5 Bef ore Using the TX-SR501/TX-SR501E The W orldwide model has a voltage selector for compatibil- ity with po wer systems around the world. Before you plug in this model, make sure that the v oltage selector is set to the correct voltage for your area.
6 Contr ols & Connectors Front P anel For detailed information, refer to the pages in parenthesis. A PO WER switch (24) The North American model doesn’ t have this switch. This is the main power switch. When set to OFF , the TX-SR501/TX-SR501E is completely shutdown.
7 Controls & Connector s —Continued G MEMOR Y button (30, 31) This button is used when storing and deleting radio presets. H FM MODE button (31) This button is used to select the FM radio Stereo and Mono modes. It’ s also used when deleting radio presets.

20 Installing Y our Speaker s Y ou can use two sets of speakers with your TX-SR501/ TX-SR501E: speaker set A and speaker set B. W ith speak er set A , which should be installed in your main listening .
21 Installing Y our Speakers —Continued Before you connect your speakers, read the follo wing: • Disconnect the po wer cord from the wall outlet. • Read the instructions supplied with your speak ers. •P ay close attention to speak er wiring polarity .
22 Connecting Antenna This chapter explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna, and how to connect commer - cially av ailable outdoor FM and AM antennas.
23 Connecting Antenna —Continued If you cannot achie ve good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a commercially av ailable outdoor FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, but usable results can sometimes be obtained when installed in an attic or loft.

25 Po wering Up & Setting Up the TX-SR501/TX-SR501E —Continued If y ou’ve connected a MiniDisc r ecorder to the T APE inputs, you can set the TX-SR501/TX-SR501E so that “MD” appears on the display instead of “T APE. ” Simply press and hold the [T APE] button until “MD” appears (about two seconds).
26 Configuring Speaker Set A This chapter describes ho w to configure speaker set A to achie ve the best results from your surround sound system. There is no speaker configuration for speaker set B.
27 Configuring Speaker Set A —Continued W ith this function you can adjust the volume of each indi vid- ual speaker so that you can hear all speakers equally at the listening position. Note: Y ou cannot use this function while the TX-SR501/ TX-SR501E is muted (see page 33).

Note: When you turn on speaker set B, the listening mode for speaker set A is set to Stereo. W ith this function you can adjust the brightness of the dis- play .
33 Common Functions —Continued W ith this function you can temporarily mute the output of the TX-SR501/TX-SR501E. Muting is cancelled when the TX-SR501/TX-SR501E is set to Standby . W ith this function you can adjust the volume le vel of each indi vidual speaker as you like.
34 Using the Listening Modes W ith its built-in surround-sound decoders and DSP pro- grams, the TX-SR501/TX-SR501E can transform your home listening room into a movie theater or concert hall. To get the most from surround sound, it’ s important that you install and configure your speakers correctly .
35 Using the Listening Modes —Continued The listening modes are explained belo w . Basic Modes Direct: The selected input source is fed directly to the po wer- amp stages and through to the front left and right speakers with minimal processing.

37 A udio Adjust Functions These functions only work with speaker set A. Audio Adjust provides various functions for adjusting the sound, including se veral especially for use with Dolby Digi- tal, DTS, and Pro Logic II material. The follo wing table lists the Audio Adjust functions, their ranges and default v alues.
38 A udio Adjust Functions —Continued The Audio Adjust functions are explained belo w . ■ Bass W ith this function you can boost or cut lo w-frequency sounds output by the front speakers from –12 dB to +12 dB in 2 dB steps.
39 Recor ding This chapter explains ho w to record the selected input source to an A V component with recording capability , and how to record audio and video from two dif ferent sources. Y ou can record only to A V components that are connected to the T APE OUT or VIDEO 1 OUT connectors.
