12 En About Home Theater Thanks to the A V receiv er’ s superb capabilities, you can enjoy surround sound wi th a real sense of movement in your ow n home—just like being in a movie theater or concert hall. W ith Blu-ra y Discs or DVDs, you can enjoy DTS and Dolby Digital.
13 En Connections Connecting the A V Receiver Speaker Configura tion The follo wing table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you ha ve. For 7.1-channel surround-s ound playback, you need 7 speakers and a po wered subwoofer .
14 En Connecting the Speaker Cab les Screw-type speak er terminals Using Banana Plugs (North American models) • If you are using b anana plugs, tighten the sp eaker terminal before inserting the b anana plug. • Do not insert the speaker code directly in to the center hole of the speaker terminal.
15 En Using Dipole Spea kers Y ou can use dipole speakers for the sur round and surround back speakers. Dipole speakers output the same sound in tw o directions. Dipole speakers typically ha ve an arro w printed on them to indicate how the y should be positioned.
16 En If you want to use a more powerful po wer amplif ier and use the A V recei ver as a preamp, connect it to the PRE O UT jacks, and connect all speak ers and the subwoofer to the po wer amplifier . If you hav e a powered subwoofer , connect it to this A V recei ver’ s SUBWOOFER PRE OUT jack.
17 En Connected ima ge with A V components • Before making any A V connections, read th e manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve comp leted and double-checked all A V connections. • Push plugs in all the way to make good connecti ons (loose connecti ons can cause noise or malfunc- tions).
18 En Connect your components to the appropr iate jack s. The default input assi gnments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 42 ). Refer to “ About HDMI” ( ➔ 95 ) and “Using an RIHD-compat ible TV , Player, or Recorder” ( ➔ 96 ).

20 En Note *1 Connect a turntable (MM) that has built-in a phono preamp to TV/CD IN or connect it to PHONO IN with the phono preamp turned off . If your turntabl e (MM) doesn’t h ave a p hono preamp, connect to PHONO IN .
21 En This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The A V receiv er won’t pick up an y radi o signals without any antenn a connected, so you must co nnect the antenna to use the tuner .
22 En The A V recei ver supports se vera l connection formats for compat ibility with a wide range of A V equipment. The format you choose will depend on the formats supported by your co mponents.
23 En Note •T h e “ Monitor Out ” setting will be automatically switched to “ Analog ” ( ➔ 42 ) if not connected to both outputs when “ Both ” is selected or if not c onnected to a priority output when “ Both(Main) ” or “ Both(Sub) ” is selected.
24 En T ur ning On & Basic Operations T urning On/Off the A V Receiver (European, A ustralian and Asian models) T o comple tely shut down the A V receiver, set PO WER to the OFF position ( ). 25 En Basic Operations Y ou can determine the language used for the onscreen setup menus. See “Lang uage” in the “OSD Setup” ( ➔ 55 ). ■ Operating on the A V receiver ■ Operating with the remo te controller Y ou can display v arious info rmation about the current input source as follows.
26 En Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiv er. Tip • T o unmute, press MUTING again or adjust the volume. • The Mute functi on is cancelled when the A V rece i ver is set to Standb y . W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiv er to turn off aut omatically after a specif ied period.
27 En Note *1 If Pure Audio or Direct listening mode is selected, “ Dynamic EQ ” and “ Dynamic V olume ” cannot be selected. *2 Only when you have selected “ Custom ” in the “ Picture Mo.
28 En *1 Depending on the start-up time of Blu-ray Disc/D VD player , the A V rec eiv er may not activate this playback command. In this case, press 1 on the remote controller . T urning Off th e Components *1 When MY MUSIC is selected, with the default settings, this will not be performed.
29 En Note • Make the room as quiet as possi ble. Background noise and Radio Frequency Interferen ce (RFI) can disrupt the room measure- ments. Close windo ws, televisions , radios, air conditioners, flu- orescent lights , home appliance s, light dimmers , or other devices.
30 En Note • When Audyssey MultEQ ® Room Correction and Speak er Setup is complete, the “ Equalizer ” will be set to “ Audyssey ” ( ➔ 47 ). The A udyssey indicator will light ( ➔ 9 ). • Y ou can cancel Audyssey Mu ltEQ R oom Correction and Speaker Setup at any point in th is procedure simply by discon- necting the setup microphone.
31 En Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vo rite stations as presets for quick selection.
32 En Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fav orite FM/AM radio stations as presets. Note • Y ou can name your radio presets for easy identification ( ➔ 52 ). Its name is displayed instead of the band and frequency . Selecting Presets Tip • Y ou can also use the remote c ontroller’ s number buttons to select a preset directly .
33 En Finding Statio ns by T ype (PTY) Y ou can search for radio stations by type. Listening to T raffic News (TP) Y ou can search for stations that broadcast traf fic ne ws. ■ RDS program types (PTY) 1 Pre ss RT/PTY/TP twice. The current program type appears on the display .

41 En Advanced Operations Adv anced Setup The on-screen setup menus a ppear on the connected TV and provide a con venient way to change the A V rece iv er’ s various settin gs. Settings are organized into 9 cate gories on the main menu . Carry out the settings by using the on-screen display .

45 En Digital A udio Input If you connect a component to a digital audio input, you must assign that input to an i nput selector . F or example, if you connect your CD player to the OPTICAL IN 1 , you must assign “ OPT1 ” to the “ TV/CD ” input selector .
46 En Speaker Configur ation W ith these settings, you can specify which speakers are connected and a crossover frequ ency for each speaker . Specify “ Full Band ” for speakers that can output low fre- quency bass sounds adequ ately , for e xample, speakers with a good sized woofer .
47 En ■ Left, Fr ont Wide Left, Fr ont High Left, Center, Front High Right, Front Wide Right, Right, Surr Right, Surr Back Right, Surr Back Left, Surr Left, Subwoofer ` Specify the distance from the each speaker to your lis- tening position.
48 En THX A udio Setup W ith the “ Surr Back Speaker Spaci ng ” setting, you can specify the distance between your surround back speakers. If you’ re using a THX-certif ied subwoofer , set the “ THX Ultra2/Select2 Subwo ofer ” setting to “ Ye s ”.
49 En Main menu Aud i o Ad j u s t W ith the Audio Adjust functions and settings, you can adjust the sound and listening modes as you like. Multiplex/Mono ■ Multiple x This setting determine s which channel of a stereo multi- plex source is output.
50 En Note •I f t h e “ Surr Back ” setting is set to “ None ” ( ➔ 46 ), this setting cannot be selected. •I f t h e “ Front High ” or “ Front W ide ” setting is enabled ( ➔ 46 ), this setting is fixed at “ Manual ”.
51 En ■ Reference Level A udyssey Dynamic EQ ® Reference Le vel Offset ` 0dB : It should be used when listening to movies. ` 5dB : Select this set ting for content that h as a very wide dynamic range, such as classical music. ` 10dB : Select this set ting for jazz or ot her music that has a wider dynamic range.
52 En IntelliV olume ■ IntelliV olume ` –12dB to 0dB to +12dB in 1 dB steps. W ith IntelliV olume, you can se t the input level for each input selector individ ually . Th is is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others.
53 En Picture Adjust Using “ Picture Adjust ”, you can adjust the picture qual- ity and reduce any noise appearing on the screen. T o view the TV pictur e while setting, press ENTER .
54 En ■ Noise Reduction *2 ` Off : Noise reduction of f. ` Low : Low noise r eduction. ` Mid : Medium noise reduction. ` High : High noise reduction. W ith this setting, you can reduce noise appearing on the screen. Note •I f t h e “ Game Mo de ” setting is set to “ On ” ( ➔ 53 ), this setting is fix ed at “ Off ”.
55 En ■ DTS/DTS-ES/DTS-HD W ith this setting, you can specify the listening mode to be used when a DTS or DTS-HD High Resolution Audio format digital audio signal is played (D VD, LD, CD, etc.). Speci fies the def ault listening mode for DTS- HD Master Audio sources, su ch as Blu-ray or HD D VD (input via HDMI).
56 En Tu n e r For FM/AM tuning to wo rk properly , you must specify the FM/AM frequency step used in your area. Note that when this setting i s changed, all radio presets w ill be deleted. ■ FM/AM Frequency Step (North American and T aiwan mo dels) ` 200kHz/10kHz : Select if 200 kHz/10 kHz steps are used in your area.
57 En • When the source equi pmen t is connected with the u connec- tion, it may malfunction if “ HDMI Control (RIHD) ” is set to “ On ” . ■ Audio Return Channel ` Off : Select “ Off ” if you don’t want to use audio return channel (ARC) function.
58 En ■ Receiver ` via NET : Y ou can update the firmware via In ternet. Check the network connection before update. ` via USB : Y ou can update the firmware from a USB mass stor- age device. Y ou can update the A V receiv er ’ s fi rmware. Do not shut- down the po wer of the A V receiv er while update.
59 En Late Night W ith the Late Night functi on, you can reduce the dynamic range of Dolby Dig ital material so that you can still hear quiet parts e ven whe n listening at lo w v olume le vels— ideal for watching movies la te at night when you don’t want to disturb an yone.
60 En A udio Selector Y ou can set priorities of audio output when there are both digital and analog inputs. ■ A udio Selector ` ARC : The audio signal from your TV tuner can be sent to the HDMI OUT (North American and T aiwan models ) / HDMI OUT MAIN (European, A ustralian and Asian models) of the A V recei ver.
61 En NET/USB The A V recei ver is network-r eady , which means you can hook it up to your home network with a standard Ethernet cable and enjoy the music files stored on your computer or media server . If your network is connected to the Internet, you can also enjoy Internet radio.
62 En T o receiv e Internet radio, you must connect the A V receiv er to a network with Internet access ( ➔ 61 ). Y ou can select Internet rad io stations by connecting to the A V recei ver from your computer and selecting stations in your W eb browser .
63 En Registering Pre sets *1 Once you’ ve added a station to the list, simply select it on the Internet Radio screen, and then press ENTER to start playback. *1 From the search results you can pres et the stations and songs but cannot listen to them directly .
64 En Random Playback The Random function can only be set while the PLA Y screen is displayed. T o play songs in random order , during play back (or while playback is paused or stopped), press RANDOM . All of the songs in the current fold er will be played in random order .

69 En Random Playback The Random function can only be set while the PLA Y screen is displayed. T o play songs in random order , while the list of songs is displayed, press RANDOM . All of the songs in the cur- rent folder will be played in random order .
70 En Multi Zone In addition to your main listening room, you can also enjoy pl ayback in the other room, or as we call Multi Zone. And, you can select a different source for each room. There are two w ays you can connect Zone 2 speak ers: 1. Connect them directly to the A V receiv er.
71 En Connecting Y our Zone 3 Speakers to an Amp in Zone 3 This setup allo ws 7. 1-channel playback in your main lis- tening room and 2-channel ster eo playback in Zone 3, with a dif ferent source in each room. Note • With the default settings, the Zone 3 v olume must be set on the Zone 3 amp.

73 En Contr olling Zone 2/3 with the Remote Contr oller Note • T o control Zone 2/3, you must press the remote controller’ s ZONE fir st . • ZONE turns red while Zone 2 is on, and green while Zone 3 is on. Note • Only analog input sources are output b y the ZONE 2/3 PRE OUT and FRONT WID E/ZONE 2 L/R terminals.
74 En T o control the A V rec eiv er with the remote controller while you’ re in Zone 2 or Zone 3, you’ll need a commer- cially a vaila ble multiroom remote con trol kit for each zone.
75 En Controlling iP od & Other Components Contr olling iP od USB can be used to play music f iles stored on iPod/ iPhone, which can be plugged into the A V recei ver’ s USB port. Playing Music Files on the iP od/iPhone This section explains ho w to play music files on the iPod/ iPhone.
76 En *2 The following iPod mode ls ar e not supported in Standard Mode. These iPod models can on ly be controlled in Extended Mode. *3 When you disconnect the iPod/iP hone, the A V receiver stores the mode. This means that if you disconnect when in Extended Mode, the A V receive r will start in Extended Mode when you next conn ect the iPod/iPhone.
77 En UP-A1 Dock W ith the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the music, photo, or movie stored on your Apple iPod through the A V receiv er and enjoy great sound.
78 En RI Dock W ith the RI Dock, you can easily play the music stored on your Apple iPod through the A V receiver and enjoy great sound, and watch iPod slidesho ws and videos on your TV .

80 En Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V receiv er’ s remote controller (RC-771M) to control your other A V components, includ- ing those made by other ma nufacturers. This section explains ho w to enter the re mote control code (with the default underlined) for a component that you want to con- trol: D VD, TV , CD, etc.
81 En 8 When you ha ve a networ k connection, select the brand name again, and then press ENTER . When you do NO T have a network connection, use q / w to select the brand name, and then press ENTER . The following screen appears. 9 The A V receiv er accesses and sear ches the database.
82 En Y ou’ ll need to enter a code for each component that you want to control. Note • The remote control codes provid ed are correct at the time of printing, but are su bject to change. Onkyo components that are connected via u are con- trolled by pointing the remo te controll er at the A V receiv er, not the component.
83 En Y ou can reset a REMO TE MODE to its default remote control code. Y ou can reset the remot e controller to its default setting s. By pressing REMO TE MODE that’ s been programm ed with the remote control code for your component, you can control your component as below .
84 En Note • With some components, certai n button s may not work as expected, and some may not work at all. ✔ : A vailable b uttons *1 The p func tion is not supported. The p sup- ported by the A V receiv er is the CEC system control function of the HDMI standard.
85 En V ia onscreen menu, you can spec ify what actions will be taken b y the Easy macro command in the Easy macro mode ( ➔ 27 ). Here ar e the default settings. Activities Setup 1 Pre ss RECEIVER f ollowed by SETUP . The main menu appears onscreen.
86 En The A V recei ver’ s remote controller can learn the com- mands of other remote contro llers. By transmit ting, for example, the Play command from you r CD player’ s remote controller , the remote control ler can learn it, and then transmit the exact same c ommand when its 1 is pressed in the CD remote mode.
87 En Note • The following b uttons cannot learn new comman ds: REMO TE MODE , ALL OFF , MY MO VIE , MY TV , MY MUSIC . • The remote controller can lear n approximately 70 to 90 com- mands, although this will be less if commands that use a lot of memory are learned.

95 En About HDMI Designed to meet the increased demand s of digital TV , HDMI (High Definition Mult im edia Interface) is a new digita l interface standard for connect ing TVs, projectors, Blu-ray Disc/D VD players, set-top box es, and other video compo- nents.
