Displa y & Displa y Buttons The displa y screen pro vides wor d-f or-wor d captions dur ing your conv er sation. The screen also displa ys the menu when you press the button.
T one Slide Contr ol The T one Slide Control allows you to adjust the quality of sound that comes through the handset to a frequency r ange that w orks best f or you. W ith the slide control, you can increase lo w- or high-frequency sounds f or utmost clar ity .

INST ALLA TION ■ 7 STEP 2 – Set Up the CapTel F or Desktop Use 1. Plug the A C adapter cord into the r ound pow er jack on the bottom of the CapT el . 2. Plug the telephone line cord into the fir st (left) telephone line jack. 3. Attac h the desktop/wall f ootplate, making sure the larg er side is along the top edge of the CapT el .
8 ■ CALLING & ANSWERING CALLING & ANSWERING Placing a Call with Captions Using the CapT el is easy—just pic k up the handset and dial: 1. V er ify that the Caption f eature is on. The red light ov er the button should be lit. If the light is not on when placing an outg oing call, tur n on the f eature by pressing the button.
Ans w ering a Call with Captions Because the captions are pro vided by a Captioning Ser vice, the per son calling you must first connect with the ser vice in order f or you to receiv e captions dur ing the call. Giv e your callers the toll-free Captioning Ser vice voice number (see pag e 1).
10 ■ CALLING & ANSWERING Dur ing the pause, the per son calling you hears the recorded messag e “Please hold, the person y ou hav e called will be with y ou shor tly , ” and will not hear y ou speak. 5. W atch the displa y . Y ou may begin speaking as soon as y ou see that the call has connected.
ADJUSTING THE SOUND Con v ersation V olume T o increase the o ver all volume of the person’ s v oice coming through the handset: 1. Mov e the slide control, located on the r ight side of the CapT el , toward the top of the phone until the v olume is at a comf or table lev el (see also Conversation T one below).
Ringer Pitch & V olume Y ou can select the Ringer pitc h and volume that help y ou hear best. Set the Ringer v olume to of f, low , medium, or high using the s witch on the right side of the CapT el . T o adjust the Ring er pitch: 1. W ith the handset hung up, press the button.

Re vie wing Captions Y ou can review the captions from a captioned call during the call or after hanging up. 1. Dur ing or after a captioned call, press the button. The captions are displa yed in a smaller area and Revie w Captions appear s. 2. Press and hold the button ne xt to the up or down ar rows to scr oll through the captions.

Using Caller ID If y ou subscr ibe to Caller ID ser vice from y our phone ser vice provider , y our CapT el phone will display the name and/or number of the person calling, depending on the ser vice to which y ou subscr ibe. Incoming Calls CapT el will displa y the name and/or number of the per son calling.
MENU SETTINGS T o access the Menu settings: 1. W ith the handset hung up, press the button. The displa y will show captions from y our last conver sation or the Save Captions After Hanging up menu. 2. Continue pressing the button to scroll through the menu options.
MENU SETTINGS ■ 19 Is a Number Requir ed to Dial an Outside Line? In an of fice setting, use this featur e if you need to dial 9, f or e xample, to get an “outside line”. The number must be sav ed here to g et an outside line dur ing captioned calls.
3. Enter number to b lock call-waiting is displa yed. T ype the number to bloc k call-waiting using the number keypad. Y ou can erase number s shown by pressing the button ne xt to the back arrow ( ← ). 4. Press the button ne xt to OK. **Saved** is displa yed.

22 ■ MENU SETTINGS Captions (On/Off Setting) Y ou can chang e the default setting of CapT el to alwa ys have captions set to “On” or to alwa ys have captions set to “Of f ”, without needing to press the button bef ore each call.

There ar e two w a ys to do this: Dialing the Rela y V oice Number CapT el calls placed through y our state’ s toll-fr ee rela y number are handled like an y other captioned call.
AD V ANCED C ALLING ■ 27 T o place y our VCO call: 1. Lift the CapT el handset and dial 711. 2. The displa y reads VCO Mode Dialing 711 and connects y ou to the 711 rela y ser vice. 3. When y ou see that the rela y CA has ans wer ed, ask for “VCO please”.
DIALING 911 IN AN EMERGENCY In order to pr ovide the f astest possible access to help in an emerg ency , all single line CapT el calls to 911 are immediatel y directed to Emerg ency 911 Ser vices instead of being routed through the Captioning Ser vice.
Dialing an Emer gency 911 Call Dir ectly (Recommended Method) 1. Pick up the CapT el handset. Dial 911 on the ke ypad. 2. The light above the button will go off, and the displa y shows *CAPTIONS ARE OFF* Dialing 911 Directly . W atch the displa y for instr uctions.
Dialing an Emer gency 911 Call Thr ough Rela y (Alter na tiv e Method) Rela y ser vices are equipped to help provide te xt captions during 911 calls, and are v er y familiar with VCO (combined voice and te xt) calling. If you place an emerg ency call through rela y , you will r eceive te xt captions of ev er ything that the 911 call-taker says.
HELPFUL TIPS ■ 31 HELPFUL TIPS Pr ob lem Solving My CapT el does not ring. Check that the s witch is set to ON . T oo man y phones and/or computer modems in your home ma y e xceed the “r ing er equivalence number” (REN) of y our telephone ser vice.
• If y ou ha v e Call-W aiting: (from y our telephone ser vice) make sure that a Call-W aiting block is pr ogr ammed cor rectl y (see Do Y ou Ha v e Call- W aiting? on pa g e 19).
I sometimes see a wor d in brackets, such as “<thank>.” What do the brackets mean? At times, the captioning ser vice may make a correction in the written captions. The corrected w ord(s) ar e display ed in brackets. There ma y be a dela y between the wr ong wor d(s) and the cor rection.
The handset volume is not loud enough for me. Slide the control up to increase the v olume coming through the handset. Press the button to tur n on the v olume boost. Check the slide to make sure it is set to the lev el that is best for y ou (see Adjusting the Sound on page 11).
Nothing is happening with my CapT el phone. No power , no lights, no dial tone. The pow er suppl y may hav e been disr upted. Reset your CapT el telephone by unplugging the power adapter from the w all. W ait f or one minute, then plug the A C adapter back in.
CapT el user s do not need to say “GA ” or “SK” (“Go Ahead” or “Stop K eying”). This is optional. T o make more than one call in a ro w , hang up and dial the ne xt telephone number just as you w ould with any other non-r elay call.
