Intr oduction Congratulatio ns on choosing o ne of NDC’ s InstantW ave High Rate wireless networking product’s family . InstantWave High Rate was one of the first IEEE 802.11b wireless stan dard com pliant pro ducts in t he indust ry and was designed t o maximize the conven ience of networking.
Glossar y Group ID / BSSID A Group I D (the 802. 11 stan dard uses the t erm B SSID) is the I D of a wir eless cell. A wireless cell is usually made up of stations in an area that the radio signal can comfortabl y cover. In other w ords, any wirel ess station in the cell can comm uni cate with any ot her wi t hin reac h of the radio signa l .
Ho w to Use this Guide InstantWav e High Rate is extremely versatile in providing varying lev els of network m anagem ent. For S mall Office/ Home Office users, setup a nd configuration is a quick, four-step pr ocess.
Planning Y our Netw or k Infrastructure Network Types An Infrastr ucture netw ork is form ed by seve ral stations and one or more Access Points (APs), with the stations within a set distance from the AP. Figure 1 depicts a typical In frastructure network to pology.

The APs could also be connected to s ervers on the wired Et hernet netw ork. The s hadowed area represents signal overlap bet ween s ubnet1 (AP -1) and s ubnet2 (A P-3).
Planning an Infrastructure Network This section e xplains s ome of the things y ou need to c onsider in planni ng an Infrastructure network. Setting up is a two step process.
Roaming InstantWave High Rate products are equipped with seamless roaming cap abilities. Roaming i s necessary to prevent m obile Stations from being discon nected from the network as they m ove arou nd.
Access Point Placement Guidelines A characteristic of ra dio comm unication is the “inte rference” pro blem. R adio is receptive to interfe rence. Therefore , th e more interfe rence you ca n avoid, the better performance you will get from wireless products.

AP COMFig T ool The AP COMFig Tool is a Windows 95 /98/ME/NT/2000 ba sed utility that is us ed via a COM port connection between t he AP and a PC. It provides the following function s: • Sets necessary AP pa rameters (e.g., IP addre ss, Domain na me, etc.

The first is by entering any text in the Passphrase field . Click the Generate button. It will generate four keys, Key 1 , Key 2 , Ke y 3 and Key 4 . Select a key number from t he dropdown li st of the Default Key box. If you do not select a ke y, key 1 i s selected, as it is the default key.
