13 Remote Controller —Continued The remote controller can be used to control different components including the A V receiv er. The remote con- troller has a speci fi c operating mode for use with each type of component. Modes are selected by using the six REMO TE MODE buttons.

18 Connecting the A V Receiver • Before making any A V connections, read the manuals supplied with your other A V components. • Don ’ t connect the po wer cord until you ’ v e completed and double-checked all A V connections.
19 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Speaker Configuration For the best surround sound e xperience, you should con- nect sev en speakers and a po wered subwoofer . The following table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you ha ve.

21 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna, and ho w to connect commercially av ailable outdoor FM and AM antennas. The A V receiv er won ’ t pick up an y radio signals without any antenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .

26 Connecting the A V Receiver —Continued Hooking Up the Multichannel D VD Input If your D VD player supports multichannel audio formats such as D VD-Audio or SA CD, and it has a multichannel analog audio output, you can connect it to the A V receiv er ’ s multichannel D VD input.

37 T urning On the A V Receiver • Connect the A V receiv er ’ s po wer cord to a suitable wall outlet. Notes: • Befor e connecting the power cord, connect all of y our speakers and A V components. • T urning on the A V receiv er may cause a momentary power sur ge that might interfere with other electrical equipment on the same circuit.
38 Fir st Time Setup This section explains the settings that you need to make before using the A V recei ver for the v ery fi rst time. W ith the supplied speaker setup microphone, the Audyssey2EQ fu.
39 First Time Setup —Continued 2 Put the speaker setup micro- phone at measurement point 1 . Notes: • Make sure the microphone is hori- zontal. • If there ’ s an obstacle between the microphone and any speaker , the automatic setup will not work cor - rectly .
40 First Time Setup —Continued Notes : • When the automatic speaker setup is complete, the Equalizer Settings (page 71) will be set to “ Audyssey . ” • Y ou can cancel the automatic speaker setup at any point in this procedure simply by disconnecting the setup microphone.
41 First Time Setup —Continued Error Messa ges While the automatic speaker setup is in progress, one of the following error messages may appear: ❏ Ambient noise is too high This message appears if the background noise is too loud and the measurements cannot be performed properly .
42 First Time Setup —Continued Changing the Speaker Settings Manuall y In some situations, the measurements taken by the auto- matic speaker setup may not provide usable results. If running the speaker setup a second time still doesn ’ t pro- vide usable results, you ’ ll ha ve to set the speaker settings manually (see pages 67 – 71).
43 First Time Setup —Continued The onscreen setup menus are displayed on the connected TV and pro vide a con venient way to change the A V recei ver ’ s settings. (The onscreen menus do not appear on a TV that ’ s connected to the HDMI OUT (TX-SR604/604E/8460 only).
44 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect a component to a digital input jack, you must assign that jack to an input selector . F or example, if you connect your CD player to the OPTICAL IN2 jack, you should assign that jack to the CD input selec- tor .
45 First Time Setup —Continued HDMI Video Setup If you connect a video component to HDMI IN 1 or 2, you must assign that input to an input selector . F or exam- ple, if you connect your D VD player to HDMI IN 1, you must assign HDMI IN 1 to the D VD input selector .
46 First Time Setup —Continued Component Video Setup If you connect to a COMPONENT VIDEO IN, you must assign it to an input selector . F or example, if you connect your D VD player to COMPONENT IN 3, you should assign it to the D VD input selector .
47 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect an -capable Onkyo MiniDisc recorder , CD recorder , or next generation HDD-compat- ible component to the T APE IN/OUT or VIDEO 3 IN jacks, for to work properly , you must change this setting. This setting can only be changed on the A V receiv er.
48 First Time Setup —Continued Y ou must specify the TV system used in your area. Note: • This procedure can also be performed on the A V receiv er by using its [SETUP] button, arro w buttons, and [ENTER] button. Y ou must specify the AM frequency step used in your area.

50 Basic Operations —Continued The multichannel D VD input is for connecting a compo- nent with a 7.1-channel analog audio output, such as a D VD-Audio or SA CD-capable D VD player , or an MPEG decoder .
51 Basic Operations —Continued Y ou can adjust the brightness of the display . Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiver. W ith the sleep timer , you can set the A V receiv er to turn off automatically after a speci fi ed period.
52 Listening to the Radio W ith the built-in tuner you can enjo y AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vorite stations as presets for quick selection. Listening to the Radio T uning into Radio Stations ■ A uto T uning Mode When tuned into a station, the TUNED indicator appears.

64 Using the Listening Modes —Continued DTS-ES Matrix This mode is for use with DTS-ES Matrix soundtracks, which use a matrix-encoded back-channel for 6.1/7.1-channel playback. Use it with D VDs that bear the DTS-ES logo, especially those with a DTS-ES Matrix soundtrack.
65 Recor ding This section explains ho w to record the selected input source to a component with recording capability , and how to record audio and video from dif ferent sources. Notes: • The surround sound and DSP listening modes cannot be recorded.
66 Ad v anced Operations W ith the Late Night function, you can reduce the dynamic range of Dolby Digital material so that you can still hear quiet parts ev en when listening at low v olume lev els — ideal for watching movies late at night when you don ’ t w ant to disturb anyone.
67 Ad v anced Setup Some of the settings in this section are set automatically by the Automatic Speaker Setup function (see page 38). Here you can check the settings made by the Automatic Speaker Setup function, or set them manually , which is useful if you change one of the connected speakers after using the Automatic Speaker Setup function.
68 Adv anced Setup —Continued Low-P ass Filter f or the LFE Channel W ith this setting, you can specify the cutoff frequenc y of the LFE channel ’ s lo w-pass fi lter (LPF), which can be used to fi lter out unwanted hum. The LPF only applies to sources that use the LFE channel.
69 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Distance Here you can specify the distance from each speaker to the listening position so that the sound from each speaker arri ves at the listener ’ s ears as the sound designer intended. Notes: • The Center and Subwoofer distances can be set up to 5 ft.
70 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Level Calibration Here you can adjust the lev el of each speaker with the built-in test tone so that the v olume of each speaker is the same at the listening position. Note: The speakers cannot be calibrated while the output of the A V receiv er is muted or while a pair of headphones is connected.
71 Adv anced Setup —Continued Equalizer Setting Here you can adjust the EQ of individual speak ers. T o set the volume of indi vidual speakers see page 70. Notes: • When the listening mode is set to Direct or Pure Audio, no effect will be produced.
72 Adv anced Setup —Continued SW Input Sensitivity Some D VD players output the LFE channel from their subwoofer output at 15 dB higher than normal. Y ou can change the subwoofer sensiti vity to match your D VD player . Note that this setting only af fects signals con- nected to the SUBWOOFER input jack of the multi- channel D VD input.
73 Adv anced Setup —Continued The Audio Adjust functions are explained below . Input Channel Settings ■ Multiplex This setting determines which channel is output from a stereo multiplex source. Use it to select audio channels or languages with multiplex sources, multilingual TV broadcasts, and so on.
74 Adv anced Setup —Continued Y ou can assign a default listening mode to each input source that will be selected automatically when you select each input source. For e xample, you can set the default listening mode to be used with Dolby Digital input signals.
75 Adv anced Setup —Continued Y ou can set the input lev el for each input source. This is useful if some of your A V components are louder or qui- eter than others. IntelliV olume does not affect Zone 2. While this menu is shown onscreen, you can select each input source and set the lev els while listening to and comparing them.
76 Adv anced Setup —Continued Maximum V olume W ith this preference, you can prev ent the volume being set too high by specifying a maximum volume le vel.
77 Adv anced Setup —Continued W ith this preference, you can protect your settings by locking the setup menus. When the setup menus are locked, you cannot change any setting.
78 Adv anced Setup —Continued When using progressiv e scanning on your D VD player , you may fi nd that the picture and sound are out of sync. W ith this setting, you can correct this by delaying the audio signals. Y ou can set it from 0 to 100 milliseconds (ms) in 10 millisecond steps.
79 Zone 2 W ith the Zone 2 function, you can enjoy one input source in the main room and a different source in another room. There are two connection methods: using a recei ver/inte- grated amp in Zone 2 or using only a pair of speakers in Zone 2. 80 Zone 2 —Continued T o use Zone 2, you must make this setting. It enables the speakers connected to the ZONE 2 SPEAKERS termi- nals so that they produce sound when Zone 2 is used. Note: This procedure can also be performed on the A V receiv er by using its [SETUP] button, arro w buttons, and [ENTER] button.
81 Zone 2 —Continued This section explains ho w to turn Zone 2 on and off, how to select an input source for Zone 2, and how to adjust the volume for Zone 2. Controlling Zone 2 fr om the A V receiver Controlling Zone 2 with the Remote Controller Note: • T o control Zone 2, you must press the remote control- ler ’ s [ZONE 2] b utton fi rst.

83 Contr olling Other Components Y ou can use the A V receiv er ’ s remote controller (RC-651M) to control your other A V components, including those made by other manufacturers. This sec- tion explains ho w to enter the necessary remote control code for the component that you want to control (e.
84 Controlling Other Components —Continued Onkyo components that are connected via are con- trolled by pointing the remote controller at the A V receiv er, not the component. This allo ws you to control components that are out of view , in a rack, for example.
