3 [ 8 ] 3 Before you begin Before you begin, you need to prepare your phone for use by installing the SIM card, charging the battery and attaching the headset. • INSTA LL THE SIM CARD Important : Switch off the pho ne before installing the SIM card.
[ 9 ] Before you begin 3 7 Install the SIM card: beveled corner on the right, gold contact area face down . 8 Lower SIM car d door and gently slide to lock in to place. Notes about SIM cards • Keep all miniature SIM cards out of the reach of small children.
3 [ 1 0 ] • CHARGE THE BATTERY 1 Connect th e lead from the charge r to the bottom of the phone. 2 Connect the charger to a standard wall outlet. The batter y power indicator (or battery bar) appears on the screen and starts scrolling. If the phone is on, Chargin g appears also.
[ 1 1 ] Before you begin 3 • The bars on the screen stop scrolling and rem ain constant when the phone is charged. If you leave the phone connected to the ch arger , the battery receives an additional charge. • If the battery is completely e mpty , it m ay take a few minutes be fore you can make or receive calls.

4 [ 16 ] • ABOUT THE START SCREEN When you tu rn on you r phone, th e first scre en t hat appe ars is the Start scr een. In the middle of the Start screen, you may see information indicating which wi r el es s ne twork your pho ne uses. This information can vary between phones.
[ 17 ] About your phone 4 Icons Icons are graphical representations of a specific item or situation. The following table shows examples an d tells you what each icon indicates. Icon What it means Y ou have an active call. Indicates the current call. Indicates a call on hold.

[ 19 ] Make and answer calls 5 5 Make and answer calls This chapter tells y ou how to make and receive calls and how to adjust certain options. • MAKE A CALL Check the signal strength The signal indicator on the left side of your phone’s screen shows the strength of the networ k radio signal.
5 [ 20 ] Adjust the earpiece volume during a call • To increase th e volume of a cal l, pre ss the top volume k ey . • To decrease the volume, press the bottom volume key . If an accessory with its own loudspeaker is conne cted to your phone, the volume keys adjust the volume for that accessor y .

7 [ 32 ] 7 Enter letters and num bers Y ou can enter lette rs and numbers into your phone for a person’s name and phone number , writing a text message, and so on. There are 2 ways to do this: • ABC mode, for m aking entries in the phon e book, enteri ng calendar notes, and renaming ca ller groups.
[ 33 ] Enter letters and numbers 7 Depending on the selected display language, the following characters may be available. Note: Some networks may not support all language-dependen t characters. Enter spaces and punctuation • To enter a space, press once.

9 [ 44 ] 9 Check call history Y our phone provides a call log that registers information about calls you make and receive. Th e call log kee ps track of the followin g: • Missed calls. • Numbers from which you’ve rec eived calls. • Numbers you’ve dialed.
[ 45 ] Check call history 9 • CHECK FOR MISSE D CALLS Y our phone saves th e numbers and names (if available ) of the last 1 0 callers that have tried unsuccessfully to reach you. The screen tells you how many calls were missed. If the caller’s name and number are stored in m emory , that in formation appears on the screen.
9 [ 46 ] • CHOOSE OPTIONS IN CALL LISTS When you view the missed calls, r eceived calls, or dialed calls list and press Option s , the following ch oices appear on your phone’s scr een. Choi ce What it does Cal l ti me Shows the date and time of the last call.
[ 47 ] Check call history 9 • CLE AR CALL LISTS This feature clears all th e missed, received, and dialed call lists. Caution: You cannot undo this operation. 1 Press Menu 2 4 ( Call log > Clear call lists ). 2 Scroll to All , Missed , Receive d , or Diale d , then press Select .

[ 55 ] Advanced calling features 10 SAVE TOUCH TONE STRINGS Store touch tone strings the same w ay you save phone numbers (see “Save names, numbers, and e -mail addresses” on page 39 ). For fr equent ly used st rings of n umbers , you can sa ve an entire sequence of digits in your phone book and send it as a touch tone string.
10 [ 56 ] 3 To unmute the microphone, p ress Unmute . Muting and unmuting also affects the microphones of any accessories connected to the phone. Make a conference call This network service allows you t o make conference calls with your phone. Check with your service p rovider for details.

The other participants can continue talking with each other . 4 Press Optio ns . 5 Scroll to End call , then pre ss Sele ct . T ransfer a call When you have 1 active and 1 held call, you can connect the 2 calls and disconnect yourself f rom the call.

10 [ 60 ] • USE AUTOM ATIC REDIAL This feature redials the n umber you’re trying to call up to 1 0 times. Note: Au tomatic redial will not work while you make or answer another call. Activate automatic re dial 1 Press Menu 4 3 3 ( Settings > Call se ttin gs > Automatic redial ).
[ 6 1 ] Advanced calling features 10 • USE 1-TOUCH DIALING Assign a name and number to a 1-touch dialing location so that when you press this key , the ph one automatically dials the associated number . Key 1 is used to access your voice mail. Check with your servi ce provider for details.

11 [ 64 ] 1 1 Use voice features The voice features in your phone make communication more convenient. Y ou can check messages from frien ds or business associates, record a voice memo, and use voice diali ng and voice comm ands for handsfre e operatio n.
[ 65 ] Use voice features 11 • SAVE THE VOICE MA ILBOX NUMBER 1 Press Menu 01 9 2 ( Messages > Voi c e messages > Vo i c e mailbox number ). 2 Enter your voice mailbox number , then press OK . W ork with 2 phone lines If your particular SIM card supports it, your phone can have 2 phone lines.
11 [ 66 ] Record a me mo 1 Press Menu 10 1 ( Extras > V oi ce reco rder ). 2 To begin recording, scroll to Record , then press Select . 3 Clearly st ate your n ote. When you are f inished, p ress Stop . When Title: appear s, enter a name and press OK to sav e it.
[ 67 ] Use voice features 11 • Select Edit title to change the name of a memo. Enter the new name and press OK . • Select Era se to dele te the memo. Set an alarm Y ou can set an alar m for a voice memo as a reminder to your self. Note: V oice memo alarms are played only when the phone is on.
11 [ 68 ] • USE VOICE DIALING Y our phone’s voice dialing f eature allows handsfree operation while you place a call. Before using this feature, you need to create e ntries in the phone book so you can associate a "voice tag" with a name and number .
[ 69 ] Use voice features 11 About voice tags Before using voice dialing, note that: • V oice tags are not language depen dent. They are de pendent on the spe ake r’s vo ice . • V oice tags are sensitive t o background noise. Record them and make calls in a quiet environment.
11 [ 7 0 ] Listen to a voice tag 1 Press Names and scroll to Vo i c e t a g s . 2 Press Select , then scroll to th e name with the voice tag you want to hear . 3 Press Optio ns , scroll to Playback , and press Select . Change a voice tag 1 Press Names and scroll to Vo i c e t a g s .
[ 7 1 ] Use voice features 11 View available functions To see which functions in your phone wor k with voice commands: Press Menu 10 2 ( Extras > Vo i c e commands ) and scroll through the list of features. Add a voice tag for the command 1 Press Menu 10 2 ( Extras > Vo i c e commands ).
11 [ 72 ] The phone replays then saves the recorded tag. The icon appears next to commands that have voice tags assigned. Activate a voice command After you as sociate a voice tag with a phone feature, you can i ssue a command by speaking the voice tag.
[ 73 ] P ersonalize you r phone 12 12 P ersonalize your phone • WHAT ARE PROFILES? Profiles let yo u set your pho ne’s sound s ettings to your environment, whether it’s a meeting or a soccer game.
12 [ 74 ] Option Wh a t it does Ringi ng op tions Allows you to chose a ringing style . Y our choices include Ring , Ascending , Ri ng once , Beep once and Silent . Ringing tone Allows you to chose from 35 pre-programmed tones. Y ou can also download up to 5 ringing tones, see “Download ringing tones” on page 82 fo r more inform ation.
[ 75 ] P ersonalize you r phone 12 Set a timed profile Timed profiles can be useful in preventing missed calls. For example, if you attend an event that requires you to set your phone to the Silent profile, you may forget to return the phone to the Normal profile after the event is over .
12 [ 76 ] Set automatic answer This profile lets your phone answer incoming calls after just 1 ring. Note: This setting is available on ly w hen your phone is connected to a headset, loopset or to an approved car kit. This feature applies only to voice calls.
[ 77 ] P ersonalize you r phone 12 • ADJUST VOLUME CONTROL Y ou set your volume by adjusting the earpiece volume buttons. See “About your phone” for an illustration of volume control keys located on the left side of the 8 390. • CHOOSE THE DISPLAY L ANGUAGE Y ou can choose your phone’s display language.
12 [ 78 ] If this is the first time you have set the clock, the phone asks you to enter the date. Enter the date in mmdd yyyy form at and p res s OK . Select the time format 1 Press Menu 4 2 1 3 ( Se tti ngs > Time setting s > Clock > Time f orm at ).
[ 79 ] P ersonalize you r phone 12 • USE CALLER GROUPS Y ou can add phone book entrie s to one of f ive caller groups, a nd assign a unique ringing tone or graphic to that group. This enables you to identify callers from that caller group by their unique ringing tone or graphic.
12 [ 80 ] Set your phone to ring only for a caller group Y ou c an set your phon e to r ing only when peopl e from cert ain caller groups call you, and to be silent for all other call groups. For example, if you do not want to be disturbed unless a fam ily member calls, you would follow these steps.
[ 8 1 ] P ersonalize you r phone 12 Use group graphics Each caller group has a graphic (picture) associated with it. When you get a ca ll from s omeon e whom you ha ve assi gned to a calle r group , the g raphi c associated with that group flashes on the screen.
12 [ 82 ] • DOWNLOAD RINGING TON ES Y ou can download up to 5 ringing tones to replace the Pe r s o n a l entries in your list of ringing tones. [ 83 ] P ersonalize you r phone 12 • CHANGE XPRESS-ON™ COLOR COVERS To personalize your 8390, you can change the fron t and back covers. Nokia Xpress-on TM covers are available in several fashion colors. Extra covers may be purchased from your authorized Nokia dealer .
