11 En Connections Connecting the AV Receiver Connecting the Sp eaker Cables The following illustration shows which spea ker should be connected to each pair of terminals. If you’re using only one surround back speaker, connect it to the SURROUND BACK or FRONT HIGH L terminals.
12 En Speaker Configurat ion The following table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you have. No matter how many spea ke rs you use, a powered subwoofer is recommended for a really powerful and solid bass.
13 En Using a Powered Subwo ofer To find the best position for your subwoofer, while playing a movie or some music with go od bass, experiment by placing your subwoofer at various po sitions within the room, and choose the one that provides the most satisfying results.
14 En Connecting AV componen ts • Before making any AV connections, read the manuals supplied with your AV components. • Don’t connect the power cord until you’ve completed and double-check ed all AV connections. • Push plugs in all the way to make good connect ions (loose connections can cause noise or malfunctions).
15 En Connect your components to the appropriate jacks. The default input assi gnments are shown below. ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ page 40 ).

17 En *4 When you connect your pe rsonal computer to PC IN and select the corresponding input sel ector, the video of the personal com puter is output from the HDMI outputs. However, if you have assigned the HDMI inputs to th e same input selector, the AV receive r will output signals received from the HDMI inputs instead of signals from PC IN .
18 En With u (Remote Interactive) , you can use th e following special functions: ■ System On/Auto Power On When you start playback on a component connected via u while the AV receiver is on Standby, the AV receiver will au tomatically tu rn on and select that component as the input source.
19 En This section explains how to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The AV receiver won’t pick up any radi o signals without any antenna connected, so you must c onnect the antenna to use the tuner.

23 En Extended Mode (Music) control The music content informati on is displayed (lists are displayed), and you can control the music content while looking at the screen. Top screen list: Playlists, Ar tists, Albums, Genres, Songs, Composers, Shuffle Songs, Now Playing.
24 En Listening to Other Internet Radio To listen to other internet radio stations , insert the following step after step 1 in the “Listening to vTuner Internet Radio” section. Registering My Favorit es *1 You can add the currently playing song or station to the “ My Favorites ”.
25 En This section explains how to play music files on a computer or media server through the AV receiver (Server Playback). Windows Media Player 11 Set up This section explains how to configure Windows Media Player 11 so that the AV recei ver can play the music files stored on your computer.
26 En Using Remote Playback Using the Tuner With the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. You can store your favor ite st ations as presets for quick selection.
27 En ■ Tuning into stations by frequenc y You can tune into AM and FM stations directly by entering the appropriate frequency. Presetting AM/F M Stations You can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite AM/FM radio stations as presets. Note • You can name your radio presets for easy identif ication ( ➔ page 47 ).
28 En Using Basic Functions With the supplied calibrated microphone, Audyssey 2EQ ® automatical ly determines the number o f speakers connected , their size for purposes of bass management, optimum crosso ver frequencies t o the subwoofer (if present), and distances from the primary listening position.
29 En Note • You can cancel Audyssey 2EQ Room Correction a nd Speaker Setup at any point in this proced ure simply by disconnecting the setup microphone. • Do not connect or disconnect any speakers during Audyssey 2EQ Room Correc tion and Speaker Setup.
30 En Error Messages While Audyssey 2EQ ® Room Correction and Speaker Setup is in progress, one of the error messages be low may appear. The options are: ` Retry : Try again. ` Cancel : Cancel Audyssey 2EQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup. • Ambient noise is too high.

34 En Dolby Pro Logic IIx *2 Dolby Pro Logic II Dolby Pro Lo gic IIx expands any 2-channel source for 7 .1-channel playback. It provides a very natural and seamless surrou nd-sound experi ence that fully envelops the listener. As well as music and movies, video games can also benefit from the dramatic spatial effects and vivid imaging.

36 En The Home menu provides you qu ick access to frequently used menus without having to go throu gh the long standard menu. This menu enab les you to change settings and view the current information. Note *1 For the PORT input selector, the name of Universal Port Option Dock will be displayed.
37 En You can display various info rmation about the current input source as follows. (Components connected to the UNIVERSAL PORT jack are excluded.) The following information ca n typically be displayed. *1 If the input signal is analog, “ Analog ” is displayed.
38 En This section explains how to record t he selected inpu t source to a component with recording capability, and how to record audio and vide o from different sources. AV Recording Audio sources can be recorded to a recorder (e.g., cassette tape deck, CDR, MD record er).
39 En Advanced Op erations Advanced Setup The on-screen setup menus a ppear on the connected TV and provide a convenient way to change the AV receiver’s various settings. Sett ings are organized into 9 categories on the main menu . Carry out the settings by u sing the on-screen display.
40 En Main Menu Input/Output Assig n Monitor Out You can specify the output resolution for the HDMI OUT and have the AV receiver upconvert the picture resolution as necessary to match the reso lution supported by your TV. ■ Resolution ` Through : Select this to pass video through the AV receiver at the same resolution and with no conversion.
41 En Component Video Input If you connect a video component to a component video input, you must assign that input to an input selector. For example, if you connect your Blu-ray Disc/DVD player to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2 , you must assign “ IN2 ” to the “ BD/DVD ” input selector.
42 En Speaker Setti ngs ■ Powered Zone 2 ` No ` Yes : Zone 2 speakers can be used. (P owered Zone 2 enabled). Note • Before you change this setting, turn down the volume. • When the “ Powered Zone 2 ” setting is set to “ Ye s ”, the surround back or front hi gh speakers cannot be used.
43 En ■ Double Bass ` On ` Off Turn this setting on to boost bass output by feeding bass sounds from the front left, right, and cen ter channels to the subwoofer. Note • This function can be set only if the “ Subwoofer ” setting is set to “ Yes ”, and the “ Front ” setting is set to “ Full Band ”.
44 En Main menu Audio Adjust With the Audio Adjust functions and settings, you can adjust the sound and listening modes as you like. Multiple x/Mono ■ Multiple x Input Channe l ` Main ` Sub ` Main/Sub This setting determi nes wh ich channel of a stereo multiplex source is output.
45 En DTS ■ Neo:6 Musi c Center Im age ` 0 to 2 to 5 The DTS Neo:6 Music list eni ng mode creates 6-channel surround sound from 2-channel st ereo sources. With this setting, you can specify by how much the front left and right channel output is attenuated in order to create the center channel.
46 En ■ Reference Level Audyssey Dynamic EQ ® Reference Level Offset ` 0dB : This should be used wh en listening to movies. ` 5dB : Select this setting for cont ent that has a very wide dynamic range, such as classica l music. ` 10dB : Select this setting for jazz or other music that has a wider dynamic range.
47 En IntelliVolume ■ IntelliVolume ` –12dB to 0dB to +12dB in 1 dB steps. With IntelliVolume, you can se t the input level for each input selector individually. This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others.
48 En Picture Adjust Using Picture Adjust, you can adjust the picture quality and reduce any noise a ppearing on the screen. To view the TV pictur e while setting, press ENTER . To return to the previous screen, press RETURN . ■ Wide Mode *1*2 This setting determi nes the aspect ra tio.
49 En Note •“ Picture Adjust ” cannot be used with the NET input selector. *1 This procedure can also be perf ormed on the remote controller by using the Home menu ( ➔ page 36 ). *2 When a 3D video source is input, “ Wide Mode ” is fixed to “ Full ”.
50 En You can assign a default list ening mode to each input source that will be select ed automatically when you select each input source. For exam ple, you can set the default listening mode to be used with Dolby Digital input signals.
51 En Main menu Hardware Setup Remote ID ■ Remote ID ` 1 , 2 , or 3 When several Onkyo components are used in the same room, their remote ID codes may overlap. To differentiate the AV receiver from the other components, you can change its remote ID from “ 1 ”, to “ 2 ” or “ 3 ”.
52 En ■ HDMI Through ` Off ` Auto : Detects the signal and automa tically selects the input source. ` BD/DVD , VCR/DVR , CBL/SAT , GAME , AUX , TV/CD , PORT : Selects the input source for which the HDMI Through function is enabled.
53 En Network This section explains how to configure the AV receiver’s network settings manually. If your router’s DHCP server is enabled, you don’t need to change any of these settings, as the AV receive r is set to use DHCP to configure itself automatical ly by default (i.
54 En Main menu Remote Controller Setup Remote Mode Setup See “Looking up for Remote Control Code” ( ➔ page 61 ). With this pref erence, you can protect you r settings by locking the setup menus.
55 En Late Night ■ Late Night For Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus source s, the options are: ` Off ` Low : Small reduction in dynamic range. ` High : Large reduction in dynamic range. For Dolby TrueHD sources, the options are: ` Auto : The Late Night function is set to “ On ” or “ Off ” automatically.
56 En Zone 2 In addition to the main listen ing room, you can also enjoy playb ack in anothe r room, which we call Zone 2. For either of the rooms, you can specify a different input source. There are two ways you can connect Zone 2 speakers: 1. Connect them directly to the AV receiver.

You can use the AV receiver’s remote controller to operate your iPod/iPhone.
59 En ■ Status Messages If either of the following me ssages is not displayed on the AV receiver’s display, check the connection to your iPod/iPhone. • P ORT Reading The AV receiver is checking the connection with the dock. • P ORT Not Support The AV receiver do not support the connected dock.

61 En Controlling Other Components You can use the AV receiver’s remote controller to control your other AV compone nts, including those made by other manufacturers. Th is section ex plains how to ent er the remote control code for a compon ent that you want to control: DVD, TV, CD , etc.
62 En Onkyo components that are connected via u are controlled by pointing the remote controller at the AV receiver, not the component. Th is allows you to control components that are out of view, in a rack, for example.

73 En Firmware Update To update the firmware of the AV receiver, you can choose from the following two methods: update via network, or update via USB storage. Choose the one that best suits your environment. Before proceeding with the update, please read the co rresponding explanations carefully.
74 En Troubleshooting Case 1: If “ No Update ” is displayed on the front display of the AV receiver, it m eans that th e firmware has already been updated. You do not need to do anything further .
