3 2. Battery ins tallation and charging Before you can use your new phone, you need to attach and charge the battery . Attaching the battery To attach the batte ry , pla ce it on the back of the ph one as shown and s lide it toward t he top of the phone until it clicks into place.
4 charging w ill automatically resume after the battery is restored to its normal operating sta te. If charging still fails , contact you r dealer . When is char ging com plete? When the charge indicators stop scrolling, your phone is considered fully c harged.
5 Important battery information • Note that a new battery’s full performance is achieved only after two or three complete charge and discharge cycles! • The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of t imes but it will eventually wear out.

11 Entering letters and numbers Curs or The cursor is a blin king vertical l ine that appears on t he screen when y ou are entering text or numbers. Characters you enter appear to th e right of th e cursor . Press ing the key dele tes the charact er to the left of the cursor .
12 Spec ial char acter s in name s In ABC mod e you can pre ss the key to view the special characters below . Y ou can us e these characters whe n saving names in your phone book.
13 Keyguard (loc king the keypa d) The Keyguard feature allows you to “lock” your pho ne’s ke ypad so that accident al keypresse s have no effect. This is han dy when your ph one is in a pocket or purse. Note: Keyguard is not a security feature and will not prevent unauthorized use of your phon e.
14 4. Basic functions Turning the phone on or of f Press and hold the key for one second. Note: If the phone asks for a lock code, see ‘Lock code’ on page 5 1 .
15 Get a stro ng signal When you are at the start sc reen (see pag e 7) or in a call, th e strength of th e radio signal is indicated by the signal indicators on the left side of your phone’s display . These indicators scroll as the sign al stren gth increa ses and decre ases.
16 Last number redial The las t 1 0 number s you dialed ar e stored i n the diale d calls list. Use this l ist to redial a numbe r you have calle d recently . 1 From the start screen, press to access the dialed calls list. 2 Scroll to the d esired number .
17 Cal ler ID Caller ID is a network service that can display th e name and phone number of the person callin g you, if the inform ation is available. Contact your service provider for details. If the caller ca n be iden tified, th e phone may dis play the ca ller's name and phone num ber .
18 5. Settings This section describes some phone settings that allow you to customize your phon e to suit your preferences and that you probably won’t change v ery often. Automatic redial Use Menu 4 1 2 to turn this fea ture on or off. W hen this feature is on and the wireless network is busy , your phone will redial a number up to three times.
19 Note: The order of the follo wing steps may vary , dependin g on which dialing sequence your card uses. 6 Enter acc ess number (us ually the 1 -800 numbe r listed on the back of the calling c ard), then press OK . 7 Enter your card numb er and/or PIN, then press OK .
20 Clock Y our phone ha s an internal clock that can be displayed on th e start screen. The clock must be set in order for ca ll times to be re corded (see ‘Ca ll log’ on page 39). If you remov e the battery for longe r than a couple of seconds, the time will be lost.
21 Lights If you’re using yo ur phone wi th a car kit, use Menu 4 2 4 t o set your phone’s lights to On (lights stay on) or Automatic (after 15 s econds, lights tu rn off until the next key is pressed, phone rings, etc.). For information about turning your phon e’s lights on at any time, see page 7.
22 Ringing tone Y our phone plays a ringing tone when someone calls you and the ringing option is set to Ring , Ascen ding , or Ring once . Use Menu 8 2 to choose one of 30 ringing t ones. Scroll to a ton e to hear how it sounds. Note: If the ringin g option is set to Silent or Beep once , the phone won’t play sample tones.
23 Note: The vibrating battery does not vibrate when your phone is connected to or placed in any charging device. Quick al ert set tings Y ou ca n quickl y adjust your p hone’s sound settings when you g o into a meeting, go outdoors, etc. To choose a quick alert setting, briefly press the key , scroll to the setting you wa nt, then p ress OK .
24 Voice mailbox number If you have a voice mail s ubscription, use Menu 2 2 2 to save the voice mailbox numbe r given to you by your s ervice provider . This number may be up to 3 2 digits long. Once you save your voice m ailbox number , you can pres s and hold the key to dial your voice mailbox .
25 6. Emerg ency calls 1 If the phone is no t on, switch it on. 2 Press and hold t he key for sev eral seconds to ready the phone for calls . 3 Ke y in th e emerge ncy numbe r for y our pre sent l ocation (e.g. 9 1 1 or other official emergen cy number).
26 Emergency ke y 9 Use Menu 4 1 1 to turn on this feature. W hen this feature is on, the ph one attempts to make an em ergency c all when you: • press and hold the 9 key , or • press 9 , then press Call . Note: Whe n Ke yguard is act ive, the only way to make an emerg ency cal l is t o dial t he emer gency nu mber , then press Call .
27 7. Adva nced function s Network feature sett ing Call forwarding, call waiting, and send own number are network s ervices available through your serv ice provider . These features do not appear in your phone’s Netw ork serv ices menu until you save the re lated feature code(s) given to you by your service provider .
28 In-call menu When you are in a call , the function of the Navi™ key is End . Howe ver , your phone has an in-c all menu that allows you to perform several functions whil e in a call. To use the in-call menu, press while you are in a ca ll, then press Options .
29 Endi ng ca lls Press End or select End from the in-call me nu. Note: The wireless network does not support ending individual calls when more than one call is in progress. Call wa iting Call wait ing is a network service that allow s you to rece ive an incoming call when you’re already in a call.
30 Call forwarding Call forwarding is a ne twork service t hat lets you forward your incoming calls to another phone num ber. Check with your service provider for details and feature codes. Activatin g call for warding Standard method To activate call forwarding, you must get th e call forwarding activation code from your se rvice provider .
31 1-touch dialing This feature a llows you to mak e phone calls qu ickly and easily with the to uch of a button. Once you have assigned a pho ne numb er to a nu mber k ey (2 throu gh 8), you ca n pres s and hold th at key to dial t he number . (Y ou can al so press the number key briefly and then press Call .
32 A number assignment module , or NAM, consists of a phone number and ne twork information that the service provider programs into your phone. When you select a NAM, you ’re not only selecting a phone number , you’re also selecting a home system in w hich you will not be charge d roaming fees.
33 Calling card ca lls Before you ca n make a c all using a ca lling card, you have to enter your c alling card inform ation into the phone . See ‘Calling card set-up’ on page 18.
34 T o switch from priva te to pub lic If you are in a privat e system and want access to a public syst em, p ress and h old Me nu when you a re not i n a call . Y our phone w ill display Sea rch pu blic sys tems? Press OK and your phone will use the public system for the next outgoing call.
35 Setting a utomatic to uch tone lengt h Use Menu 4 2 1 2 to set the len gth of touch ton es sent automatically by the phone to Sh ort (one te nth of a second) or Long (half a second). Saving touch tone string s Touch tone strings c an be used for sen ding and recei ving information w ith your phone.
36 8. Phone boo k Y our phone allows you to save 1 00 phone numbers and associated names s o they are right at your fingertips for easy d ial ing. Saving names and numbers Saving a name and number is easy! Just en ter the phon e number, press or , then p ress Save .
37 Not es ab out sa ving n ames • A n ame may app ear on ly on ce in me mory . If yo u try to save a name that already exists in memory , the phone asks if you wan t to replace the ex isting name . • If you try to save a phone number and y our phone book is full, you a re given the option to replace an ex isting entry .
38 Editing names and numbers To edit phone book entries, press Men u 1 3 , scroll to the entry yo u want to ed it, then pres s Edit . Edit the nam e and numbe r as ne eded. Erasing names and numbers Use Menu 1 4 to erase entries from your phone book. One by one le ts you select one entry a t a time to be erased.
39 9. Call log For your co nvenience, the call log (Menu 3) sav es a list o f phone numbers you have diale d, and can show you how much time you have spent on th e phone. If you subscribe to the caller I D network servic e, the call log als o records the phone number s of missed calls and received ca lls.
40 Viewing the missed c alls list at a ny time Use Menu 3 1 to view the missed c alls list at any tim e. T o dial a number , press O ptions , then choose Call . Received calls If you su bscribe to the caller ID netwo rk service, your phone automati cally stores the phone nu mbers of the 1 0 most rece nt cal ls you’v e answer ed.
41 Viewin g call ti mers Use Menu 3 5 to v iew the various c all timer s. Last call is the duration of the last call, or curre nt call if applicable. All call s is the duration of all calls since the timers were last reset. Life ti mer displays the duration of all calls for the life of your phone and cann ot be reset.
42 1 0. Voice messages V oice mail is a network s ervice that allows callers to reco rd a mes sage whe n you c annot be reac hed. Y ou can t hen cal l your voic e mailbox and retrieve your mess ages. Saving your voice mailbox number When you subscribe to voice mail, your service provider will give you a voice mailbox n umber .

44 About the In box The Inbox holds text messages that have not bee n deleted or saved . Use Menu 2 1 1 to access the In box at a ny time. Y ou wi ll see a list of me ssage headers. The icon in fro nt of the header indicates that a message has been read.
45 T ext messag e features for the 5 160i If you hav e the Nokia 5160i, you have t he capability to write, send, forward and reply to text messages. Y our phone must be a 5160i to perform these func tions, and you must subscribe to th e text m essaging netw ork service.
46 Message s ettings This network feature allows you to mark y our text messag e as urge nt, plac e your numb er withi n the text m essage, or request a read rece ipt. This is a network fe ature. 48 12. Extra features Alarm clock The alarm clock feature is based on your phone’s internal clock and sounds an alert at a time yo u specify . Setti ng the alarm cloc k Use Menu 7 1 to turn the alarm clock on or off. Note that when you’ re entering th e alarm tim e, use two digits for both hours and m inutes (for example, enter 1:30 as 0 130 ).

51 13. Security featu res Access codes overview Access codes consist of the lock co de and security code. When you get you r phone, you should change these co des from their defaults, write dow n the new codes, and keep them in a safe place away from t he phone.
52 Rest rictin g inco ming c alls Choose Rest rict inco ming ca lls to prevent your phone from receiving incom ing calls. Enter y our security code, th en press OK .

54 Answering a cal l when the phone is locked Press An swer . Saving the unlocked phone number Use Menu 4 3 2 2 to save a number that may be called even when y our phone is locked.
