11 En Connecting the A V Receiver Speaker Configura tion The follo wing table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you ha ve. For 7.1-channel surround-sound playback, you need se ven speakers and a po wered subwoofer .
12 En • Don’t connect mo re than one cable to each speak er ter- minal. Doing so may damage the A V receiver. • Don’t connect one speaker to se veral terminals.
13 En Note • The fron t high speakers ca n also be connected to the SUR R B ACK OR FR ONT HIGH SPEAKERS terminals. When doing so, set “ Surr Back/Front High ” in Speaker Setup to “ Front High ” ( ➔ 37 ).
14 En Connected image with A V components • Before making any A V connections, read the manuals supplied with your A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve co mpleted and double-checke d all A V connections. • Push plugs in all the way to ma ke good connections (loo se connections can cause noise or malfunc- tions).
15 En Connect your components to the appropriate jacks. The default input assignments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 35 ). Refer to “ About HDMI” ( ➔ 66 ) and “Using an RIHD-compatibl e TV , Player , or Recorder” ( ➔ 67 ).
16 En Connect your components to the appropr iate jack s. The default input assi gnments are sho wn below . ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ 36 ). Note • When you connect to both A U X INPUT A UDIO jacks and A UX INPUT LINE IN ja ck at the same time, A UX INPUT LINE IN jack will be giv en a higher pr iority .
17 En Wi t h u (Remote Interactiv e), you can use the following special functions: ■ System On/A uto P ower On When you start playback on a component connected via u while the A V recei ver is on Standb y , the A V recei ver will automaticall y turn on and select that com- ponent as the input source.
18 En The A V recei ver supports se vera l connection formats for compat ibility with a wide range of A V equipment. The format you choose will depend on the formats supported by your co mponents.
19 En T urning On/Off the A V Receiver Tu r n i n g O n Pre ss ON/ST ANDBY on the front panel. or Pre ss RECEIVER f ollowed by ON/ST ANDBY on the remote controller . The A V receiv er comes on, the display lights, and the ST ANDBY ind icator go es off.
20 En Basic Operations Y ou can determine the langua ge used for the onscreen setup menus. See “OSD Setup ” ( ➔ 44 ). ■ Operating on the A V receiver ■ Operating with the remote contr oller Y ou can display v arious information about the current input source as follo ws.
21 En Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiv er. Tip • T o unmute, press MUTING again or adjust the volume. • The Mute function is cancelled when the A V receiver is set to Standby . W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiv er to turn off au tomatically after a specif ied period.
22 En Note *1 If Pure Audio ( European , A ustralian and Asian ) or Direct listening mode is selected, “ Dynamic EQ ” and “ Dynamic V olume ” cannot be selected.
23 En Using A udyssey 2EQ ® T o create a listeni ng en vi ronment in your home theater that all listeners will enjoy , Audyssey 2EQ takes measure- ments at up to three positions within the listening area. Position the microphone at ear he ight of a seated listener with the microphone tip pointe d directly at the ceiling using a tripod.
24 En Note • When Audyssey 2EQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup is complete, the “ Equalizer ” will be set to “ Audyssey ” ( ➔ 38 ). The A udyssey indicator will light ( ➔ 8 ). • Y ou can cancel Audyssey 2EQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup at any point in this proced ure simply by disconnecting the setup microphone.
25 En Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vo rite stations as presets for quick selection.
26 En Y ou can store a combination of up to 40 of your fav orite FM/AM radio stations as presets. Note • Y ou can name your radio presets for easy identification ( ➔ 41 ). Its name is displayed instead of the band and frequency . Selecting Presets Tip • Y ou can also use the remote c ontroller’ s number buttons to select a preset directly .
27 En Finding Statio ns by T ype (PTY) Y ou can search for radio stations by type. Listening to T raffic News (TP) Y ou can search for stations that broadcast traf fic ne ws. ■ RDS program types (PTY) 1 Pre ss RT/PTY/TP twice. The current program type appears on the display .
28 En Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the selected input source to a component with recording capability , and how to record audio and video from different sou rces. Connecting a Recor ding Component Note • The A V receiv er must be t urned on for reco rding.

33 En Onkyo-Original DSP Listening Modes Note *1 (North American and T aiwan models) This listening mode is not available. *2 When the input source contains th e encoded front high channel, front high speak ers output the sound. *3 If there are no surroun d back speakers, or Powered Zone 2 is being used, Dolby Pro Logic II is used.
34 En Ad vanced Setup The on-screen setup menus appear on the connected TV and provide a con venient w ay to change the A V recei ver’ s vario us settings. Settings ar e organized into nine catego- ries on the main menu . Carry out the settings b y using the on-screen display .
35 En Explanatory Notes Main Menu Input/Output Assign Monitor Out Y ou can specify the output resolution for the HDMI OUT and COMPONENT VIDEO MONITOR OUT and ha ve the A V receiv er upcon vert t he picture resolution as nece s- sary to match the resolution supported b y your TV .
36 En Component Video Input If you connect a video component to a component video input, you must assign that input to an input selector . For example, if you connect your Blu-ray Disc/D VD player to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2 , you must assign “ IN2 ” to the “ BD/D VD ” input selecto r .
37 En ■ Speakers T ype ` Normal : Select this if you’ ve conne cted your front speakers normally . ` Bi-Amp : Select this if you’ ve bi-amped your front speak ers. Note • Powered Zone 2 cannot be used if “ Speakers T ype ” setting is set to “ Bi-Amp ” ( ➔ 50 ).
38 En Speaker Distance Here you can specify the distan ce from each speaker to the listening position so that the sound from each speaker arriv es at the listener’ s ears as the sound designer intended. ■ Unit ` feet : Distances ca n be set in feet.
39 En Dolby ■ PLIIx Music (2c h Input) These settings apply to only 2-channel stereo sources. If you’ re not using any surround back speakers, these settings apply to Dolby Pr o Logic II, not Dolby Pro Logic IIx. Panorama ` On : Panorama function on.
40 En Items can be set individuall y for each input selector . Main menu Source Setup A udysse y When Audyssey 2EQ ® Room Correction and Speaker Setup is complete, the “ Equalizer ” setting ( ➔ 38 ) will be set to “ Au d y s s e y ” and the “ Dynamic EQ ” will be se t to “ On ”.
41 En IntelliV olume ■ IntelliV olume ` –12dB to 0dB to +12dB in 1 dB steps. W ith IntelliV olume, you can set the input le vel for each input selector individually . This is useful if one of your source components is louder or quieter than the others.
42 En T o correct a character: Note • T o name a radio preset, use TUNER to select AM or FM, and then select the preset ( ➔ 42 ). • Y ou cannot enter a custom name for SIRIUS radio presets. T o restore a custom name to the default, erase the custom name by en tering an empty white space for each lette r .
43 En ■ Picture Mode *1*2 ` Thru : The following settings are set to the default values: “ Film Mode ”, “ Edge Enhancement ”, “ Noise Reduction ”, “ Brightness ”, “ Contrast ”, .

45 En Main menu Hard ware Setup Remote ID ■ Remote ID ` 1 , 2 , or 3 When sev eral Onkyo components are used in the same room, their remote ID codes may overlap. T o dif ferenti- ate the A V recei ver from th e other components, you can change its remote ID from “ 1 ”, to “ 2 ” or “ 3 ”.
46 En Note • When set to “ On ” and close the menu, the name of connect ed p -compatible components and “ RIHD On ” are dis- played on the A V receiver.
47 En Y ou can change v arious a udio settings by pressing A UDIO ( ➔ 21 ). Note These settings are disabl ed when: • a pair of headph ones is connected, or •t h e “ A udio TV Out ” setting is set to “ On ” ( ➔ 45 ) and an input selector other than HDMI is selected.
48 En Cinema Filter W ith the Cinema Filter , you can soften overly bright movie soundtracks, which are typically mixed for repro- duction in a movie theater .
49 En Zone 2 In addition to your main listeni ng room, you can also enjoy playback in the othe r room, or as we call Zone 2. And, you can select a different source for each room. There are two ways you can connect Zone 2 speakers: 1. Connect them directly to the A V recei ver.
50 En If you’ v e connected your Zone 2 speake rs to the A V receiv er, as explained in “C onnecting Y our Zone 2 Speak- ers Directly to the A V receiver” ( ➔ 49 ), you must set the “ Front High / Zone2 ” setting to “ Zone2 ”.

56 En Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V receiver’ s remote controller (RC-764M) to control your o ther A V components, includ- ing those made by other ma nufacturers. This section explains ho w to enter the re mote control code (with the default underlined) for a component that you want to con- trol: D VD, TV , CD, etc.
57 En Y ou’ll need to enter a code for each component that you want to control. Note • The remo te control code s provid ed are correct at the time of printing, but are subject to change. Onkyo components that are connected via u are con- trolled by pointing the remote controller at the A V receiv er, not the component.
58 En Yo u c a n r e s e t a REMOT E MODE to its default remote control code. Y ou can rese t the remote controller to its default sett ings. By pressing REMO TE MODE that’ s been progr ammed with the remote control c ode for your component, you can control your component as below .
