to use the pen. The buttons are customizable, so you can modify their func tions to suit the way you w ork . See “Configuring front panel buttons” on page 21.
10 Chapter 2 Featu res Display The Motion C5 includes a 10.4" X GA TFT L CD display with the following featur es: • A highly readable L CD (liquid cr ystal display). • 1024 x 768 n ative resolution. • Intel Display Power Saving T echnolo gy .
Chapter 2 Feature s 11 Camera The C5 includes a built-in 2-megapix el auto-foc us camera that you can use t o take pic tures and save them to the hard disk drive . The camera lens is on the back o f the C5, and include s a light to illumina te the subject.
12 Chapter 2 Featu res Speaker The Motion C5 includes a sealed speaker th at can be used for audio warnings or confirmation, dictatio n, videos, or other multimedia applications. Docking connector The docking connector is used to attach the C5 to a dock ing station.
Chapter 2 Feature s 13 Bar code scanner (optional) The Motion C5 includes an optional integrated 1D and 2D bar code scanne r that you can use to retrieve inf ormation from bar codes. A bar code is a series of shapes on a contrasting background that can be optically read by a bar code scanner .
14 Chapter 2 Featu res W i-F i (802.11a/b/g wireless) The Motion C5 has integrated Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g) that you can use to conne ct to the Internet and oth er computers wir elessly . Y ou can use Wi-F i in many schools, hospitals, clinics, airports, and hotels.

17 Using the M ot ion C5 3 The Motion C5 runs Microsoft Windows XP T ablet PC edition, which includes ink- to-text and word recognition, v oice recogn ition, and impr oved security to help defend agai nst viruses, worms , and other threats . And unlike PDA s or other handheld devices, the C5 runs a ny Windows XP -compatible application.
18 Chapter 3 Using the Motion C5 Using Motion Dashboar d Motion Dashboard puts many common settings an d tasks a t your fingertips. F or example, you can enable or disable Bluetooth and Wi-F i, calibrate the digitizer , or che ck the remaining battery power .
Chapter 3 Using the Motion C5 19 Using the pen Y ou can use the pen to write on the display and navigat e the operating sy stem. A pen can feel more natural in your hand than a mouse, and you can use the pen while sta nding or walking. The following table show the various mouse actions a nd their pen equivalents.

Chapter 3 Using the Motion C5 21 Configuring fr ont panel buttons As you bec ome more familiar with the C5, yo u may wa nt to customize the buttons on the front pane l. Y ou can configur e the buttons to start your favorit e program, run a command, or enter a key combination.

Y ou can adjust the brightness level, rotate the di splay , and change the order in which th e display rotat es. Adjusting the displa y brightness Use this procedure to change the brightness of the display .

26 Chapter 3 Using the Motion C5 Using the built-in micr ophones Y ou can use the built-in microphones to record audio, dictate notes, and use voice commands. The t wo microphon es are used at th e same time to optimize sound detection for speech recognition and v oice recor ding.

28 Chapter 3 Using the Motion C5 Setting up speech recognition Before you can use speech recognition, y ou must configure the micr ophones and trai n the system f or the characteristics of your voice. The entire proc ess takes about 10 minutes. Y ou should move to a quiet en vironment before starting this procedure .

Chapter 3 Using the Motion C5 31 Using Hibernate Hibernation is a state in which the computer shuts down to save pow er but first saves ever ything in me mor y on the hard disk . When you restar t the computer , your desktop is restored exactly as you lef t it.
32 Chapter 3 Using the Motion C5 Using the batter y The Motion C5 runs on batter y power when it is not plugged in. The batter y is located on the back of the unit. Checking batter y power Y ou can check the remaining battery power from Motion Dashboard, fr om the battery icon in the notification area, or from the battery itself .
Chapter 3 Using the Motion C5 33 Charging the batter y When the C5 is connected to AC po wer , the battery automaticall y charges until it reaches full char ge, whether th e unit is on or off . F or information about the battery status lig ht, see “Status lights ” on page 8.
34 Chapter 3 Using the Motion C5 T o replace the ba ttery 1. Place the tabbed end of the batter y into the batter y compartment. 2. Press the battery down until it locks in to place. Swapping t he battery Y ou can swap the standard ba ttery while the sy stem is on, with or without having the C5 plugged in to AC power .
Chapter 3 Using the Motion C5 35 Disposing of used batt eries A Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery should be disp osed of at a hazar dous materials recycling cente r when it is no longer serviceable. Do not throw it in a waste r eceptacle bec ause the battery could end up in a landfill.

Practice allows you to do a trial run of the fingerprint capture. 5. Chapter 3 Using the Motion C5 43 Setting up a hard disk drive (HDD ) password Y ou can use a HDD password t o protect the computer and the hard disk driv e. The computer cannot be sta rte d without the H DD password, and the data on the disk drive cannot be accesse d, even if it is removed and attached to a different computer .

Chapter 3 Using the Motion C5 45 Setting up a Bluetooth device Before you can use a Bluetooth device with the C5, you need to set up the device. After the device is paired with the C5, a passkey is used to create a secure connection bet ween the C5 and the Bluetooth device.

48 Chapter 4 Care and Maintenance Standard displa y • Clean fingerpr ints and most marks from the display sur face by wi ping it with the soft cloth (provided). Do not pour liquids direct ly onto the display sur face itself. Do not use an abrasiv e cleaner on the display .

52 Chapter 4 Care and Maintenance Replacing pen tips P en tips eventually wear down or get damaged, so the pen includes extra tips and a too l for repla ci ng t he m. With typical use , you should ch ange the pen tip every 90 days . If you use the pen in a dirty environment, you should change the pen tip ever y 30 days .
Chapter 4 Care and Maintenance 53 T raveling b y air Use the following tips when traveling by air . • Have a fully charged battery in ca se security personnel ask you to star t the C5. • Have it hand-inspected or sent through the X-ray scanner , but never carr y it through the metal detector .
